Okay folks, it's Nano 2008. We in the sticks must band together! Check out www.nwrlib.org as William Kent Krueger will be speaking at four libraries on Oct. 29th and 30th in the Northwest Minnesota corner.

Yippee. I love TRF, and Krueger! I'll try to make it up there to hear him. Thx for the heads up!

I work at the headquarters for the library. We are pretty excited for the visit! Great to see some more NWer's on here!

He'll also be at the Bemidji library on October 23. Kent was at a Craig Johnson book signing I attended earlier this summer and he's just a heckuva nice guy, not to mention an outstanding writer. Actually, they both are.

are there any writing groups in this part of the state, either formal or temporary for november? i have recently moved to the blackduck area. i'm in the process of opening a new (sort of) business, but i think i'll have a little more free time to write than i did last year... i would be pleasantly surprised if there was anyone else within a 30 mile radius attempting this project. (i'm located north of blackduck, so bemidji is about 35 miles distant). hell, i would even be willing to host such a gathering, though it would have to be sundays only...

I'm in Red Lake, but it's the distance! It would probably take us about an hour to travel to and from a meeting - precious writing time! (I'm looking forward to 11/1 ^_^)

I'm in Thief River, so if anyone is up for a meetup during NaNo, I'm game.

Living north of Bemidji but working in TRF. I'm not sure how things are going to shake out yet--that commute's a killer--but I'd be game for a writing group IFF my schedule slows down a little by then.

Living in Bemidji, and just making much ado. I have gotten a novel in the revising stages, though. Hurrah!

Since we are all pretty spread out, we could have a chat once a week or something through AIM or Messenger. It's just an idea. It would be nice to have some kind of "help" from others.

I would recommend meeting at your local libraries. So you TRF'ers you go there (can Love2write organize it?) and the fellow from Blackduck, perhaps the jaunt to Bemidji is worth it? I participate w/ the Manitoba Nano (aka Nanitoba) because I like going to Winnipeg, but understand that being a stay-at-home mom w/ 3 young children would make anyone want to flee once in awhile, even if it is a 2 hour drive.

There's an artists guild in Baudette (primarily for painters) and an arts council in Roseau, but I'm not sure what they do. Nothing in Warroad, just a lot of dreamers, but few organizers. If you feel strongly about it, then I say create the group! All it really requires is an invitation and a public meeting place.

I've decided I won't be traveling. It's just too time-consuming, I hate to say! I'm feeling pretty confident that I'll be able to hit 50,000 words. I've sketched out my novel and will probably end at around 90,000. I can write 1,500 words an hour. In the past I've written 4,000 words in one evening; 7,000 words one Saturday. But! I've gotten too cocky before and have ended up scrambling. I think I'll wait until the end of November or beginning of December for any get-togethers or celebrations - just to be on the safe side! I'd like to keep in touch during November, however, by postings. It would be nice to meet and have coffee - maybe around the upcoming holidays?

I caught his signing at the Bemidji library last night. If you have any interest in writing, do NOT miss him. He talked for well over an hour, the majority of it on the subject of writing in general rather than anything specific to his books. In fact, a number of the folks in the audience last night had never even read one of his books, but still stayed for the whole event and had a great time.

...And if you haven't read him, do yourself a favor and pick up one of his books either before the signing or, if it's like Bemidji, he'll have some available for purchase. He's an outstanding writer.

I believe Krueger also at one time received a grant from our Region 2 Arts Council. A person I work with was prodding me to apply for the same funding but I don't feel I'm ready yet. Just thought I'd throw that out there for those of you who ARE ready. ^_^ Maybe a writer's grant would help you. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to getting started this coming Friday at midnight. Best wishes to all Nanos!! ^_~

Miko -

He did receive some type of arts grant. You can read a little bit about it on the NW Regional Libary website. www.nwrlib.org and look on the right hand for a blog entry on Krueger, or something like that. There it explains briefly how it came to be that he was able to tour our little corner of MN. I only read it quickly, but I think it may have said that the grant was to pay for him to come to this area, not for help in the writing. But I very well could be wrong, so don't quote me.

Also, you'll see a photo of Krueger sitting at a table signing books. The woman he's chatting with is me!

Famous by association,
Kim

Now that the pipeliners have moved on, I've finally found an apartment in TRF to cut down on the commutes from the Bemidji area during the week. If anyone in that neck of the woods prairie wants to do some writing, I'm game.

I like TRF, too. I used to live in the city; now I love small towns like TRF, Bemidji ... and Park Rapids. I'm not going to be able to do much writing for a while. My mom's in the hospital down in Park Rapids. Otherwise I'd take you up on your offer. *sigh* Well, that's the breaks. Best wishes on your writing! :)
