hey, just wondering if there are any other folks from the yampa valley area (moffat, routt counties) on here. this is my first nano, but it'd be cool to know if there are others up here working on a novel as well.

Hey there ktlily!
This looks like your first NaNo -- WELCOME!
I'm not sure if anyone else is closer to you, but Alamosa is about an hour and a half from Moffat, so if you get restless one night and want to come to a write-in, please feel free to swing by!

Yes, I'm here in Craig. This is my second NaNo, and I'm delighted to hear that someone else in the valley is involved.

welcome, and feel free to chat with us all ya want, moosesal.
we have one week before this starts, and i am starting to get excited in a hyperventilating sort of way. i had an idea, but now i'm not so sure it's the one i'll use. i have scenes in mind for it, but no real plot. and i have a ton of questions about it, too. like, why is there a base on the dark side of the moon? why is it secret? who cares? oh well, i guess when i sit down and start it'll settle into something...

Hyperventilating sounds about right. Every time I think about what I need to do next month--BESIDES NaNo--I start hyperventilating. Then I tell myself that all I have to do is sort of get the story on paper--it can even be total garbage because rewriting is where I'll actually craft it. So I'm going to use free writing (where you set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and your pen has to keep moving and forming words constantly) and then transcribe it onto the computer for another 5 minutes and then go again. It's the only way I can get the story out without stalling over competing phrasing, word choices, POV choices, etc. If I do that, I should be able to churn out 700-1000 wph (gulp), so I can get my day's writing done in 2-3 hours. I hope.
In the meantime, I'm trying to create as many plot cards for my scenes as I can so I can have some idea of what I have to write each day. I'm not a pantser at heart. I actually tried that last year, starting with a really great scene, but I stalled out at 30,000 words because it wasn't working. I included stuff that should have waited until the last third of the book, so it changed everything, screwed up everything, and I couldn't seem to get back on track. I know: I should have written down the change I needed to make and then written on from there, pretending that I hadn't made that major screwup, but I couldn't. Besides, my characters seemed paranoid about nothing, and nothing made sense.
Chris Baty may think that the muse comes through and pulls those things together, but mine lives in a poor reception area, and I can only get through intermittently, and then with lots of static. ;) So it took me a year to get things squared away so I can start again. Oh, and that great scene? I'm still going to use it, but it comes nearly 2/3 of the way through the book and not only helps the hero and heroine get away from the villain, but also reveals the hero's secret to the heroine, with very negative results for their relationship.
If you made it this far, is anyone up for a write-in one Saturday morning or afternoon during the month? Maybe November 22--the Saturday before Thanksgiving. That might be a time when some of us need a special boost to keep writing.

i think a write-in is a great idea! i think i can do the morning of the 22nd, so we'll tentatively schedule for then...
have you looked at the yWriter software? it is free, and once you get past the set-up is pretty amazing for scene organization, character notes, and things like that. i'm still going to use word documents for composition purposes, but as far as outlining, planning, and tracking junk, yWriter has helped me already. the website is
www.spacejock.com/yWriter4.html
i'm a technology nut, so this appeals to me.
anyway, just 4 days to go...

I'm in Meeker! Also my first year for NaNo. I'm up in Craig fairly frequently (gotta shop somewhere, ya know?). I'd love to know when y'all are going to get together and I'll try to coordinate my schedule!

Re a get together: How about 10 am on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Serendipity?
In the meantime, how is everyone doing? I only got 1010 words written yesterday, but I expect to do better from here on, especially since I wasn't using my free-writing technique. I wasn't able to get onto the NaNo site at all yesterday, but I assume that problem will ease up in the next few days when not as many people are trying to access the site.
Keep writing!

Hey, Laci, that's great! You guys are doing a great job with your word counts, too. I need to knuckle down and do some serious writing so I can at least catch up to 1000 words per day.

I used to have family who lived in Craig, does that count?*bg* Seriously, if any of you make it to Junction for a shopping trip or whatever, check out the Grand Junction forum and let us know when you'll be in town. Maybe we could have a meet-up.

I'm wondering how insane I will be by the end of this week. I only had 15,000-some words as of Saturday, and I was thinking about either ditching my story or aiming lower (30,000?), but now, thatnks to a little write-in encouragement at Serendipity, I think I'm going for it... 50,000, here I come!
I wrote about 2,500 words Saturday, 5,000 words yesterday and 5,000 words today, and... I'm.... going to make it?...
I think this is the biggest, hardest writing endeavor I've ever taken on completely voluntarily. It's one thing to get your writing lesson in, or your speech done, or your article written, or a play script completed. I volunteer to write things (paid or not)because I love to write, but in the end it's always the pressure of deadlines and other people's expectations that makes me finish.
This, on the other hand, is completely crazy. And I think, despite all the hard work it's turning out to be, I'm having FUN with it, because I'm finding out I CAN do it, and just because I WANT to do it!
I'm also beginning to calculate the expenses, such as little-to-no sleep, insanity, chocolate overdoses, aching hands, aching social life...
It's an exhilarating sort of pain, isn't it?
