We had a great meetup at Bruegger's this past Saturday, and it was so nice to see we have some new members!
How do people feel about a pre-kickoff lunch at the Metro 20 Diner on Western Avenue Saturday October 18th?
And what time works best for you?

Sorry I missed the get-together yesterday. I thought I'd have this tech project finished by now, but it's an ever-growing monster.

I can't make it on the 18th, but hope everyone has fun!

18th is up in the air for me, my family is coming to visit me that weekend, but I don't know if they are coming Saturday or Sunday....

The 18th is good for me! I was going to go to the Sheep & Wool Fest that day, but all the book signings I wanted to go to aren't until Sunday. >.>

I think that is a good day for Heidi and I, but I'm not sure yet. It'll depend on when/if my family celebrates all the October birthdays again this year (three members of the family have birthdays in that month, one who's birthday was yesterday, my dad's is the 20th and his sister's is the 28th).

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the Metro 20 Diner.. But, I will go where my group goes!! I'm good for October 18th, but I have to leave by 1:30. Jeffery Deaver is doing a reading and book signing at the Bethlehem Public Library at 2 p.m. and I can't wait to meet him! I'm studying up on the thriller/suspense/murder mystery genres for my upcoming NaNo novel. For anyone not familiar with the name but may be familiar with a title, the movie The Bone Collector was based on his novel of the same name. If anyone is interested in going, the library may have some tickets.

I am a maybe for the 18th, I am running another 5K that day and am not sure of all the time issues for that activity. What time will the lunch start? Will you need a firm commitment before hand for reservations, or is like Bruegger's where you can just show up? Thanks for organizing this!

I don't ask for firm commitments - it's always just a show-up-if-you-can thing, and I don't think the Metro 20 even takes reservations. But it's nice and inexpensive so everyone can afford it, and that's my main criteria. I do like to get an idea of how many people will be at the official kick-off Nov. 1 so I can make up little candy bags for everyone, but I still have to pick a place for the kick-off. Last year we met at the IHOP in East Greenbush, but some votes have been cast for Panera this year. Any preferences?

Sorry not to have been on the board more yesterday - yours booly hasn't been getting a whole lot of sleep (good practice for November?), but I'm trying to get caught up!

Panera gets my vote for the kickoff. And is it too early to pitch an idea for the TGIHO party?

My best friend and I don't have a vehicle or access to a vehicle, so anything on a bus route works for us for the kick-off.

I tried using Google maps to figure out how the heck to get there by bus, but it wasn't very helpful. Does anyone know how to bus from the Washington Park area to the IHOP and/or Panera?

I'm here! Yeah, I know, I suck... but I'm still here, with no support, no love, and no plot. Just like last year.

I wish I did have support. My parents think I'm crazy, I haven't any friends, my plot is about to burst into flames, and my plot bunnies are sterile... how can you support? I just moved, now I'm down near Catskill, I'm losing what was left of my mind... :(

They call it a support system 'cause it is a system, and we're it. :) It's just as possible to support via the internet as it is in real life.

Remember Neil Gaiman's pep talk last year? Even the most experienced, most popular of authors have those moments when everything seems to be falling apart and they think their writing sucks. But then comes the breakthrough, the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.

I've personally been working on a story for three years now. I'm on draft 5. But it's still worth working on, so I'm plugging away, and you should, too. :)

I suppose, but It's really hard when you are home, alone, trying to write, and you want to cal somebody or talk to somebody and be like, "Help me!" And there is nothing there... silence...

I don't want to sound annoying, which I probably do, but I tried doing NaNo alone last year and I totally got lost. I still won, but it wasn't as much fun as some other's experiences. I guess I'm a little jealous of people who made friends through this and who have a huge support group, hehe.

Oh well, I'll just know what to expect this year.

My family finally got together and figured out when we're having our "October Birthdays" party, so the 18th is all good for Heidi and me. Metro 20 on Western Ave. Do we have a time yet?

I've always wanted to try Panera, but which one were you referring to? I wouldn't want to show up at the wrong one, after all.

*Newbie Waves*

Hi, newbie to the NaNo.
I'd like to try and come, meet some fellow authors. I swear I feel like I'm the only one here in my area! Nice to know I'm not.

I'm Tara, I'm in Cohoes!

Hey Tara! Welcome to NaNo. No worries, you're not the only one in the area, obviously. Glad to have you with us. Good luck on your NaNo, by the way!

18th is out for me, my family is coming to visit me that day...

As for the *actual* kickoff on Nov. 1, anywhere is fine as long it is accessible by bus...

Can somebody nanomail me the correct dates, times, and places? I don't always have time to check the forum, and by time I do I'm so lost and confused I have no clue where anything is, lol

Thanks in advanced!

I think 1:00 would be a good time to get together at the Metro 20 next Saturday - any objections, anyone?

And there are several Paneras in the Capital District: Latham Farms, Crossgates Commons, East Greenbush at the Walmart Plaza and (I gather) one in Glenmont as well. Give me a hint if you have a preference!

Panera Preferences: Glenmont, Crossgates Commons, East Greenbush (in that order).

As for next weekend's lunch - If it's at 1 p.m., I can only stay a half an hour or so because I have tickets to the Jeffery Deaver reading at 2 p.m. And that's also the same time as the October meeting of the Sisters in Crime (if anyone from last month's meeting wanted to attend again).

I was going to go to that Jeffery Deaver reading! Just never got my tickets...

I prefer the Panera in Glenmont, it's quieter and there will probably be more space for us... wait, can I come?

I prefer the EG Panera when I'm at home, and the X-gates Commons one would be good when I'm staying in Schenectady (which I do on occasion).

I was very fond of last year's meetings at Bruegger's in Stuyvesant Plaza. :)

Also, I happen to have a show on the 15th at a coffeehouse that I'm pretty sure is on the bus lines. I'd have to double-check. I thought it might be fun to have the halfway party there if no one objects.

I also have a preference for the Panera in Glenmont, as it's just that much closer to Catskill. ^_^ It's a straight shot up 9W, so it's also easy for my sister to find (which means I can make her drive). I'll go wherever, though.

1PM sounds fine for Saturday. *is starting to get really excited about NaNo* Oh, and Heidi announced NaNo at our church. We've got at least one person interested. When we see her at Choir, I'll ask her if she'd like to join us this Saturday as well.

OK - well several votes seem to be in and here's the schedule I've come up with so far:

This Saturday - lunch at the Metro 20 Diner in Guilderland at 1:00

Kick-off Party - Panera Bread in Glenmont on route 9W - 4:00 to whenever!

Looking forward to seeing people!!!

I won't be able to make it to the kickoff if it's in Glenmont. :( :( :( That's almost an hour's drive for me.

Are there any others here from north of Albany, like in the Clifton Park/Saratoga area, who might want to get together separately? Shlepping to Glenmont cuts into actual writing time.
