All this talk of write-ins in Davis and other areas made me realize that we still haven't talked about write-ins in Sacramento proper.
With Weatherstone gone (or at least heavily altered), that venue may not work out as well. My initial suggestions for new write-in locations are:
1. Panera Bakery on Howe Avenue
2. Borders Books on Fair Oaks
3. Cafe Tupelo on whatever street that's on
4. True Love Cafe on K Street
5. Various Starbucks
Any suggestions, anyone?

Tupelo -- we had write-ins there last year, right? It's around H or J & 56th or something, right next to Sacramento Magazine. In other words ... whatever street that is.
If Old Soul/Weatherstone could just put more tables in there, that would still be a great venue.
I haven't been to True Love since they split up shop with the Mediterranean deli, but my impression is that most of their seating is now outside?
I know people hate Starbucks, but the one on N & Alhambra is quite large and even has a study room.
Is the Java City on Capitol & 18th too small?
Keepin' my eyes and ears open ...

The Borders on Fair Oaks sounds good. Also, is anyone in more of a Citrus Heights-Carmichael area? If so, then the huge Barnes & Noble at Birdcage would work VERY well.

I'm in Rocklin, so a write-in somewhere in the Citrus Heights-Carmichael area would be preferable to Sacramento, but I think I could manage to get to the Borders on Fair Oaks if need be. :)

L, you're right, Starbucks doesn't offer free wi-fi. But do we need it? Isn't that just more of a distraction to, you know, when we're SUPPOSED TA BE WRITING?!? :P

Cafe Tupelo is good, but smallest. Panera Bakery on Howe is good. Borders Books on Fair Oaks is my third choice.
I agree about wifi. Do we really need it?
What day? It has been Sundays at Weatherstone. I usually work until 5 or 5:30 on Sundays, but that is still the best day for me.
No mention has been made about the approximate time of the actual write-in. Start at 5:00, and at 8:00? Start an hour earlier at 4:00 and end an hour later at 9:00?

Honestly, Borders on Fair Oaks is iffy on finding a spot to sit more than two people.
I like Panera and Tupelo. I also haven't been to True Love more than twice and a lot of seating was outside. I may have to go check the place out. And honestly, writing without the net, I'd get a lot more done, so any Starbucks works for me. i like the one at the Manzanita/Fair Oaks split in Carmichael.

And I've been booted out of there twice in the past few weeks when they closed the cafe to set up seats for an evening's entertainment (authors or musicians).

Borders is routinely not very friendly to people setting up camp at their tables.
I remember being fairly impressed with Tupelo last year.
By the way, most if not all Peets now offers free wifi (way to hop on board finally!) although their stores usually don't have a lot of seating. The one on Alhambra and Folsom is actually quite large compared to most Peets, though. So it's not a great place (nor a suggestion) for big write-ins, but just a note if you're by your lonesome for the day!

I have to admit I don't get the concept of a write-in. I mean, if it really helps peeps produce, great. But ... how ... ?
That said, no place is a bad location for me so long as there's a chair and nice folks and it works for doing NaNo.

It definitely depends on your personality. Other than the social aspect of getting to hang out with other nutjobs, er, I mean dedicated writers like myself, it helps me to be "accountable." If I'm home alone, I will procrastinate by cleaning (!), watching tv, visiting the fridge, rearranging the sock drawer, etc. Not everyone has my attention span issues. Working outside the house alone can work for me, but I honestly get a bit of a writer's buzz off shared energy by proximity.
Again, it is different for every writer. :)
But the write-ins are fun, regardless of how productive they may or may not be on a given night.

Different people get different things out of write-ins. It's nice to socialize with other writers and chat. But we frequently also have "word wars", where we all write diligently for a set period of time: usually ten or fifteen minutes. Sometimes we make it a contest and give up prizes based on a criteria that I personally don't reveal until after the word war has started.
Some people don't find write-ins very useful, though, and find that the presence of other writers is a distraction. And that's perfectly okay as well. No one's going to judge you if you find that they're not helpful and choose not to go. :)

Okay, I'm going to make a couple of suggestions. Please feel free to say YAY or NAY on any of them.
Folsom Fridays! At the Borders in Folsom. Kat knows what I'm talking about.
Sacramento Sundays! At the new Peet's on Alhambra and Folsom (I can talk to the manager and arrange something, I'm sure, since I work around the corner from there). Let's say 2:00.
Tupelo Thursdays! Thursday nights at Tupelo, starting at 7. Though a number of us won't be there on the first Thursday, because we have a separate commitment.
I'm going to put these onto the calendar for now. Please comment on this thread if these don't work out or you want more.

Well, yeah, it's a distraction, but there's also resources out there. I know last year I used random name generators, because it was one less thing stopping me dead in my tracks. Plus, some folks store notes on the triple dubya. ;)
It's not crucial but it's nice. That said, the Borders wouldn't have free wifi either.

Actually, let's move the Folsom write-ins to It's a Grind across East Bidwell from the Borders. The Borders is okay, but the vibe seemed so much better the one time all the Folsom folks took over the It's a Grind.
(Unless the Folsom people want to jump in here and say "No, kat, really, the Borders is okay.")

It's a Grind sounds fine, personally - location doesn't matter too much...as long as there's still a write-in in Folsom. Until next year at least I won't be able to get ANYWHERE past Folsom...(parents = transportation.)

Not offhand, at the moment, but if you'd like to set one up, that would be awesome. It's pretty simple, just pick a time and date and a place and post about it here. (I'll see it and add it to the calendar.) And then you show up. People may or may not show (in 2006, my Roseville meetups were mostly Tama and me) but if you're consistent, they'll pick up.

I like Panera on Howe Avenue or Tupelo at 56th & H. Unfortunately, I cannot make any of the times posted.
Is anybody interested in early morning write-ins? Maybe Tuesday mornings about 7:30ish at Tupelo?
Monday and Tuesday nights also work well for me if anybody is interested in an East Sac location for a write-in on those nights.
For wine drinkers, who do not need wi-fi, I would suggest Sellands at El Dorado and H Streets.

As an FYI, there's a knitting group that meets at Tupelo's on Thursdays at... 7:30pm. I'm not sure how big of a group they normally are (or how big we normally are), but I just wanted y'all to be aware that we'll be competing with the normal clientele plus the crafters for table space. (The knitters fortunately don't need power outlets. ;-) )

Hey, I'd be up for a morning write-in ... maybe not 7:30 :P but 8-ish or so. Monday and Tuesday evenings in East Sac also tentatively work for me--it's just a matter of if I've got something else going on ... but who here really makes other plans during November?

Last year we stayed to about 9pm to 10pm, depending on our word counts and our brain matter ( or how our day had been going). I'm guessing I'll be there at least until nine each time. Need to get stuff done :)
