There is no automatic linkage or anything from the site to your computer, you have to do it yourself.

Throughout the month you can manually update your word count using the little box at the top, right-hand side of the screen. Right now it is locked down because it isn't November yet. You would type in your new word count (provided for you by your word processor or by you manually counting every word) and click update and then it will be stored for you and your graphs will update, etc. This is completely the honor system so if you put in that youv'e got 100,000 words, we believe you. But you won't get a winner's certificate this way.

Starting on or about the 25th of November you will be able to validate and win using the copy/paste word counter on your profile page. This "official" word count validation feature is a copy/paste effort where you will copy the entire text of your novel from within your word processor and paste it into the appropriate field in your Edit Novel Info page of your profile. Note that it does not matter which word processor you use.

If it is as it has been in the past, prior to November 25th you can also use the copy/paste method to have the system validate your word counts for you. It just will not call the numbers "official" until that part of the system is enabled on or about the 25th.

Moving this to the tech help forum...

Incidentally, here it is in the FAQ: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1044627

there's a mistake, though. The validator is on the THIRD tab (Novel Info).
