Hey everyone, I was just wondering if the Olympia group was going to be having any events or if we should brainstorm some. Whats the ML say?

Since Nov. 1st is a Saturday, there could be a write in. Or a pre-party (pre-Halloween).
Definitely something.
I'm very excited :)

Ha ha, that'd be awesome for some events. I'd totally drag my butt there. (:

Despite the embarrassment of being dragged away in life's undertow the past two years of NaNo, I would most definitely make myself present. :)

I have weekends off this year, and I work days... so I'm pretty much open.

No more sitting at work, whining because I would rather be at NaNo get togethers.

I'm glad there's so much interest for events! As far as the kick-off party goes, I'm planning for Saturday, Nov. 1st, since our Halloween kickoff last year was less than successful. My question then is whether anyone has a good suggestion for a place, such as restaurant/coffee shop. I'd like to stay away from bars so that our younger participants can attend. Also, I am willing to host events at my apartment on the west side of town, but be warned that I have cats in case you're allergic. Thoughts?

We can go to the Java Flow in downtown Oly for our meetings, I'm sure the owner wouldn't mind... it's a nice coffee shop has tables and chairs and whatnot, and isn't nearly as busy with foot traffic as some of the others. And unlike Starbucks, it has pretty decent coffee too.

I appreciate that VERY much. lol. Because I could definitely not come if it was a bar. D:

As for ideas to as where? I'm no help. I actually don't live right in Oly, but near it. And I don't know too much about where to get anywhere but the mall (that's the 'rents main purpose of going there). But I think Kaikuahine had a decent idea.

Batdorf and Bronson, at 516 Capitol, has good coffee and a 12-seater table you can reserve. And I work there so I can reserve it.

I totally dig the B&B idea! I love it there, and the coffee is yummy. <3 Ambiance is pretty great too, especially regarding people-watching. Awesome place to work :)

Batdorf sounds great! What are their hours? I'd like to shoot for afternoon/early evening if possible.
*edit*
Oh look it says right there on their website. :-) Looks like they close at 6 on Saturdays. How does 4:30 - 5:30 sound to everyone?

Cattin's in Tumwater... they even have a "back room" you can "reserve" for functions (free, I believe) or just show up and sit back there. I'm not fond of downtown, so I guess I'd prefer something on the west side or tumwater area.

Ok...so we dont just jot down ideas for hours (yes yes i know its hard not to, we're writers) How about we narrow it down to three and then vote...the people who weren't present, thats too bad lol. At least one area in downtown, and one in west side in the voting ballots, so we satisfy people who live in different areas and give them their chance.

Hey Geary :)
My vote is also for Batdorf's, and any time after 2PM works for me. I would find it quite difficult to get to the other side of town that day.

Based on all of your feedback so far, I've scheduled our first three events with the hopes that everyone will be able to make it out to at least one event! You can check out the event calender for all the details. Here's a quick summary;

Sat. November 1 - Kick-Off at Batdorf & Bronson, 4:30-5:30
Sun. November 9 - Write-In at Mud Bay Coffee 3:00-4:30
Sat. November 15 - Write-In at Lacey Library 3:30-5:00

Hope to see you all there!

Are all three events laptop-friendly, or are we kickin' it old school with pen and paper?

Yes, there will be limited availability of outlets at each event - your best bet is to charge your batteries before coming. Most places frown on too many cords on the floor since it's a fire hazard. (As if a little thing like fire is important compared to the epic thrill of novel writing!)

I'm gonna need a plug-in because my macbook has the dreaded battery-that-has-bricked-itself-for-no-particular-reason-and-now-will-not-hold-a-charge-which-is-particularly-frustrating-when-the-cord-gets-pulled!
Ahem.

It all sounds like a lot of fun but I'm too far out (other side Shelton) and I don't drive very often due to the FMS crud so I won't be joining you for any RL events...so have a sip from your B&B coffees for me please!

Lisa...is there any way I can score some "swag" this year? My NanoWrimo stickers are starting to peel off my 'puter, LOL.

Awesome! B&B has awesome coffee, and I know I'll make it to that one. As to the other two, I'm mostly sure I'll be able to head over there this year.

I can't wait to see everyone!

Not sure I'll be able to make any of 'em, being as two are downtown (pretty sure that's where Mud Bay is, yes?), and the library would be a bit of a walk even though it's only like a 15 minute drive from me. Of course, I could borrow a bike on the 15th; it'd do. But if I can manage to get to them, it seems like they have quieter environs than the meet-up I managed to get to last year, and I <3 quieter environs. xDD

Of course, if I can snag rides again this year, you will see me being HAPPEH. Or something. xD

Have you checked out the bus system and schedules? That's how I get most of my wandering about done, and they're really good about having routes and such that goes most of the places downtown and around the area.

If you want a bus riding buddy or somethin, I wouldn't mind tracing routes and meeting up with you or something. Like I said, that's how I'm going to do my traveling to and from.

Well, there is that.. but it'd take me about an hour to walk to the nearest bus stop. (Unless there's one in the other direction that's closer..) Could bike to it, yar, but I haven't a way to tie the bike to the rack on the bus. Anyway, I might look into that. Perseverance is the name of the NaNoing, after all. (Besides, I need to buy NaNo snacks and won't have money 'til after the 28th, and then it just makes sense to wait for the post-Halloween sales. xD)

Hm, I don't know about stops near your house, but I do know that they have awesome bike racks on the busses, no ties required... they fit in a slot like thing and there's some sort of bar that comes up to keep them in place. I haven't looked too closely at it, but it looked cool. And I've never seen any flying bikes.

I'll bring my camera to the 11/1 4:30 meeting at B&B and take a picture of anyone who wants one for the Nano website. No charge. Size it up and email it to you for upload to the website. You can see some of my work on my website at www.gearybuxton.net.
