Sooo... I'm not sure if we have an ML this year, but I know I'm not the only NaNo-er in Chapel Hill! I'm just curious to know -- who else is out there? Shall we have an introductions thread?

I'm Meredith, a Library Science grad student at UNC. This is my third year NaNoing; I succeeded in both '06 and '07, and the story I'll be working on this year is a sequel to the one I did in '06. I tend to gravitate toward writing things that stretch my imagination -- last year, I ran with an idea about pirates in a dystopian future after an oil crisis. The series I'm coming back to involves shapeshifters.

So -- hi all!

Hey!
I'm a high schooler at Carrboro High. This is my third year as well and I'm basically trying to rewrite John Green's Looking for Alaska... except different and with less awesome.

yaaay for Chapel Hill!
As for an ML, I haven't heard anything yet.

I'm Charlotte. I'm a freshman at UNC and this is my second year doing NaNoWriMo. I lost last year, but I've made a lot of changes in my plans this year. I'm writing a novel about toy makers set in a Steampunk influenced world. I'm really looking forward to November and meeting all of the Chapel Hill NaNoers.

I keep waiting to hear about meet-ups from the ML, but we haven't gotten an email from her in a long time.

I know Dancinkare (last year's ML) sent out an email asking for someone to volunteer a while back, but I don't know if anyone stepped up...?

Oooh, ismene, I love Steampunk stuff :) Steampunk + toymakers sounds like a really fun November!

Hey all! I'm Celeste, also a library science grad student at UNC. (Meredith-- you're not the Meredith in my storytelling class by any chance, are you?) This is my second year here in wonderful Nanoland and hopefully my second win. I write fantasy, mostly; '07 was a sort of western/steampunk-inspired fantasy novel (Ismene: *g*), this year it's a superhero novel. I'm really looking forward to getting started! Need to do some more planning, though...

Didn't we get an email from the ML a few weeks back asking for volunteers/a replacement ML? I seem to remember that...

ETA: I just checked the ML list, and someone named silly_pierre is listed as our ML?

I am one and the same! *high fives* Yay! We can have weekly Thursday night NaNo check-in/panic together :)
All you awesome people and your steampunk-ness... want to read them all!

Yeah, I remember that email from Dancinkare -- didn't know if anyone had picked up on it, though. Guess we just get some suspense :D

Yay! Awesome! It'll be nice having someone to talk (*cough*flailinpanic*cough*) to about it this year.

If the ML doesn't end up showing up, I would be willing to at least try and organize the weekly get-togethers; I just didn't want to volunteer for actual ML-ship since I'm new to the area. But hopefully it won't come to that!

I remember Caribou was a popular write-in spot last year because there's plenty of seating, plenty of electrical outlets, and plenty of caffeine :D

It is a small internet world in that case.

I'm really looking forward to starting. I've got everything planned out, and I'm looking forward to meeting y'all. It is exciting to say 'Steampunk' and have someone know what it is.

Hi Vincent!
Wow... being explosively pretentious sounds quite dangerous :)

I'm looking forward to meeting y'all (the y'all that consists of the y'all I don't already know :D) as well. I'll see if I can get my roommate to come out of the woodwork, too -- she's another library school student. We're a serious NaNoing faction, apparently :D

Hi, I'm Sarah. At the moment I'm just a cashier at a grocery store (and am trying to figure out what sort of degree I want, something related to history since that Library Science degree didn't work out too well at ECU). This will be my second year NaNoing, last year I didn't succeed, but I'm feeling much better about this year. I'll be working on a paranormal (vampires/half-vampires/etc) romance with lots of action set in an alternate reality of early 17th century England where magic and vampires, while not normal, are there. I definitely think that I'll be able to come to the meetings if they're at the Caribou coffee place.

It sounds like everyone has really interesting stories. This should be a lot of fun. :)

Hey, folks!

My name is Whitney and I'm a sophomore undergraduate studying Journalism and Environmental Studies. You have no idea how many times I've attempted to do NaNoWriMo and every time I've failed. I'm going to be optimistic and say that this year will be different!

I really have no idea what I'm going to write, though, so that might make the not giving up a little harder than usual.

Karen DID send out an email about needing a replacement ML. I would totally jump on that if I didn't have my plate full enough as it is.

Good luck, all!
Whit

I'd also be tempted to take the ML position but unfortunately I don't think I'm qualified to really lead a group (get distracted easily and I didn't win last year XD). Hopefully we'll figure something out though.

I emailed Karen and she said she had indeed found someone to be ML, and she would look into what was going on.

I second the vote for meeting at Caribou coffee. Maybe Panera occasionally as well; they're just down the street. Is it too early to start a meet-up thread?

Hey Everyone!

It's Karen!!!! Woooooooot!

Okay, first of all I am SO TOTALLY FLATTERED that you all remember me :) Because I think you're awesome.

That being said...I am not MLing this year. Mostly because of my personal time commitments, but also because I'd love to see you all step up to the plate and start planning your own write-ins and kick-off parties and competitions and everything else. (however, i'll probably still be throwing up some "I'm going to be _______ at ______, come write with me). But that's something you ALL can do!!) And of course, the new MLs will be doing that as well. You should be hearing more from them soon :)

As far as me....HI! I'm Karen, I"m a junior at UNC (journalism and drama majors and creative writing minor). I do a zillion things with my life...on campus - Interactive Theatre Carolina, Sababa, NC Hillel, and Blank Canvas.....and off campus, I am the Chapter Coordinator for the Harry Potter Alliance.

This will be my fourth year doing Nano....(geez). I MLed for Chapel Hill for 2006 and 2007 (YAY For region creation!) and am so excited and thrilled at how much it has grown. Y'all rock !

Wow. Things do sound very busy for you Karen, no wonder you want a break! Hopefully we'll all figure a good time to meet-up for write-ins and stuff. Sounds like this year will be fun. :)

Hey! I'm Kate and this will be my third year of NaNoWriMo. I'm a little nervous about this year, as all the schoolwork's building up, but I'm still going to try!
I really need to go outline now (it's not even November and I'm already procrastinating).

Hey everyone!

I'm Lori, and this is my first official year of doing Nano. I just graduated from UNC in May (English major, creative writing minor), and now I work in in Durham. I always wanted to do Nano, but as you all know, November is just a horrible month for college students, and I could never find the time. I did my own private Nano in July '07, and did succeed, but I realized when I had about 49,000 words that pretty much nothing had happened in my novel....needless to say, I haven't looked at that disaster since then, and I'm actually trying to plot a little in advance this year (shock).

I'm totally down for writing meet ups/panic attacks, so I'm jumping over to that thread now!

Hey Lori! :)

School definitely got in the way last year for me, and I agree, plotting in advance is great. Definitely doing that this year.

i'm anya, this is my second year of NaNo. I'll be writing Jenna this year, and i'm both petrified and exhilerated. I just hope i can do the story justice.
it's a fantasy novel presented in archetypes. i'll explain later.
you won't see me irl ever, because my parents are paranoid. I'm a freshie at CHHS, and I'm hoping to win again this year.

Hey Anya. Sounds like a really interesting novel. Hopefully you'll be putting up excerpts. :)

It's better that your parents are paranoid than not being paranoid at all. At least there's the Internet for discussion.

Hey y'all,

Just a question for all the folks in high school (or at least with parents like Anya's -- my Mom was like that, too, so I know how that goes!). Since I'm in library school, I think of stuff from this angle: I don't know if any of your librarians would be amenable to it, but it might be worth asking if they'd let you have a write-in or two at the school some afternoon for just you guys (so your parents might not have to be so paranoid about you participating in a little NaNo socialization). If that sounds interesting, it might be worth talking to your local librarian about.
