When Your Own Book Disturbs You

Today I decided I'd write during my lunch break (it's a great way to get about 1,000 words out). My book is historical fiction, set in Mystic, Connecticut in the late nineteenth century. One of the characters is a whaler. I just wrote the first scene of whale carnage and am feeling a little queasy. Zombies and gore are no problem, but the idea of whaling...so wrong...but it was a part of my character's life.

So then I became curious...how many of you end up writing scenes that, while necessary, disgust you to your very core?

Anyone Stuck???

Is anyone stuck on their story right now? I was for the last couple of days. Very frustrating. Anyway, I walked away from my computer and went to the library to read a couple books for inspiration. Watched a movie and played alot of Bejeweled Blitz on FB. So, today I planned on writing and getting over that hump of nothingness.... yes I could have just wrote anything - gibberish but my problem was that I lost my villain. My outlined villain actually turned out to become a hero. Sooooo I had to rethink my plot and it was driving me crazy... until about an hour ago:) I HAVE A VILLAIN and I'm so happy in the direction now. Fingers crossed that it was continue to work and I won't make this person a hero (I must have that "I can change a villain" syndrome).

I hope everyone is writing happily tonight and if you are stuck... don't give up.

Mark Twain details!

The Mark Twain write-in has been approved! It's going to be on Sunday, November 15 at 1 pm in the cafe area of the visitors' center.

I don't yet know if we'll be charged for admittance to the visitors' center. I'm going to guess not, but just to be on the safe side, please bring $6 for admission just in case, and if not, then bonus! :)

If I can get at least 10 people to commit to being there (not including me) then I can get a discount on house tours, which are normally $14. Also nextdoor is Harriet Beecher Stowe's house, another very important author of the time.

So I don't know about all of you, but I won't be conscious by 9 a.m. on Saturday, much less working on my novel. Later in the day, however, I intend to pound out some words at Sweet Bears Dessert Cafe, 328 Shore Drive, Branford (www.sweetbearsdessertcafe.com). Unfortunately I have no idea what their hours are, but I'll find out tomorrow and post as soon as I know. I haven't been to their new location (they just moved) but they have free wifi and tasty treats.
I'm going to aim for 7 p.m. but I'll make it earlier if their hours don't accommodate this.

You’re almost halfway done! Woo! What better way to keep motivated than to attend a write in? I also have free bagel coupons to anyone who shows up (graciously given to me by the manager of the Wallingford Bruegger’s). Free wifi is available as well, and I will be sporting the hip table top sign for easy identification, be typing away furiously and have the power strip with me.
Again, please RSVP so I know how many people to expect. I don’t want to save seating for 10 and have only a couple of you show up. I think the other patrons might get angry about that.

Panera Bread – Hamden (2100 Dixwell Ave.)

Panera Bread is located in the same plaza on Dixwell as Marshalls is. It is directly behind the Chilis restaurant and next to PetCo. Sadly, they don’t always light up their sign which is why I’m mentioning all of this.

I've got a bright orange tabletop sign for easy identification. Chances are that I'll have a green tea in my hand as well, but that isn't always the *easiest* way to ID someone.

Panera Bread also has free wireless internet for those numerous Google searches that you'll need to do when it comes to researching something for your book. (Or for updating your Facebook or Twitter status to let your minions know where you are.) I will bring a power strip so that everyone's laptop is sure to get enough juice.

Come for the food or come for the hot chocolate. Come for stimulating conversation, or the word war prizes. I don’t care as long as you’re there and plugging away at your novel.

Please Help Out If You Can

I have reached that point of desparation and I am not starting to beg.

My husband and I were both laid off of our jobs a couple of months ago. We were already living pay check to pay check and now we have nothing. The state has been holding my unemployment benefits and I cannot find out why. We are beyond broke.

Needless to say, I am in desparate need of a job. I have tried the job boards and agencies, and now I am asking you, my fellow NaNoers if you know of anything.

So, if you work for a company that is hiring, or if you know of anything that is available, please let me know.

I can do almost anything and I have experience in retail, commercial banking, and as an administrative assistant.

DId anyone here start out with the perfect outline and then trash it at the last minute?

Did you make a plan for a mystery story that somehow turned into a sci-fi thriller?

Have you done anything crazy in the past while writing you NaNoWriMo?
Like stay up all night and then find out in the morning tomorrow was only the 29th?

If it fits into the description of the title tell it!

I started out my story as a sort of autobiography of a teenage boy's school and at home life, now it seems it will either end up as zombie invasion, terroist invasion, (I still can't speel terrorist without spellcheck) or a sort of sudden hurricane appearing over a small New England town.

off topic--need use of a video camera so I can be on History channel

I got an invite yesterday to audition to host a new History channel series on 2012! Traveling the world! But I need to upload an audition video and I haven't got a video camera. Can anyone help me become famous? I have about 2 weeks to get it done.

Our second write in of the year will take place on Wednesday - November 4th, 09 at 6pm.

We'll be meeting at the Panera Bread in Milford. I will try to get there a bit early to secure us a big table near some outlets. I will have the bright orange tabletop NaNo sign on the table for easy identification.
