So I thought of my plot and what my story is going to be about, and I am having an extremely hard time figuring out the name for one specific thing and it's driving me nuts! I know this is pretty minor, but usually I like to think of the name of something before I start writing-- instead of leaving a blank for later. So heres my plot, if anyone could help, I'd be really grateful! ;D

A girl discovers magical powers outside of her realm. After questiong the "higher authorities or ancient throne" many times, she is unwillingly sentanced to silence and forbidden to discuss the matter. Unable obay orders, she is forced to run for her life-- along the way, befriending a young, talented boy who is next to asume the "throne".

What I wanted help with was the name for the "throne". I dont want the government of my story to be called "The Higher Authorities", or "Throne". I orignally started off with panel, moved onto higher authorities, and ended up with the good ol' cliche THRONE. I've already checked one genorator site and it didn't have that specific type of genorator, so I'm hoping that maybe someone here will be able to help me out. Thanks a lot! =D

Whar kind of government are you thinking of? A monarchy, an assembly system, some combination of the two, something else?

Right sorry, I didn't explain that fully. =)

It's a combination of the two where there is one main ruler, and then there is a sort of panel alongside the ruler that makes the decisions with him. The ruler can't control everyone, he just has the most power (if that makes sense). So for example lets just say there's a king and then there is his panel which is made up of other people of high status; together they make decisions on what goes on, however the king has the most weight to pull in decision making. It's pretty complicated, I mean It might take me a somewhat larger paragraph to describe it fully. They are just one large panel which makes the decisions about the realm and what goes on inside of it. The specific guy she brefriends is the next to asume one of those positions of authority.

Cabinet?

Ministers?

Depending on how large this body is, they might be large enough to form a parliament of sorts, in which case you can go wild with naming them. You can go and look up the government system of many countries, and you can see what they call their legislative body.

I'm really up to anything, I just didn't want to have to call them the throne. That's a great tip though and I'll be sure to do that.

Thinking on it more...

I think it is actually a fantastic idea to call the legislative body/consultative body the Throne.

Because normally the Throne is just what the king/queen/monarch of choice literally sits on. But the group of people that the king/queen/monarch of choice metaphorically sits on (i.e. relies on), could also be called the Throne.

I did something like that once, only the entire governing body was a whole lot bigger. It including the king (who was not always male), the queen/consort, advisers, ambassadors, the rest of the royal family, a handful of well trusted upper nobles, and my MC's, the Keepers, who were outside of government but still had a hand in ruling the country. I also had a terrible time thinking of a name for the entire ruling body, and I ended up with the Crown. You're welcome to use that if you want to. Otherwise, Throne is a wonderful name, because it encompasses so many people, or you could try The Council or the Table.

I am literally baffling in incomprehension as to why you think this is a "cliche"... Honestly, I swear people get so insane about trying to avoid anything perceived as a "cliche" that they start thinking ordinary words used for their usual real-life concepts are suddenly "cliche" too.

Word of advice: Stop obsessing over cliches. Focus on writing a good story instead. :P

Its not so much that I find it a cliche, its more that my style is very different and I dont like to use just ordinary ideas. Perhaps I should have worded it differently, but just letting you know that, this is more along the lines of what I meant.

Bitter Irony, I do like that a lot. I have found a couple since I first posted, but "curia" has a nice ring to it so I will definately keep it in mind. Thank you.

How about "bench"? Judges sit "on the bench." Even though it's not really a bench (usually it's a chair).

It's fairly common to have such positions referred to as simply "chairs" or "seats". He could assume the council seat or some such. Names for the group could be boring/generic/common ones like council, assembly, court, etc.

Good luck, in any case.

Hmm, here are a few words that might help.
"The throne" is of course a metonymy for "the kingship," so you could use other royal accessories to communicate the same idea:
The crown, the scepter, the mantle, et cetera
The fasces could work too, being a bundle of sticks bound around an axe, and symbolizing the magistrate's power to beat (i.e. discipline) or behead his subject.
Since this is a group:
Oligarchy (lit. "a few rulers")
Parliament or Senate (those may be too ordinary for your needs)
Dikasty could work. Dikaste is Attic Greek for "a citizen qualified to sit as a judge," and they sat as a group (basically judges/jurors). Some citizens even made a living sitting as dikastes, though such was generally frowned upon.
