There are some events that are jointly planned with North County. If you are interested in events that are planned by the North County people alone, you are more than welcome to be a member of both regions.

If you want to plan events besides the ones that I have planned, you are more than welcome to. Just send an email to skatepixie@ymail.com and tell me what the event is, the address, the date (or day of the week), the times, and who people should contact.

I left the write-in schedule as is for Thanksgiving week. However, I will be out of town for part of that time due to going to Northern California to see my family. I know I will be gone on the Wednesday for sure. If people still want to have that write-in without me there, that's fine.

Check-In Coffee Shop!!

Welcome to the Check- In Coffee Shop! Here’s my invite:
The big Nano forums are a little too big for me to keep up with. I would like a Forum thread in which we friendly Orange County Nanoers can “check in” at. I personally would like the opportunity to say hi to fellow Nanoers as a little daily reward for me working so hard on my Nano. I would like to invite anyone who would like a little place to hang their hat to stop by the remainder of this month, let each other know how you’re doing, or shout out about your word count, or lack of. No exclusivity, except that if it stays Orange County, maybe we can actually follow the thread! It was fun to meet people at the write-ins, and maybe this could be a way to chitchat between write-ins. I hope for a no-pressure-zone forum: where people could check in whenever they want. I usually feel an awful compulsion to have to write to each person on a thread I started, and if I do that, maybe I’ll never get any actual Nano writing done. OF course, if you’re the type that likes to reply individually to everyone AND can get your word count done as well, feel free! Yet, I’d still like a place to stop in and say “Hi”; a virtual coffee shop. Anyone’s welcome who wants to do the same! This is just my attempt to make contact and maybe have a little virtual accountability. If we have a little place where we can show up and mark our progress with real people, maybe we’ll encourage each other and perhaps it will help our motivation! (I know I sure need it: I started late and am currently 11,000 words behind!)

Because I’d like it to work as a “check- in” place like going to a regular coffee shop, and because I lack creativity at the moment, I’m calling the thread, the “Check- In Coffee Shop.”

So, Welcome to the Check-In coffee shop! Feel free to hang your hat (and describe it if you want!), share or “bring in” what motivates you to write (for me it IS my hat) and offer virtual baked goods, treats, and such. Bring in your buddies, it’s your local shop!. It is my hope that it can be a place of virtual encouragement, laughter, and all the comfort of a coffee house. I imagine it as a brick walled place with comfy couches, chocolate-y coffee drinks (or whatever you like), good treats and music, and a blazing fire in the fireplace.

So, the doors are open! Who's making coffee?

There is a note about this on the page about donating when broke, but I wanted to let everyone here know about the partnership with goodsearch.com

When you go to the website and put in Office of Letters and Light as your charity, every search you do will donate $.01 to NaNoWriMo and ScriptFrenzy. Think about how many searches you do a day - 10? 20? I probably do about 50, which means in a month I can earn the OLL $15. You can even install goodsearch to most browsers and search from the bar. Awesome, right?

Need to do some research? Use goodsearch for all of your research queries this month. Then you're researching for your novel *and* paying for the ability to do this next year. Sweet!

Even if you just switch for November, it'll make a big difference to the event!

Write-in Friday?

I haven't been able to make many write-ins because of my schedule, which is a shame. So, would anyone be interested in a write-in Friday at It's a Grind Coffeehouse (the same one used for Monday's Mission Viejo write in) from about 6 until 9? Plus, it would be a great chance to catch up if your behind on your novel.

Hola, I need to move a handful of slackers onto a cruise ship which is going to be crushed by the Panama canal? These people work at coffee shops & record stores--they have no money and nothing really going on in their lives to justify a cruise.

Costa Mesa Write-In Ideas

There seem to be a bunch of people in the Costa Mesa/Huntington Beach area. I'd like to have aTuesday evening write-in in Costa Mesa from 5pm to whenever. However, I don't know that area that well, so I don't know what cafe would be a good choice. Any ideas?

I started five days late! Hi!!

Hi Orange County Nanowrimos!

So.. um, I have started five days late. *points to sad wordcount* But, in 2004 I started a week late and finished a day late. I tried a second time last year "('07) I started on time, but was taken out by a very unfair podiatrist who didn't tell to me that what I was told would be a "minor procedure" would actually become surgery and lay me up for a month complete with Vicodin. (Why?! Of all months... why?! ) I did interact with some of ya'll on the forums last year and was so looking forward to the write in at the Grand Californian. I want to go this year. It is such a good idea! If those surroundings don't inspire amazing prose, then... well... I'll find another place!

So! Third time's a charm I hope!! Wish me luck! I do hope to make it to some of the write ins. I went to one in Orange last year but only one person showed up. Even with the low turn out, It still was so much fun to go out and have the experience of writing with another author, and hanging out in a coffee shop writing. It was very fun and motivating, and I was so sad when it was cut short by the podiatrist of doom.

As usual, I plan to write in my motivational "revolutionary cap" and sometimes with a fluffy yellow ducky pen.

So, again, Hi to anyone procrastinating with their writing!

It's time to expose a little conspiracy that began in the Grand Californian lobby last night- the oh-so-exclusive NaNo DJ night. The get together, we'll call it NNWMOCDJNGTG for short, is where we'll bust out our very best writing music for a hardcore, full-on, uncensored audio inspiration session. Robbie Williams may be involved.

The plan is that anyone who wants to can send me a playlist, say around ~10 minutes long, and we'll play through everyone's mixes back to back through the session. If only a few people sign up we can make them 20 minute playlists, but if get a decent turn out we'll cut them down to 10 or 15 minutes. If you are interested let me know what day would be best, but right now I'm thinking of the 19th, maybe around 7 PM?

And I'm sorry, but Robbie Williams won't be there... I lied. But if some one wants to bring in a track off The Ego Has Landed, I'm sure plenty of people would dig it.

PS - it's not your imagination - I did just start throw out 2 back-to-back sentences starting with "and" and "but."

Well, I seem to have written myself into a place where I'm stuck, because part of the book is supposed to be taking place over about a few weeks, and another part is supposed to happen over a few years, and both parts are also supposed to happen at the same time, with characters in each part so I have no idea how to fix that! Anyone have suggestions??

So, what are everyone's ideas for Nano?

I've got two bouncing around.

One is a skatefic (figure skating fiction) about two characters of mine I've played on an RPG and really hashing them out and their relationship, as they met very young (a pair team), got married eventually, etc. And I was thinking I'll kill her off and it will be his POV thinking about their lives together.

The other is a young adult historical fiction. The idea is there are 3 or 4 girls who are in a history class together, who are assigned to do a project, and they get some heirloom from someone's family or mother or whatever, and they time travel! But it kinda messes up and they end up in the wrong time period/place... so it will be kind of humorous. I'm a double poli sci and history major so it would be fun to nerd it up!

Irvine Write-In Ideas

The Irvine Write-Ins are scheduled for Monday at 5:00 PM at the Starbucks in the Spectrum.

I have a Monday Night Library commitment which does not end until 9:00 PM.

For me, getting anywhere in the OC at 5:00 PM is a traffic headache these days.

Starbucks is Starbucks is Starbucks.

In my experience, The Spectrum has the worlds worst parking.

I realize that all of the above is just me being lame and CLEARLY not a good indicator for my success in this years "literary abandon", but is there any chance that we could move / reschedule this?

I am thinking somewhere closer to UCI and later in the day? Perhaps, 9:00 PM @ Lee's Sandwiches?

Lee's is well lit--with in door and outdoor seating, generally has some parking later in the day, is near a library, and serves coffee (and, perhaps most importantly, is near a Peet's!). I am not sure about the power outlet situation (which is critical) and other issues that may sink this idea--or even if the Write-ins are "open for discussion", but I wanted to put this out there...Thanks, David S

2008 NaNoWriMo Special Events

Even though Orange County was divided into two regions this year all of our big events are planned for both regions to attend together. Here's a list of all the great special activities your ML's have planned for you. Put them on your calendar and plan to attend as many as you can.

NaNoWriuMo First Annual Pre-Planning Meeting

Thursday, October 23rd 7:00 pm at Starbucks on The Plaza, 44 Plaza Square.

For all of us who aren't quite sure what we'll write this year and for those who know but want to bounce around some ideas and get feed back. No actual writing ~ It's too early! ~ Just note taking and idea getting!

If you have a writing muse/mascot from last year bring them in and spruce them up with a great new outfit and a fresh new look for 2008.

Afterwards we'll take our muses out for an early dinner and the first NaNo Write-In for 2008. If you don't need a new muse join us between 2:30 and 3:00 (where they serve Italian) for writing, friendship and great food.

Hola, Last year, I used Stephen King's methodology of letting the story develop through characters--this was a mistake.

Basically, I spent a lot of time developing characters and placing them in interesting situations and waited for a story to emerge. A story never emerged--it just did not happen, which is not to say that I did not write a great novel--it was just something that will likely never be read by anyone but me...in any event, this year I brainstormed the main characters for my story with Jack (age 7) and Kate (age 5).
