Home-away-from-home for all my Anti's from Gaia. However, if you're noveling this November and happen to have some pent up antagonism towards a certain set of popular vampire novels, feel free to join in the fun. Hell, even if you're in favor of said novels, we're always up for some friendly discussion.
Let's kick some ass, Anti's! -Minari

Can I be anti-Twilight if I could only get through the first sixty pages of the first book? As in, I never even reached a point where you encountered sunshine-sparkly vampires.
I do wonder if the book was ever, at any time, graced with editing. Something about a sun shining "greenly" and vampires in "vaguely designer" clothing just left me with a sense that was I was reading was a first draft, essentially pounded out in a stream of consciousness state.
And thank you to whoever it was who came up with the idea to approach it as essentially a bad piece of fanfiction. That's the approach I'll take if I decide to make another try at this turkey.

I didn't even get halfway through the first novel, but through reading about it online, I can say that I definitely dislike the Twilight series. There just doesn't seem to be anything remarkable about it; nothing that appeals to me, at ALL, whether it be plot, characters, writing style, etc.

Unfortunately, the Twilight Series is SMeyer's dreams in unedited, published form.
That's about what I thought until saw this, earlier today...
I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published.
From her blog entry: Midnight Sun: Edward's Version of Twilight
Go figure, but she's claiming this series, errm, excuse me SAGA (to use Meyer's own words, see that blog entry) is in fact "edited." Assuming she's not fibbing I can't but shudder to think of what the manuscript looked like before editing...the mind reels.

I believe she self-edits, because I was hearing, amongst all the Breaking Dawn outrage, that they could tell where SMeyer had stopped editing because the MS was due and she had stopped for a while to work on The Host. Self-Editing only goes so far. A professional editor never touched her work. I feel like something isn't really edited - in the professional business - until it's been vetted by people who get paid to go through and look for obvious mechanical/continuity mistakes and make the story as polished as possible. SMeyer didn't come close.
----------One of my professors said that writer's need an outside opinion because the author is so emotionally attached to what he/she has written. The author can easily glaze over mistakes in the writing.
I'd love to see these books go through a workshop.

Wow so I have a funny story. I was visiting some relatives for the first time in a while this weekend, and one of my cousins remembered that I like reading.
Cousin: "So have you read Twilight?"
*I try to keep my expression under control* "Yep."
Cousin: "What do you think of it?"
*Again, I have problems with my expression and try to control it*
*she notices*
Cousin: "YOU DON'T LIKE IT????"
Me: "Nope. Not my thing."
Cousin: "ITS SO GOOD! EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IT!"
Other cousin: "What's it about?"
*cousin grimaces, I crack up*
Cousin: "If I told you, you wouldn't want to read it."
Other cousin: "Well, I don't want to read it now."
Cousin: "Well, um, it's about this girl, and...this boy. And....he's a vampire."
Of course, she lost them all after that. ;)

Meyer self-edits. Or at least that's what I'm assuming. Everything is too bogged down with her flowerly language that it just detracts from the story--or lack there of. She's humped that thesaurus too much since it's chained to her desk.
@Essence: I agree. That pretty much is what Twilight is. And man, the thought of these books before editing is disturbing.

I'll join! Twilight (and I've read the ENTIRE series, *shudder*) is one of the worst written series I've read in a while. It's not even terribly written, it's terribly conceived! I think the reason that Meyer doesn't have an editor is because any good editor would force her to find another plot that's not a validation of an abusive relationship.

To summarize something Nora Roberts said on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, iirc, when an author is selling like hotcakes, the editor doesn't edit, they just tell you that what you sent them was beautiful.

Ooo...what a great thread!
When I first read Twilight, there was only one thing I could do: laugh. With lines like "As I had just that once before, I smelled his cool breath in my face. Sweet, delicious, the scent made my mouth water", how can people both read and keep a straight face?
I was hoping by Eclipse Edward would totally loose control and devour Bella, but judging by summaries and reviews I read, he unfortunately didn't. Although a baby who wants blood is pretty cool. Sounds like one long crackfic.
My story this year was sort on inverse-inspired by Twilight. I wanted to write a book with non-sexy, sparkly vampires, where the moral issues at hand were better explored.
Although I can't exactly insult SMeyer as a person, because judging by the interviews I read, she more-or-less admits that she isn't writing works of great literary merit. She even says they are just for fun and have no deeper meaning whatsoever.
Bring on the debates!

That's completely sensible and almost too bad. You see, one author I truly love to hate is Terry Goodkind. Not only because his fantasy novels are beyond belief bad (Giant chickens-that aren't chickens-but are the ultimate embodiment of evil, etc.) but because he takes the junk he writes so seriously, too.

And yet, in other interviews, she acts like her books are God's gift to the world, and she seems to be unable to take criticism on them. Not that I'm dissing her as a person. I know I'd probably have almost the same issues if something I wrote was published. I imagine it's hard not to get vain about something like that.
Twilight still needs to burn though. It's so flowery that I felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing me while I attempted to read it. Seriously, who gives a crap about what Bella's car sounds like, or the fact that she exiled herself to an evidently uber rainy town. x[
