The subject line basically says it all. :)
For the past couple of years, there's been a Word War between regions in Ireland and the UK (run by someone over in England) - though this has nothing to do with the All-Ireland Word War (run by me, of which more later).
Basically, you sign up for your word count to be counted in your region's total; an average for each region is taken, and a leader board kept up throughout November.
There will be separate 'teams' for the different Ireland regions - Dublin, Elsewhere, Northwest and NI .
Sign-ups aren't happening yet, but Loriba (the organiser) has asked me to sound out if anyone's interested in taking part. If you are, please reply here. You don't have to do anything except update your word count regularly during the month, and hopefully clock up a big one!

I'm interested . . . Is it done by average words posted or total word count?

Yep, an average is taken - the total word count for that region's participants divided by the number of participants in the region.
For reference, although I can't remember how we did in 2006, last year we came in about 6th or 7th out of 14 regions (12 of which were in England; the others were us and Scotland which was also just one region last year).
Anyway, once the region is committed to doing the word war, we'll get more information about how and when it's counted and calculated.

Hmmm, tricky as I am British living in the Republic. I'd better sit on the fence, as usual!

Deccy, you can sign up for that word war on OUR side, no fence-sitting! Technically, you can pick your region by where you *live*, or where you're *from*, or well anywhere you like I suppose.
Boo-hissing the other regions isn't personal (for most of us), it's just part of the fun. Spiritwolf and I have a very English friend that we're trying to drag into the festivities this year, so perhaps that's where the above outburst came from? Last year our friend managed SIX HUNDRED words of the novel she's been meaning to write and missed every write-in between the KO and TGIO parties. Who knows, maybe this year we can get six hundred more out of her.
So pick a side and sharpen the pencils! I mean, pick OUR side and sharpen the pencils!!

Why not? I am already signed up for the Irish regional one. Will this be a problem?

Looks like we've got enough people to definitely field teams for the 4 regions!
I've let the organiser Loriba know, so you can all stop posting here now - the official sign-up thread will appearing in your own region sometime soon.

Farfalla, Dublin doesn't have any MLs this year, so far - before you ask, I can barely keep my head above water with other commitments as it is, just now, so sorry, no - but is there information that the MLs get for passing on to their members? Can we operate with an ML? Is ther an overall Irish ML? Would appreciate any help / advice available!

Bah to there being no Dublin MLs yet this year. I hope you can find someone down there... (Else you won't get your goodies.)
But in the meantime, don't worry about the UK&Ireland Word War - I seem to be the (admittedly self-appointed) liaison for most of Ireland for that (Onyva can mind her own region), so I'll make sure that you get any necessary info. A regional ML isn't mandatory for this at least, as far as I know.
In terms of other stuff - no, apart from the goodies, MLs don't get anything special from HQ to pass onto everyone else. So Dublin won't be missing out even if you don't get anyone volunteering.

I was wondering more about information, etc.
And what does the ML do (apart from encouraging / cracking the whip)?
