Re-writing a Fairytale.

At the moment it is between a choice of three: The Littlest Mermaid, The Twelve Dancing Princesses or The Nutcracker.

I'm also having a crack at the sci-fi genre. This is my first time doing the writing month as well so it should be good. :)

Fantasy. I'm taking a novel I did several years ago, tossing that draft out, and starting completely from scratch. I will certainly do a better job with it this way than trying to fix a too-broken draft.

Hi, this is my first NaNoWriMo, and I'm intending to write sci-fi as well with a small-town, isolated planet setting.

Hehe, everyone is a sci fi nut. I'm a fantasy girl, but I'm being boring and sticking with chic lit this year. I'm pregnant, so it kind of fits.

That's my excuse anyway.

Hi I'm NOR but not prepared to drive to the city to meet people... parking sux.

I am still undecided on what to write :S

I was thinking of sci-fi but I also have ideas for a speculative history novel... basically a 'what if such'n'such event had not happened' type of plot.

good luck all

Hi all!

I'm working on a Fantasy novel this year. I'm a fantasy geek at heart and last year I started to work on my novel but never managed past the 12,000 word mark. I'm determined this year though!

I am personally torn between SF fantasy and romance.... maybe some twisted combination of all of the above. this is my second attempt a few years ago i gave up due to exams but I am giving it a second shot even though I have exams and work and sporting committments .... if not now when?

After posting above....

I have now got a kinda maybe plausible plot for a sci-fi novel

Brief LOL Description : Earth's colonies orbit the moon (which we are strip mining for resources), having mostly depleted our own planet. A cataclysmic event occurs, leaving the earth uninhabitable in a matter of months. The refugees are installed in temporary living space on the moon while a portion of the survivors seek a new star with a planet that can support human life, intending to scout, establish a base, then come back to rescue the survivors. Meanwhile archaeological discoveries of alien technologies are made within the surface of the moon, and it becomes easier for humans to live there. Conflicts emerge, mutiny entails, and the survival of the human race becomes a choice of destination .. the moon or the unknown star system.

Well that's my plan. But I am not sure if my characters are going to agree with me as they are not yet speaking to me

Sounds like a good plot to me. Too many novels reach straight for the distant galaxies and I think a nice moon-based story would be a decent change. (I also happen to be a massive fan of the Martin Magnus books from the 50's, which featured Moon/Venus/Mars rather than other stars.)

Re the characters, just give two of them opposing goals and you're set. E.g. military vs scientific leader, but as a twist the military guy is good and the scientist is overbearing and impatient.

I like the idea of speculative / historical revision but I just don't have the knowledge of actual history for this to actually work. Especially to get the whole thing out in one month. Instead I'm going for a YA-Fantasy-Mystery-type-thang
