Hey everyone! I'm so excited to be at Hollins this year where I know there are several people waiting for November as anxiously as I am. =D We need to have meet-ups this year - perhaps at the Rat? - at least once a week I think, because I don't know about all of you, but meet-ups help my word count in an awesome way. But first I think you all should introduce yourselves! Also, facebook me. XD
I'm Emily, I'm a first-year, and I write primarily fantasy with historical undertones. Or possibly overtones. This is my fifth NaNo attempt and hopefully success. =D

I noticed that! There were a couple of comments on this thread, and then I checked it a few days later and there weren't any and I thought at first I'd gone crazy. But anyway. YES, I am a creative writing major - not declared because I don't think I'm able to declare it yet, but that's definitely my plan. =D
P.S.: Both of your novel synopses sound intriguing!!

Declaring a major is largely a matter of filling out a form and turning it in. I declared my Creative Writing major at the end of my first year (largely because I was using it as an unavoidable change of adviser, but I'd have done it about then anyway), but I don't know if there's any rule about not declaring until you've completed a certain amount of time.
As previously mentioned (just in case any new Hollins folk wander by), I'm a Hollins alum currently residing down in Blacksburg. Although last year I wrote a novel that was fairly standard generic fantasy, this year I'm working out the "I can't decide between my ideas" problem by using a framing story to tell several different fantasy stories, which will probably vary from urban fantasy to generic fantasy. I'm still working out the details on this one, but I'm hoping I'll be able to have some fun with this.

Hey, Emily, if you want to meet up in the Rat before the start of NaNo, by the way, I'm all for it. ArgentD probably can't come - she's in Blacksburg right now - but Shara and I can. And possibly another of our friends who had a passing interest in joining.
I'm also kinda curious to see how many of my friends I can get to join NaNo, since so many are English - Creative Writing majors.

Hey, it's only 45 minutes away. As long as the meeting's later than 3:30, I can totally be at Hollins almost any day of the week (there's a few things I have no real options about attending), despite my classes.

A meetup before would be cool! Any time after 4:30 works for me Mon-Thurs, and then pretty much any time Fri-Sun. =D I know several other people doing it who haven't posted here, so if we decide on a day I'll round them up and let them know. I was also thinking about getting a couple flyers approved to be posted around campus - the generic NaNo one and the "End of the one-day novelist." I thought they might attract some attention... so many people here are creative writing majors, and yet a lot of the people I've talked to have never heard of NaNo, but they all seem interested. =D

I fully approve of flyers. The best way to go about it would be to print one off, then go by the student council office in upstairs Moody and ask them if they could stamp them. Otherwise, they'll take them down.
Really? A number of my friends have heard of NaNo that are Creative Writing majors - I was surprised to learn that one of my friends did NaNo two years ago, right under my nose. She's working on her thesis right now, but she might do NaNo anyway. 'Cause she's nutters.
Mmm.... Normally I'd say 4:30 on Tues works great, but there's talk of moving a meeting I have every week to that time, so I don't know if that'll work... Mon/Weds/Thurs I have class then work....
We could do Sat afternoon or Sun evening. In my experience, it's best to plan things on a Sun evening, so the people who've gone home for something are back, and a few might be doing last minute Mon papers/homework, but usually everyone's free.
Sooo.... Sat around 1, or Sun around 7 or 8? We can meet in the Rat, over at that circle of chairs and couches that's not in front of the tv? (Whichever day is good.)

Saturday or Sunday is good for me, though we may want to consider making the Sunday time earlier if we get some more people - I know SPEW meets Sundays at 7:00, so if anyone does that they would have a conflict. I don't know how long those meetings last, though, so it's possible 8:00 would be a good time, who knows?
Do we want to meet up this weekend for some pre-NaNo fun? Everyone would probably be back from break on Sunday. Next Sunday I'll be hosting a prospective or two so I probably won't be able to meet. Also! Are any of you interested in making an actual NaNo club? I know it might be difficult to manage a year-long club around a month-long event, but we could throw NaNoEdMo and Script Frenzy in there as well. Some of my friends said they would join if one was made, so I was just curious to see if there was any other interest. =D

Mmmm.... I keep forgetting about SPEW. (You'd think I remember, most of my friends are in it...) But, no. SPEW usually lasts until at least 9. My friend who's in SPEW thinks they're not having a meeting this weekend, however, so this might be a good Sunday to meet? Otherwise, Saturdays are probably better all around.
But, yes! This Sunday would be fun. Do we want to try to aim for 7 or 8? (Either one, I'll let everyone I know know when it is and see if they'll all drag their lazy bums down to the Rat. ^.^")
A club.... Oh dear. It would be little hard to keep up. I don't really know anything about NaNoEdMo or Script Frenzy, so I couldn't say how that would work.... ^.^"
It could be fun, but I don't know how much I - at least - could contribute. (I'm so bad with clubs. Speaking of, I really need to finish setting up the email for Foundation42.....)

Why don't we go for 7, if SPEW isn't meeting? As long as that's okay with everyone. =D I'll let my friends know what's happening, too. I completely understand about being bad with clubs - I told myself I was going to do SPEW every week and haven't yet made it to a meeting. XD

XD I didn't even bother with SPEW. I decided when they started it last year that it wasn't worth the stress of trying to write something new every other week and read through the packet every week.
EDIT: And, yes, 7's fine. See you in the Rat then.
And have a great Fall Break!

Is there anything in particular that we should bring? I know it's just a sort-of "get to know people" thing, but I'd also kinda like to hear what everyone is planning on writing. I've been bouncing ideas off of Bats, and she's been wonderful. More people means more plot bunnies!

Hey everyone! Despite checking in so late, I'm definitely going to try to be there tomorrow. :D I've done NaNo now for three years, and hope this year I'll finally hit that 50,000! Looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing ideas. I'll also put up some mirror notes and such. :D Funfun!

I apparently missed that first meeting because I was still driving home from Fall Break, but I thought I would drop by and say hi.
My name is Gwen, I'm a sophmore at Hollins and I'm a double major in Creative Writing and Classics. This is my third year doing NaNo and I'm going to be working on a fantasy novel that will hopefully end up a sequel to the novel I worked on two years ago for NaNo. I would love to attend meetings with y'all, but I know my schedule is crazy, so I don't want to hold y'all back. I'm really happy to see that there are more girls from Hollins doing this. Last year it seemed like me and my friends were the only ones!

Hey, Gwen!
Well, we kinda decided that for the month of November, we'd have meetings on Saturday in the Rat at around 7. Dunno if you can come, but here's hoping you make it!!
Also, for you an anyone else who joins this thread - do you particularly care if everyone friends you? 'Cause it was okay with everyone who was at last night's meeting, but I'm just making sure, really.... ^.^"

Inkhearted - Crown Duel = awesome. I just handed it off to another friend of mine so that she can start reading it and all my other friends are lined up to borrow it after that. I hope that this way I can slowly infect the world with the love of Mel and Bran and Vidanric. *grins*.

EVERYBODY!
hey hey hey! This is Ben K- your Point of Contact (POC) for the area, which is kinda tough because this area is HUGE! and because of that, I'd like to have everybody get together in Roanoke, being a major centerpoint, for a Kick-off. BUT! because I don't live in Roanoke, I'm trying to see if those Hollins University greats can set something up for us. I see you've got some Saturday dates for November lined up. If you wouldn't mind sharing some more info through a Nanomail, I'll post it up on the other boards!
Now!, I don't want to stop anybody from have a meeting out there in your own area - in fact, I'm planning on having one in Floyd this Thursday (the 23rd) to get information for those who are interested in my hometown. I'm hoping that everyone in Dublin, Christiansburg, B-burg, Fredricksburg, and every other *-BURG will be having meetings in their hometowns throughout the NaNoWriMo year, because I know it's tough to travel these great distances and high fuel costs.
Susan, our wonderful ML in the Shenandoah Region has asked us to join them in their Region so that our word counts can be counted with theirs. I told her how much I'd love to have our own region, and we just might in the next year or so, but for now I don't think it would be a bad idea to lend our help to some other Appalachian writers until we can establish our own full-scale region.
Whatcha think?
But we're out here, and we're all going to be kicking some major noveling ass this year, because we can, and we will!
Please don't hesitate to email me with questions or info or whatever you might need - I'm all geared up to go, and I'll help you boost that big brain of yours to keep on trucking!
Thanks.
Ben K.

DMoore - SPEW is a SciFi/Fantasy writers group that meets every Sunday night. It's set up a lot like one of the creative writing courses here on campus, except it is, of course, an extra-cirricular. It gives a lot of us a chance to write in genres that some of the professors in Advanced Creative Writing don't tend to allow. It's nice to get the feedback, escpecially since some of us are working on novels and can't really get it anywhere else.

(I have to ask. The number of community people who know where/what the Rat is seems to be a minority, if the questions we get at the library are anything to go by. ^.^")

Hey Hollins University Wrimos!
Just wanted to stop by and say hello. This is Susan one of the Co-MLs for the Shenandoah Valley Region.
Ben, aka brkirkland, has courageously stepped up to represent you as your Point of Contact within the Shenandoah Valley Region. The SVR was originally set up by NaNoWriMo HQs in 2007 to run from Winchester to Roanoke so you have always been part of our family. Now we would love for you come over and make it official! Your regional calendar is waiting to host your events and write-ins. The Floyd area meet-up on the 23rd has already been added.
Just as a side note: NaNoWriMo HQ is hoping to dismantle all the Elsewhere regions throughout the country and form smaller regions within them so that everyone can be represented in their own hometowns. You have a home with us but I did notice that the greater Roanoke area has a growing number of participants. Probably enough Wrimos to form your very own region. If you would rather go that direction all you need is someone to step up as ML. I am happy to assist that person in any way that I can to help make that happen for you if that is your wish. There may be enough time to get things set up for this year and I can walk you through the steps. If not, our door is always open. Word counts aside, we want you for your wit, wisdom and comradery.
Best regards and happy noveling!

I am going to write the third book in my scifi trilogy for nano--a scifi romance. I wrote the first book in the series last year for nano, and I'm editing the second one as we speak. (which means I gotta hurry up...got 2 chapters left to do before Nov 1. Ack!)
You all have any SF romance writers in your bunch?
