[STICKY] The All-Ireland Word War (Rules & Sign-ups)

For the past couple of years, we've run an All-Ireland Word War, which pits province against province (plus Dublin as its own group because there's so many of them).

And despite the fact that Onyva has helped Connaught to a storming win both times, we're going to have another go this year at boosting people's word counts with a bit of healthy and friendly competition - and perhaps this year another group can win... (Well, we can dream.)

The rules are pretty simple - in fact, even simpler this year than in the past.

To take part, reply to this topic or send me a NaNoMail declaring your interest and stating which group (Connaught, Leinster, Munster, Ulster or Dublin) you want your word count to contribute to. You don't have to sign up for the province you live in; it can be the one you're originally from. But you'd probably want to have some sort of connection, else why bother?
Unlike in previous years, the cut-off date for sign-ups isn't till 10pm GMT on November 23rd (it's been more like the 5th before).

During November, update your word count at least every other day. Anyone who doesn't update for more than 4 days on the trot, or else warn me that they won't be updating, gets dropped from their group.

I'll log everyone's word counts every 2 days, starting on the 6th - usually about 10pm. I'll then do some quick maths (or get my spreadsheet to do it) and post up the averages for each group (i.e. total word count divided by number of signed-up participants).
In the last week - from the 24th onwards - I'll take word counts every day.

ADDED 20/11: The cut-off for voluntary drop-outs is 10pm GMT on November 26th. Likewise, I will stop dropping people after that date - in other words, if you're still in on my Nov 26th leader board update, you're in till the end.

The winning group is the one with the highest average word count by midnight on November 30th. An honourable mention also goes to the group with the highest percentage of people reaching 50K or more. And of course, we cheer everyone who passes the 50K post as it happens!

Also in the past, we've had separate topics/threads for sign-ups, results and chat, all of which have been locked after a certain point except for the chat one. But this year I can't be bothered with all that, although the leader board will have its own topic - have your say wherever you please! :)
It's December: what next?

Anyone still alive and awake out there?

I always get a post-NaNo slump, but it thankfully hasn't lasted too long this time (I was already scribbling scenes and characters onto index cards last night for the novel I want to get finished (not this year's)).

What are you all doing - if anything? - to carry on November's momentum? Is anyone going to finish their novel this month (NaNoFiMo)? Or edit it in March (NaNoEdMo)? Or even take up the CreateSpace offer to get ther novel printed?

(And there are going to be limited edition Winners' T-shirts available on Dec 12th - watch this space.)

Check out the I Wrote a Novel, Now What? page anyway for ideas and inspiration. Just because November is over doesn't mean it all has to end here...

Hi,

Thought I'd start a new thread for posting when updates have taken place as it's easier to just cross-post across all the participating forums.

The results from the 4th November have been calculated and can be found here:

If anyone sees any mistakes (and there were several in the last one) please PM me to let me know. :)
Donations

This topic is mostly so I can log what I've collected in cash so far in the donations jar I'm taking to meetings.

But it's also a reminder to donate something if you're able to do so (or have a look at Donating When Broke if you're not).

The minimum donation via the Donations part of the store is $10 - that's about £6.65 at the moment, and you'll get a nice online halo for that. Larger donations get you goodies as well.
Or if you buy something from the store, the Office of Letters & Light (the guys who run NaNoWriMo) also get a cut of that. (I've put in one order already and shall be doing another if people are interested, to share out the shipping costs - http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3023224.)

Alternatively, if you're coming to meetings, I'll be toting round the donations jar from now on. Please do contribute, even if it's only a pound! (And I'll be logging how much goes in and keeping a note of names too, for thank yous.) I'll be making the donation by PayPal later this month in the name of 'Northern Ireland writers' or some such - you won't of course get an individual halo for adding to the jar, but I will make sure that the donation counts for the Northern Ireland region.

Also, there will be an incentive for donating - last year I put the names of everyone who had into a pot and the person whose name I pulled out got a copy of the official NaNoWriMo poster. This year's prize will probably be a poster (the yellow-ish coloured one which is also a donation goodie), but if I don't get my copy of that, it will be another piece of official merchandise.

-----------
Collected Monday 17th: £16
The All-Ireland Word War - Final Results

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Word War and reached 50k; commiserations but well done anyway to anyone who wrote anything at all.
Everyone who was still in the WW at the end (except for one person) made their 50k - even people who were so far behind for a while that I never expected them to! In addition, a total of four people who'd been dropped out of the WW also reached their 50k (and far beyond, in a couple of cases).

Here are the various results...

Average Word Counts - Finishers
[Taken as an average over all participants for a region who 'finished' the WW, whether or not they reached 50k.]

Connacht: (3 participants): 73,348

Dublin: (15 participants): 61,645

Munster: (8 participants): 57,897

Ulster: (13 participants): 56,083

Leinster: (7 participants): 51,630

Overall (46 participants): 58,600
---

Average Word Counts - All
[Taken as an average over all WW participants for a region.]

Munster: (10 participants): 49,726

Dublin: (20 participants): 48,739

Leinster: (11 participants): 42,209

Ulster: (26 participants): 38,779

Connacht: (7 participants): 38,290

Overall (74 participants): 43,414
---

% of 50k Winners
[Taken as an average over all WW participants for a region, and counts 50k winners even if they were dropped out of the WW.]

Munster: (10 participants; 8 winners): 80%

Leinster: (11 participants, 8 winners): 72.73%

Dublin: (20 participants; 14 winners): 70%

Ulster: (26 participants, 16 winners): 61.54%

Connacht: (7 participants, 3 winners): 42.86%

Overall (74 participants, 49 winners): 66.22%
---

Exceptional Word Counts

Connacht: Onvya - 119,123

---

Skin-of-the-Teeth Winners
These are people who deserve a special mention for putting in huge efforts on their last day in order to reach 50k (these are approximate values):
- paperdollx (Ulster) - 9k
- AetherLev (Munster) - 7.5k
50k Winners in Ireland

I'm sure you all know by now that I like fiddling with statistics.

So here's the graph I've been watching all month:

The number of people shown for each region includes only those that who
a) have set home to there
b) actually posted any sort of word count.
It's not the total number of people with their home set to that region (that's quite hard to find except by working through an Author Search of everyone homed to Ireland, and then figuring who belongs to which region - the search isn't particularly refined/refinable).

I've also worked my way through the Winners page - at least, the section of it that has home region set to Ireland - and counted up the winners for each region. (I know. I need a life.)

And based on these figures, these are the percentages of winners. It's hard to know how high above world averages they are for individual regions (see above about problems finding out how many homed to a particularl Ireland region), but they're good anyway.

NorthWest: 3 winners out of 5 = 60%
Dublin: 28 out of 52 = 53.85%
Elsewhere: 30 out of 71 = 42.45%
Northern Ireland: 19 out of 51 = 37.25%

I can however say that with a total of 260 writers homed to an Ireland region this year, and with 80 winners in Ireland...
30.77% of Irish WriMos made it past 50k.
That's WELL over the world average - YAY US!
(Those of you who don't have a home region set, I don't think it's too late to influence these statistics by setting it... Go to My NaNoWriMo > My Regions > Home Region tab).

.... and now back to work for me.
We dare you....

Last year, we dared people to include pumpkins in their novels, and quite a lot of people managed it.

This year, we were pondering in the chat room when we realised it has is an excellent ninja emoticon. But ninjas as part of NaNoWriMo are just /so/ overdone...
So how about including ninjas, pirates, robots /and/ monkeys in your novel?!

You don't have to have /actual/ ninjas/pirates/robots/monkeys (although Frosthearted reckons she can manage that) - you could have a child's toy or a Halloween costume; alternatively, use them in a nice metaphor or bit of imagery ('he strode across the room like a pirate captain on the deck of his ship').

Go on, have a go at using at least one of them in your novel somewhere. Bonus points for all four!

And post your efforts here... :)

Derry TGIO

We're nearly at the end of the month, so we need to think about a TGIO - aka a last supper. :)

Everyone's welcome whether or not you've reached 50k or have been to another meeting; friends and family and supporters are also welcome!

I'll suggest that we keep to our Fridays and go for December 5th - any suggestions on venue? We could go for tapas at Café Calm, or try the new sushi bar on Great James Street...
Anyone here doing NaNoFiMo or NaNoEdMo ?

I've validated my novel but it's not over for me - actually, I feel like I just wrote half of my novel ^^; I want to keep working on it in december, but with less pressure (800 or 900 words a day instead of the 1667, for instance ?). I need to devote some more time for college assignments. I also need to catch up on exercise, my social life and most of all - reading !

Has anyone else done NaNoFiMo or NaNoEdMo ? How does it take place ? How different is it from NaNoWriMo ?

----------
We need... a logo!

An awful lot of other regions round the world have their own special identities - NaperWriMo for Naperville in the US, or EdMoWriMo for Edmonton, for example.

Now that we have our own region, we have the perfect name...

NINoWriMo

That's -
N I No Wri Mo
 - all strung together, of course (just in case it's not obvious or clear from the font).

So, my challenge to all you artistic people out there (and I know there are some) is to design an appropriate logo for us.

Something with a tag line (November novelling in Northern Ireland, or something like that) would be nice. And the idea is that the logo can be used on our own merchandise (sold to make money for NaNoWriMo, of course) as well as on any press releases and other material (progress trackers) produced by your ML(s).

You can email it to me or else put it online somewhere and link back to it in a reply (if you know how to use the <img> tag).

Belfast TGIO

Yep, the month is nearly over already, and we had our last Undaground meeting this evening....

Which means that it's time to plan a Thank God It's Over bash!

I'd like to suggest the Botanic Inn next Monday (December 1st) at 6:30pm - it does decent and reasonably priced food for those of us who want a meal and obviously drinks for those who don't.

Everyone is welcome, whether you've reached 50k or not; whether you've been to another meeting or have been holed up in your room for the month. And please do bring your family and friends and supporters along - this is a chance to celebrate the fact that it's all over for another year!

No need to RSVP (although I'd like to know that /someone/ apart from me will be there), but please make sure to bring at least the first lines of your novel for game-playing purposes... And bring along a bit more too, if you fancy reading some out to us (which is not compulsary).
Validating your novel

As you should all know by now, the official word count validator is now available - go to My NaNoWriMo > Edit Novel Info, and paste your novel into the box to get your official certificate and turn your word count a nice shade of purple!

You can keep adding words after validating; either manually in that nice box at the top, or by pasting your novel through the validator again.

Validation ends at 11:59pm on Sunday November 30th - remember to set your time zone correctly (My NaNoWriMo > Edit User Settings).

But what, I hear you cry, if I hand-wrote my entire novel? Or what if I hand-wrote parts and haven't typed them up yet and don't think I'll have time to do so?
Well, all is not lost. Count up your handwritten words (which will take a while, admittedly) or even better, get someone else to do it for you.
Then go to a random text generator such as the one on http://www.lipsum.com/ (Lorem Ipsum's home page), and generate the correct number of random words. Save these into a file which you can then paste into the validator.
And Bob's your uncle - one winner's certificate, congratulations!
Belfast Meetings - general

Anyone up for a kick-off and other meetings in Belfast this year?

Generally, the kick-off takes place the week before NaNoWriMo starts. It's a chance to meet some of the other people who are going to be partaking of the insanity and to just chat about what and how and why. The meetings - aiming for weekly ones - are both a chance to socialise and talk about NNWM, and also to do some writing (laptop/Alphasmart/pen&paper).

My best evenings during November for meetings will be Monday and Wednesday, although the Monday one is possibly mutable (Weds isn't, due to another NNWM committment) - it's really down to which two days that week I work in Belfast. Anyone got any preferences?

As for a place, I don't really have one in mind. Last year we met in the back room of Common Grounds, but that wasn't really ideal (it's a charity, they wanted donations for use of the room - however, NNWM is of course a charity in its own right!). We really need a largish cafe that's open till at least 8 or 9, with comfy seats and space for people to gather round.
There's a potential one near where I work (Undaground on Dublin Road) - although its chairs aren't that great, it's convenient both to bus routes and the city centre, and they're open till 11 (and have decent coffee and other food).
Other suggestions are very welcome though. I also considered the cafe in Belfast Central Library because, you know, the whole book connection - anyone know anything about it?

Bear in mind that even if you can't make the write-ins and meetings organised by me, you're very very very welcome to organise your own - just let me know so I can add them to the calendar!
Online chat and word sprints

There's a chat room in existence for the use of all WriMos in Ireland.

You do need to register (for the chat room, not for the website unless you want to post comments on the site), but it's relatively painless.

There's also a timer which can be used for word sprints - for example, set it to 10 minutes and see how much you can write! You can have word wars with other chat room occupants using this timer too (although nothing is automated, alas).

I'll personally be in the chat room every evening when I'm home (and weekend days too) if anyone has any pressing questions (and the site's playing up), and to take part in general chat and word sprints as well!
Bulk-order of official merchandise - anyone want anything?

The international shipping costs for stuff from the official NNWM store are pretty horrendous (something like $17 per order).

However, I am definitely putting in an order (because MLs can get the one of the posters for 1c + shipping, and I want to use it as a raffle prize, like last year). So, if anyone wants me to order anything for them (T-shirts, mugs, etc), I'm happy to do so, and split the shipping costs between all of us.
I can then either give you the item if I'm going to see you at meets, or post it on via Royal Mail (which I will charge you for, but a T-shirt would be about £1.25). Obviously the total cost of shipping will depend on how many people join in the order.
I'll accept cash, cheques or Paypal, based on whatever exchange rate I get on the day of ordering on my own Paypal account.

If anyone's interested, please NaNoMail or email me, to let me know what item you want, how you want to pay, and how you want to get it from me.

I'll be sending off the order on October 24th, so you've got just under 2 weeks to decide.
Mid-month meet-up

We're exceedingly lucky this year that November has five weekends (yep, count 'em, five): one at the beginning, one at the end, and one (obviously) right in the middle.

So, who's up for meeting on the afternoon of either Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th, in Belfast - probably in Roast on Royal Avenue?
I'll be driving up, so can give lifts from the Strabane/Derry area and points en route (Dungiven and so on).

It would be our first all-NI meeting ever...
Meetings in Derry

There seem to be quite a lot of new WriMos in Derry this year, which from my point of view (and Larys' too, I suspect) is very good news!

So, I'd like to organise a kick-off event and some weekly meetings for our area... Generally, the kick-off takes place the week before NaNoWriMo starts. It's a chance to meet some of the other people who are going to be partaking of the insanity and to just chat about what and how and why. The meetings are both a chance to socialise and talk about NNWM, and also to do some writing (laptop/Alphasmart/pen&paper).

Last year we just met one evening a week in Costa Coffee in Foyleside, which had the advantages of being convenient, generally not too busy, with decent coffee and very comfy chairs. But there's nothing wrong with a change of venue - if anyone's got any suggestions for somewhere comfortable and open fairly late, speak up!

What days and times work for people? I can make any of the 5 days a week that I'm not in Belfast, but would prefer weekday evenings or any time of weekends.
Queen's University NaNoWriMo sessions

Last year, the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen's University hosted weekly lunchtime sessions for NaNovellists. They were run by writer-in-residence Ian Sansom and were pretty well attended, mostly by students of the creative writing MA.

I'm pleased to report that they're happening again this year, starting on Wednesday 5th November at 1pm, and running every week during November.

Can't keep up. Feeling despondent and useless even though sitting on a respectable word count but finding other work commitments too pressing to play with you lot. I'll have to take a rain check. Good luck Ulster.

Anyone up for the UK & Ireland Word War?

The subject line basically says it all. :)

For the past couple of years, there's been a Word War between regions in Ireland and the UK (run by someone over in England) - though this has nothing to do with the All-Ireland Word War (run by me, of which more later).
Basically, you sign up for your word count to be counted in your region's total; an average for each region is taken, and a leader board kept up throughout November.
There will be separate 'teams' for the different Ireland regions - Dublin, Elsewhere, Northwest and NI .

Sign-ups aren't happening yet, but Loriba (the organiser) has asked me to sound out if anyone's interested in taking part. If you are, please reply here. You don't have to do anything except update your word count regularly during the month, and hopefully clock up a big one!

[This topic is cross-posted to all the Ireland regions.]
NINoWriMo on the radio

I'll be featuring on Radio Ulster's morning news programme tomorrow at around 8:50 (slotted in between all the American election stuff, no doubt)!

However, just in case something goes nastily wrong and I can't get to Belfast or can't get a mobile signal by then, is anyone prepared to be my back-up? It would mean being interviewed by Robbie Meredith about NaNoWriMo: you'd need to know some facts and figures (which I can supply in advance) and preferably have done NaNo at least once before. And you'd need to be available at 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Email or NaNoMail me asap... Cheers.
Top Tips from those in the know

There's quite a few veteran WriMos in this region, with probably a hundred years or more of NaNo experience between us!

So come on guys - share some wisdom. What are your top tips for surviving (and completing) NaNoWriMo?

Mine is definitely to write every day, even if it's only 10 or 50 or 100 words. It keeps the momentum going, and it's good to see them mount up - and if you get to, say, 9700, it's very tempting to write just another 300 to hit the next big step!
