Last year, the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen's University hosted weekly lunchtime sessions for NaNovellists. They were run by writer-in-residence Ian Sansom and were pretty well attended, mostly by students of the creative writing MA.
I'm pleased to report that they're happening again this year, starting on Wednesday 5th November at 1pm, and running every week during November.
See http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SeamusHeaneyCentreforPoetry/AutumnEvents200... for more details.

I had to ask Ian Samson in person after the Booker prize debate. They don't seem to be going out of their way to publicise it.
:-(
Which reminds me - someone whould plug NaNoWriMo on Studio NI:

I got in contact with the SHC myself this year, rather than wait on anyone letting me know...
I'll be going along to at least the first one, to give a bit of a blurb, like last year. Hope to see some of you there, anyway!
And yeah, I know. Will write a thing for Studio NI tonight, I promise. :)

If you didn't come to the session at Queen's today, but can possibly make it to another one... DO! (Even if it means it'll get even more squashed in that room.)
Ian Sansom, the BBC writer-in-residence is in charge and today took us through the reasons why he thinks NaNoWriMo is a great idea, and also through how to get round what he calls 'specious barriers' - the things that seem to stop us writing but really shouldn't.
All highly interesting and entertaining stuff!

I summed up Ian's lecture at the bottom of the post here:

Now, back to the novel ...

For anyone who's interested, I'll be the author under fire at tomorrow's session (assuming I can find somewhere to park around Queen's). It'll be my first ever such event as a published author, so please be gentle with me. And don't mention the fact that my NaNoWriMo is going very poorly. :(

Oooooh.... (Try University Street for parking. Or Claremount Street or the one parallel to it, on the other side of University Road. Used to work for me last year - alternatively, the Dublin Road multi-storey is a 10 min walk, that's where I'm coming from this year!)
I'll try and be gentle, I promise. No heckling. I'll even give you an official sticker. :)

A belated thanks to Stuart for yesterday's session at Queen's - he had a lot of interesting things to say (even if I personally ended up green with envy), and I hope it was good practice for all the promotional work he'll need to be doing next summer!
I have no idea who's coming to speak to us next week, but Ian Sansom will be talking about characterisation (he covered plot this week, in about 10 mins flat - v impressive).
