Hey everybody! Welcome back to all you veterans, and a welcome to all those who are doing this for the first time.I'm the new ML this year. My name is Candice, or you can call me by my username or SGG. Whichever.
I'm way excited for this year! Here's hoping for success for all!

Screw plot. I'll just write 50000 words of SMUT!

Hi Candace. Long time, no see.
I don't know if I am going to NaNo this year, I'm still debating it. If I do, I'll be here cheering everyone else on.
We should begin to set up write-ins. I am free early afternoon MW, all afternoon and evening TuTh, and all day Friday as well. Do you know your work schedule yet? I think the GfC write-ins worked best, but I'm listening if you have other/better locations in mind.

The G4C write in worked well, but they seemed a little more social than actual write-ins. I was thinking maybe get-to-know-yous there, and maybe meet somewhere like the library or something for actual write-ins, a totally separate event, just because I think it's quieter and less distracting. I know in some cases they allow food in certain areas, but I would have to talk to the manager people.
Anyone else have any ideas?
EDIT: Unfortunately, I'll be gone until the 12th of October, but hopefully you can brainstorm amongst yourselves until then :)

Honestly, for a write-in I prefer coffeeshops or something like that. I don't go to libraries very often and too quiet bothers me. If I wanted quiet I'd stay at home, and then i'd either watch tv at the same time (shows I've seen a million times and thus don't need to watch closely) listen to music or podcasts. For me it more is my own mindset. Am I going to be social or am I going to write, what is the purpose for me going to the gathering...
Since I'm doing two this year, I will have to write every chance I get, cause it is either that or do homework.

Hey guys. :] I'm Bree. This'll be my fourth NaNo, but I just moved up from Salt Lake, so I'm an Ogden virgin. (DISLOYALTY!) I'm really looking forward to shaking things up, though.
In my experience, library write-ins worked great, but only if we managed to secure a separate room for our use. Anything less always wound up getting us kicked out, since they're sort of inevitably noisy. Would we be able to do anything like that here?

Probably. I know a few people. The North Branch loves me, anyway, but they can probably direct me to some people in the Main Branch, which is where we'd probably end up. A separate room is definitely what I was thinking, hopefully we can get lots of people to show :)

Natch. And I can probably bring a power strip or two. And if anyone else has any that'd be super special awesome :) Or any other ideas on neat places to meet. Anywhere you're simply DYING to go? I was thinking of calling the Union Station, or get the UTA to sponsor us for a day and we can play on the Frontrunner and write. Throw out an idea and I'll see what I can do :)

I thought it would be fun. Apparently Toronto did it once and had lots of fun.

And free with our cool Weber State Ed-Passes. If we took the train down to SLC and then stayed on for the return trip, it'd be two hours of writing.
There is also a pretty cool coffeeshop just a couple of blocks from the SLC train station called "Addicted" that offers vegan food and free wireless.
The only warning I'd give is that electric outlets on the FrontRunner are at a premium. I imagine we could bring a multiple outlet strip, I don't know if it's frowned upon or not but it's easier to ask foregiveness than obtain permission. Or so I'm told.

Vegan? I like my meat. <3 If possible, I would totally accept my paychecks in meat. It would be awesome. Still, the place sounds nice. Free wireless=win. I've actually e-mailed UTA about it, so here's hoping. *crosses fingers* And I've also e-mailed the Weber County Library. I'm hoping we can get sponsored by someone.
Jim, do you know what the policies are for posting flyers up at Weber? I wanna plaster the boards XD

Each building is controlled by the Dean's office for that building. I'm not sure who determines the postings in the Student Services Center or Student Union Bldg, but you could probably check in one of the offices and find out.
Generally, the Dean's office stamps your flyer and then you can put it up; they take down flyers without the official stamp. Some buildings are more strict than others.
I would also suggest contacting Weber: A Journal of the Contemporary West (a literary journal, used to be Weber Studies) and see if they will help you get the word out, too. I would imagine that creative writing classes might find this a useful exercise.

ooo As an officer of a club I know about posting flyers.
Most buildings have boards that are specific to who can post and at least a couple that are free for all. The main difference is the social science building, many of the walls are also open for posting.
Don't post in bathrooms, however. I know some do, but the janitors have said the just take them down.
The music building is the most strict when it comes to where to post. They only have two places that are open, the others have to be okay'd through the various departments.
The most open places for posting are the social science building, and the art building. Communication is pretty good as well.
This is coming from running a group that is not all that well liked by some of the students on campus. GSA. :-)

Oh, hey, I know Addicted! They have awesome munchies - you wouldn't even know it's vegan most of the time. The WIFI can give you problems now and then, but it's a great little bohemian hangout. Perfect for a flock of novelists.
Speaking of flocks, how large does the Ogden troupe tend to get? The UTA thing sounds like it would be great for a smaller group, but if we're talking forty or more, it might get a little overwhelming.

Well, last year we started out at...what? 10? And steadily lost people, til it ended up only being three or four of us. -_-; But last year we didn't have an ML, so it was more along the lines of someone saying 'hey, I'll be here at this time. come play with me', and others showing up if they could. This year I'm hoping to get the word out and recruit and organize things a little better :)

Whot, really? My goodness. We'll certainly have to work on rectifying that. That makes the whole UTA thing seem a lot more sensible, though - I was picturing a rowdy room of hyperactive teens and disillusioned college kids doing what they do best.

I took FrontRunner to the bus and thence to the airport yesterday. Sadly, as we passed Addicted, I noticed that they're closed and gone. I don't know what happened, perhaps a victim of Bushonomics.
Anyway, if you had your heart set on meeting there, you'll need to re-set your heart.

Well that's a bummer. :/ I haven't been there in a royal age. What a shame. All my favorite places in SLC are closing down. Next I'll hear they shut down Sam Weller's books, lord.
