I first posted this thread idea in 2005 but my other two stories didn't really answer any questions.
Here's my example...
In 2005 I wrote The Askinar Towers. Basically it's a modern version of "The Wizard of Oz" written on a scale of "Lord of The Rings". So the question my novel answers is... What If JRR Tolkein wrote The Wizard of Oz?
For this year my novel answers this following question...
What Would Happen if a group of Puritan girls got their imaginations shoved into overdrive?
So how about you? What question does your novel answer?

Mine is rather boring for anyone other than myself, because I am writing this story to answer a few questions I have had regarding my large novel project. That one is almost finished but the conclusion has stumped me. I keep scrapping everything, because nothing feels right.
Anyway, my Nanovel this year will answer these troubling questions:
1. What is Main Character 2's personality underneath the emotionless facade his wears and undying loyalty to MC 1?
2. What is MC 2's driving motivation?
3. What is the relationship between MC 2 and Secondary Character J?
4. What is SC J's personality, motivation, and connections to MC 3?
Yeah. These are important questions that need to be answered to successfully complete my on-going novel, but to answer these questions, I decided to write a "prequel" that follows MC 2. =D So... nothing super deep or whimsical going on here. It is probably not interesting to anyone other than myself, but the story should be pretty good.

Mine don't tend to answer questions so much, but the ones it explores are:
1. What is the balance between religious duty and public welfare?
----------2. To what extent does a skilled person owe that skill to the community?
3. Does spiritual power corrupt?

Mine is to do with writing itself:
I ask: Can you have two masters and be loyal to both?
In other words, can you be true to your own creativity and vision (no matter how rebellious) and still live with the oppression of fame and the expectations of the public/critics?
It's an old question, but it's something I always wonder about...

Great question....
Um, I guess mine answers a couple of questions:
1.) What's more real: other people's view of you, or your view of yourself?
----------2.) Can poor choices that lead to distrust ever be fixed in the eyes of those you love?
3.) Do dragon's really roast small children before eating them?

My main question is: Does "Fate" and/or "Destiny" irrevocably set the life-path of a person, or do they choices/freewill? How much freewill do they have?
A minor question that will be answered is: What happens when a girl wears clothes fastened completely with Velcro? :P

For a novel I'm working on (unrelated to NaNoWriMo), the question is this: How does one let go of a loved one?
As for what I plan to work on in November, the story will answer this: In a world where everything seems better than reality, how does one find the will to seek the truth?
Looking on it now, they both seem to revolve around the same topic. Guess that's what I like writing about, huh?

@squidmaster: I had a novel like that once, except the answer, in my case, was "not very much at all" and the story ended rather prematurely.
I am very curious about all the novels above - they sound interesting!
Anyway, my current project would be: Is it possible to let go and move on?

Not sure if this is going to be my novel for this year, but if it is, my question would be...
"What would happen if a group of brain-eating zombies besieged an ordinary, dull office building?"
Which I guess also begs the question... "What are some regular office supplies that one can use to kill a zombie?" :)

If I stick with my current idea (which depends on how far I can stretch the plot once I start outlining), the question my novel answers could be either one of the following... or both.
"What happens when a Cockney bar maid and a celebrated courtesan fight over the same impoverished nobleman in a dreamlike, alt-version of 18th Century London?"
... or alternatively...
"What happens when good nursery rhymes go horribly awry?"
You'll have to take my word for it that the two questions are very closely related.

The idea I'm toying with this year (and the one that I'll probably end up doing for NaNo) is:
What if two reformed murderers were attacked by a murderous man whose life they had destroyed in the past? And then, what happens if you throw a confused teenager into the mix?

Exactly how will anyone tell the difference between the living and the undead? If it's a dull office building, they probably seem like zombies themselves. It'll be a veritable Free-For-All!!!
