I sent an email out, but Im posting again because we still need a place :(

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A large room that we could rent for the day for free or very cheaply as a non-profit organization, that doesn't need an original reciept (they come from headquarters in California, and dont have time to send them to individual regions). I do have, however, a copy of the letter naming us a non-profit. This place needs to be a central location, say somewhere around the bridge. And someplace where we can all bring food, and has tables and chairs and room for activities Joanna and I are planning on torturing you with having for your enjoyment.

Please, if anyone knows of such a place, let us know!

I assume we also want power for laptops? I was thinking Newport News park but with the cold weather coming soon maybe not such a hot idea.

Maybe a school might be willing to let us use some space on a weekend? I don't have any contacts but just an idea.

How long are we looking to book a place for per meetup (if more than one).

Well we're hoping to have several write-ins a week, and usually those will be held in laptop friendly places. In the past, they have lasted about 2 hours. But for the Kickoff I don't think we'll be too picky about outlets - its going to be in the end of October, so there won't be too much noveling going on there - although those who want to bring any rough drafts, story ideas, or any other things on laptops are more than welcome!

I never thought of the school idea. I don't have any contacts there either, and Im not sure if they would allow us there.

Hmmm...

It would be super fun to rent a hotel suite!

Hotel Suite would be nice but I'm concerned about fire code limits on number of people in a suite. If we could do it I think a hotel suite would be totally awesome for an all nighter or something :D

How many people usually show up for the meetings?

What date are we looking at for the kickoff party?

Our meet-ups usually have a small grouping - usually 5-6 people. We're planning this year on trying to have 2 a week this year, one on each side of the river, to try to get higher turnouts. But last-year's kickoff had around 25 people at it. So I agree, the hotel suite wouldn't work.

The date we're looking at is, I think, the last weekend in October. I need to kidnap Joanna in the relatively near future to have a major planning party.

Whooooo back on the NaNo site!!

Joanna here. ^_^

ANYway, Prince Books is great, but they close at 7pm! They have some room in their coffee shop area, but are relatively small... I could talk to the manager or someone and see what they think, tho.

Schools are a good idea... but I don't know how to borrow space. I'll do some poking.

I'm thinking somewhere central, near one end or the other of the HRBT. There's a fun little Irish pub called Sarah's that wouldn't mind us in Phoebus, and there was a coffee shop across the street from there last year... I can double-check that as well.

The catch is that we tend to be loud... so we need a place that won't mind. We disrupted Applebee's last year, heh heh...

yes, the applebee's that i COULD NEVER FIND.

not that i really care this year tho, since i'm totally booked the 30th and the 31st. But if it's any other day, i'm down, so long as its EASILY LOCATABLE.

that's all i ask.

Oh, I doubt it could be those nights. I'm thinking earlier in the week, maybe even the Sunday evening of the prior weekend. I've got work those nights due to the, aherm, holiday and all. ~_^

The pub sounds like a good plan to me :) As does Sunday night :D I have a thing in Richmond that Saturday (anyone want to go to the Zombie Walk 10/25? :D) so I'm all for Sunday.

I would offer you a ride but my car's already full.

You could check out www.zombiewalk.com and see if there's anyone coming from your area :) Let me know if you end up going.

As far as dates go, we don't have anything settled, but we're looking at Sunday the 26th at the moment. It'll depend on when things are open, though.

...Also, I know it's Hallowe'en, but is anyone interested in having a midnight kick-off write-in somewhere?

A midnight kickoff on Halloween would be so fun! But that said, I don't know if I'd be able to attend. I think my parents are going to come in town that weekend to help us get the new place set up and decorated and whatnot.

So don't include me in the headcount, but I'll def. LYK If anything changes!

Just curious but will that be because of the Carbon Leaf concert?

When you say around the bridge, do you mean the MMM or the HRBT? Would the Barnes and Noble in Newport News on Jefferson be too far away? I'm thinking that maybe they have space. I am in Portsmouth, so I am guessing that most locations are going to be a good distance for me.

I'd have to second that... I'm in and out of the B&N a lot and it's been close to full just about every time I've been down there.

I can't think of anyplace off the top of my head that would work well in NN, the larger restaurants are way too noisy and the smaller ones don't have enough room for a larger party/group. :P

Well, Joanna and I had a plotting meeting a few days ago, and I believe we found a place

(note: the date and time are off the top of my head, as I left my notebook in my car and Im far too lazy to go out now and get it. I'll fix any false information, if Joanna doesnt beat me to it)

Where: Kelly's Tavern, Pembroke Mall
When: Oct. 26. 6:00 pm
Planned: I can't tell you. It's a secret. All I can say is that it'll be fun

I believe this is also the place where we will host the midnight write-in

Now keep in mind, these events are the only ones that will be held in one area - we're working on holding 3 or 4 write-ins a week in different areas.

The event is all ages, of course. We're expecting a big group for the kickoff, so please note that the checks of large parties include a gratuity of 20%. That is, of course, if you choose to get food. :D

Any questions?
