<O> ONLINE events - Tri-City Calendar (Fredericton - Peoria - Gainesville)

For the online events, we are working with 3 adjacent timezones. In writing the times of the events below, the timezones are Peoria, IL (CST) / Gainesville, FL (EST) / Fredericton, NB (AST). So an event that is listed as 5pm/6pm/7pm – 7pm/8pm/9pm would run from 5-7 pm for folks in Peoria, from 6-8 pm for folks in Gainesville, and from 7-9 pm for folks in Fredericton.

If at any point you are confused about the time of one of these events, please don’t hesitate to contact your ML.

All of these events will take place in our chatroom, which is here: http://www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm. You can also get there from the Chat & Jar page on the Tri-City website. If you have a Meebo account, the room is called NaNoWriMo War Games

*Please note, the guest author event will take place in a different room – link below with the event.

Hi all,

I was just wondering if we were going to try to get together to celebrate finishing NaNo. I know not everyone made their goal, but to write at all was fantastic.

Please post ideas if anyone would like to get together to talk about how we all felt about this years NaNo.

Thanks,

TGIO After Party

Hello all!

A big congrats to everyone for a wonderful November! No matter what your word count was at the end of the madness, we are all writers and we had a darn good time!

But...most importantly, is the invitation to the TGIO party! It will be Friday December 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the Firehouse Bar and Grill on Galena road (Route 24). NOT to be confused with Firehouse Pizza, which is a completely different franchise which is not affiliated.

We will be ordering some pizza at around 7:00ish and prizes and entertainment will follow shortly thereafter! A side note...for anyone under the age of 21, you will unfortunately only be able to stay until the kitchen closes at 10:00 pm. :( Since I work there part time, I certainly don't want to get in any trouble!! Anyone over 21, your lovely bartender Emily makes quite excellent drinks and I guarantee we will have a blast!

Below you will find the address, phone number and other pertinent information so we avoid any potential mix ups :)

Phone: 309-679-9116
4925 N. Galena Rd.
Peoria Heights, IL 61616

If you are coming from the east side of the river, take 116 to the 150 exit towards Peoria, then take the Adam's street (Route 24) exit (it's right after the bridge) towards Chilicothe and it is on the left hand side about a mile and a half down. From anywhere else...I'm pretty much directionless so I will leave you to plug in the above address into Google Maps for your own personal route!

Please RSVP as soon as you can (an apology for getting this out so late) so I can have an idea of how many pizza's to order.

I hope to see you all there!

Your Co-ML,
Nicole (Juniper34)

PS...I sent this out as a regional email as well, but thought I would post it here as well to make sure that as many people saw it as possible!
The Final Day!!!

Hello all!

I'm sorry I have not been as active on the boards the last week or so as I usually am. I am in a new spot at work and EVERYONE can see my screen, so I haven't been able to get on very much at work :( which is where I did a lot of my checking/updating etc.

Anyway...I wanted to give a little last minute encouragement to everyone in need. YOU CAN DO IT! Last year I had a lot more written and finished early, but this year I struggled a bit more with hectic schedules and waaaaay too much to do. But...there is still time to knock it out!

A big congrats to everyone who has already hit the magical purple winner bar!!!

Keep on trucking guys! We are almost there!
So, how do you feel?

Congrats to all of you who are writing so far. I'm proud of you! Isn't it nice to see those word counts go up? Isn't it strange to find your characters veering off into, well to put it lightly, unexpected directions? Isn't it cool to know you're actually doing it, working toward this amazing and fun goal?

I wanted to ask, most importantly, how does your novel make you feel so far? Is it what you've planned or hoped for? Does it rise above your expectations and give you a warm fuzzy feeling every time you sit down to add more to its novelly glory? Is it maybe going in another direction from what you hoped, or turning out to be some horrible, terrible monstrosity that haunts you in your nightmares but you find you have some eerie unnatural drive to keep writing anyway? (I myself am starting to view mine as the latter, but chocolate, hot tea, and a grumbled reminder that this is only the rough draft keep me going.)

Share how it's going for you this year so far! We're almost about to wrap up the first week already. How time flies when you're having fun! (And how it flies even faster when you have a deadline to make!)

A Big Hello! And Some Encouragement

Hi all, this is Sporkmeister here crawling out of my hermit cave for the first time this month! xD I realized I hadn't popped into the Peoria forums at all yet! Anyway, a big happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Hope you're all enjoying your day.

So I also decided to offer a bit of encouragement to those of you who are lagging a bit behind on word count. With only five days to go, I'm betting some of us are getting a little frantic that we won't finsh after all this. Am I right?

About ten of my friends and I all started out November with high hopes. As the month wore on, however, most of us fell extremely behind. One of my friends was the only one in really good shape for reaching 50k, and he just validated and won yesterday! The rest of my friends gave up one by one, and about halfway through the month it was down to two out of the ten of us still going.

Now that my only buddy finished, here I am, the last one of my friends still battling it out against the clock, and I'm a good 9000 words behind on my word count! But I haven't given up hope on winning this year. All of you who doubt your ability - don't give in to those negative thoughts! YOU CAN DO IT!!! BELIEVE!!!!

~Meghan
EP Panera~11/25~Update

I will attend the write-in tonight, but I know I'll be late (7:15ish). And, I'll likely be the only one there, because a lot of you already said you'd be taking the night off to be with family. So, if it looks like it's just me, Nanners the Purple Monkey and my muses, I will also take off around 8:15ish, so I can prepare our Thanksgiving feast too.

That being said, I am adding a Black Friday all-day online write-in to the calendar for those of you not battling the mall crowds. (Like me, who spent way too many years working retail on Black Friday!!)

And, Saturday is still on at Kade's. 10A-2P.
Anyone else using Google Docs?

This is my first time using it. At first it was great but as my document gets longer and longer it seems to be freezing up more and more.

Today was the ultimate heart attack experience. I had written just over 1,000 words and went to change over a load of laundry. I came back and it had wiped out my entire 32,000 words and saved it! My document was a complete blank. I started to freak and then calmed down and thought about it. Was somehow able to retrieve it from the revision history. I don't have Windows on my PC at home but do have a copy saved in Word at work but would've lost my 1,000 words from today. After today's fiasco I will be saving dual copies daily in Google also.

Has anyone else had this experience with Google Docs? Or, does anyone have another solution that I may be overlooking?

Meltdown averted but whew!

Hi all,

I must have looked at the map wrong and went to Somewhere over on Pioneer Rd. That must have been the old location for Kade's? Anyway, when I got home I re-looked it up and I guess it's now on War Memorial?

I'm sorry to have missed writing with you, I was really looking forward to some friendly faces going through the same weird stuff that happens when you try to write a novel in 30 days.

If there is going to be any other write-in's soon or even informal ones, please let me know, I would love to try to join you if I can get away from work and home.

Author Chat tomorrow, Nov. 17th

Join the Gainesville region on Tuesday, Nov. 17th for our Big Event Write-in.

Gainesville WriMos: The in-person event will take place from 5pm - 10pm in Library West, Info Commons. Refreshments will be available, as well 3-mini word-wars, one after each of our guest authors, for a chance to win a book by these authors.

For everyone in Peoria, Gainesville and New Brunswick regions: We have three awesome guest authors joining us via live-chat to provide inspiration and to answer questions about their works and the craft of writing. These author chats are being hosted in a Meebo room that is different from where the word-wars take place, so please make note of this link:

Large Chat Window: www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat.htm
Small Chat Window: www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat-small.htm
Back-up Chat Window (in case the host site is down): www.uflib.ufl.edu/LibraryWest/NaNoWriMo.html

The Authors:

J.V. Jones (5:30-6pm Peoria / 6:30-7pm Gainesville / 7:30-8pm Fredericton)
J.V. Jones is author of the bestselling Book Of Words series. Her books have been translated into nine languages. Her latest book, Watcher of the Dead, will be published by Tor in April 2010. She lives in San Diego. http://jvj.com

J.C. Hutchins (6:30-7pm Peoria / 7:30-8pm Gainesville / 8:30-9 pm Fredericton)
An innovator in online publishing and promotion, J.C. Hutchins has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR's Weekend Edition and Time.com. He used podcasting and fan evangelism to land two fiction book deals from St. Martin's Press. His 7th Son thriller trilogy is the most popular "podcast novel" series in history. jchutchins.net

Mur Lafferty (7:30-8pm Peoria / 8:30-9pm Gainesville / 9:30-10pm Fredericton)
Mur Lafferty is an award winning American podcaster and writer based in Durham, NC. She was, until July 2007, the host and co-editor of Pseudopod. She is also the host and creator of the podcasts Geek Fu Action Grip and I Should Be Writing, and author of Playing for Keeps. She is participating in NaNo WriMo 2009 to work on the sequel. murverse.com

The Rules:
Please edit your username for the room to include the first letter of the region you are closest to: P-, G- or F- (E.G. P-Hewey; G-Dewey; F-Louie)

Authors will be introduced at the beginning of their chat, and I'll ask the first question to get the ball rolling. After that feel free to ask questions of the author, but be respectful of them and other participants. Sometimes an answer may be broken up over more than one entry from the authors. I've asked them to use ellipsis (...) to indicate they are still in the middle of answering the question. If you see this, please wait until they have finished answering before asking the next question.

Authors are scheduled for half hour chats each, and transcripts will be made available if you are not able to attend one or more of these chats. If you aren't going to be able to make it, and you have a question for a specific author, you can post those here until 4:00 pm EDT tomorrow. After that, I might not get them.

Tri-City Frenemy program

Howdy,

I am Christy, one of the co-MLs from the Gainesville, FL region, and this thread is to introduce the "Tri-City Frenemy" program. This year Fredericton (New Brunswick), Gainesville (Florida) and Peoria (Illinois) have teamed up to create a little cross-regional competition. In addition to the online write-ins that each region is hosting, we want to encourage wrimos in the regions to reach out to writers in your "Sister-Cities" to find a writing buddy(friend)/enemy.

By picking a Frenemy from the Tri-City group, you'll have someone you can look to for support, or a little one-on-one competition during the online word wars, or at other times during the month. If you are looking for a writing buddy, I encourage you to reply to this post, let us know if you are looking for someone who will cheer you on, or someone who will taunt you whenever their word count sneaks past yours.

Feel free to take on more than one Frenemy, but remember, a writing buddy is a commitment, you have to feed them, walk them, and… well, not quite, but if you do pick a writing buddy, you both want to know that you'll have someone who will help see you to the 50k finish line.

So go ahead, and post your info, or look at the posts others have made, and find someone who you think would be a good match to your writing style, and adopt a Frenemy today. This thread appears in all three regions, so there is no need for you to leave the comfort of your own regional forum to find a Frenemy.

And for those frenemy buddies that want a chance to meet before November, - or if you'd rather pick a writing buddy "live", join us at the Tri-City Online Meet & Greet, to be held on Thursday, October 29th at the following time:

Peoria 6:30-8:30 pm
Gainesville 7:30-9:30 pm
Fredericton 8:30-10:30 pm

(This is the same time, reflected in the respective time zones)

The chat room for the online Meet & Greet, as well as the word wars (or any clandestine meetings for Tri-City region writers) is http://www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm

Online Tonight

Hi! I know there's a write-in going on tonight. I haven't been able to attend because it's always when I have my math class scheduled, but I am a little under the weather so won't be attending class tonight. I don't really feel well enough to show for the write-in, but will anyone be in the chatroom during that time? I'll be there. :)
A fortuitous meeting...

As some of you know, yesterday at the Write-In at Kade's we found out that the lady sitting next to our group was a book editor. We managed to pick her brain a bit and it was a lot of fun. She seemed very interested in what we were doing and even offered us her contact information. I wanted to share that info with all of you, too!

Her name is Heather Delabre and her email address, if you are interested in hiring her services down the road, is hdelabre@gmail.com

She did ask that you please put in the subject header of any emails you send to her the words NaNoWriMo or Peoria Writing Group, or something like that so she can keep everything organized on her end.

Good luck everyone!

Tri-City: Word War Rules

At our online chats we will be holding multi-region word wars. At most of the regular chats, (Sundays, Thursdays and Saturdays) the word war will take place during the middle hour. Chat Room Here: www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm

At the other online events, word wars may take place as decided by the host region for the event. One of the MLs for the host region will be moderator / time-keeper for the word war. She will call “go” and “time,” at the prescribed time.

Participants in the war will write during that hour, and stop when time is called. In order to determine which words were written during the word war, we ask that you do one of the following:

 1. open a new document for the word war, and use the word count feature there
2. write down the number of words you have before we start the war. Subtract that from your total word count at the end of the war to determine how many words you wrote
3. or write you words for the word war in a different color text, so you can easily highlight it and do a word count on your selection.

At the end of the word war, once you have your word count, you will need to report the number of words you wrote. Before the word war, an ML from each region (if available) will identify herself as the one to take your word count.

Report the number of words you wrote to your ML. She will tally all word counts, and come up with the average word count for the region (total number of words divided by participants in the region). Your ML will report the word count average to the hosting ML, and she will announce the winner of the word war.

If no ML is present from your region for the word war, the hosting ML can either ask for a volunteer from your region to gather and average the word counts, or take and do the math for multiple regions.

This is a honor system. Please report your words truthfully.

We recommend keeping an eye on the time yourself, and/or leaving your chat window open, at least a little, next to your document, so you know when the war ends.

In order to be fair to people in your region for average word count, you can’t participate if you join the word war and/or are not in the chatroom more than 15 minutes after the word war starts.
