Where will these show, as I cant find any, and I just uploaded one.

Will these filter their way onto the site once nano is started, and basically only appear when it is certian they wont cause any problems slowing down the website?

Did you click submit after you uploaded your cover art?

Once it is successfully uploaded and submitted, it will show on the Novel Info tab of your profile. I have seen some very interesting cover art already. It's a pretty awesome feature!

I guess therein lied the problem. Mine is fair simply. though the scanner did some weird things to it. I also reversed the image. it is only in black and white, but thats because I know little about graphic designing from a pre drawn and scanned image.

I'm not sure I understand (it's early and I haven't had enough coffee yet). Your image is there on your novel info page. Is it not what you wanted?

I was wondering where people are getting their book covers from. Are they self-created? If so, what programs work well for this sort of thing? I'm using a Mac this year so I'd especially be interested in any mac-friendly programs, thank you!

I created mine using free clip art images that I cobbled together in MS-Paint. I'm sure that other folks have better tools than that. You could use digital photographs you take or clip art or scanned drawings.... or really anything that you have rights to use. Remember that images on the internet are not necessarily free for you to use due to copyrights.

Here's a good thread in Helpful Sites & Orgs of places you can find artwork that's cleared for use in this manner.

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3001316

There are some easy to use websites that let you put in a photo and it can do some text on it for your novel title and tagline, etc.

If you find anything else helpful out there, feel free to add it to that list to help out others.

Check the All Ages Coffeehouse forum... I believe there are some volunteers who are offering to make some covers for people, if you ask nicely. :)
