Hey everyone,
Let me get straight to the point, I need help....I want to create my own virtual world, does anyone know how I can do this? Ialso want to turn that world into a game, can anyone help?

Please be advised I am not made of money so the Maya program is out the window, does anyone have any other ideas? At the moment I don't even need it to be 3D if that helps.

And on another topic, can anyone tell me of a site where I can play virtual games and create my own avatar, or something like that?

Thanks for your time.

I think the closest thing to what you're asking would be Second Life; it's essentially an online sandbox.
If you wanted to create your own virtual world... well, I think you'd be looking at getting together a lot of venture capital, some geeks, and a lot of pizza.

No idea for the first thing, but as for the avatar, Second Life or Gaia would be your best bets, depending on what you like to do.

I would have to also say Second Life, as making your own virtual world from scratch is a humongous task that requires a lot of time, people, and dedication to the project (at least, if you want to get it done in a timely manner).

You could try "RPG Maker"

http://tkool.jp/products/rpgxp/eng/index.html

I'm not sure of it's online capabilities but a hack here and a hack there and I'm sure you work something out.

Check out www.metaplace.com. Metaplace allows you to create your own virtual world. They're in beta right now.

Little Big World is a new title that supports user generated content. Haven't played it yet, but have heard from people that the user content aspect is the most exciting element.

Three Ring's www.whirled.com is a site (currently in open beta) that allows users to upload graphics and games to share with other users. The non-artist can still create their own "whirled" by buying (with real money or game generated tokens) backdrops, furnishings, avatars, etc . . . (the users who created it earn tokens or money this way).

Creating a small scale game for something like Whirled would be a very good portfolio piece, and requires only Flash and Actionscript knowledge. You may even be able to meet programmers and artists in need of a writer/designer on the site, though my sense is that there are a lot of people who would like to write/design games and not nearly as many with the skills to program or provide graphics for them, so I would advise learning enough Flash to at least get your ideas going.

Not a virtual gamer ;) I'm a G4m3r4Lyf3!

but erm anyways,

You could also try either the Oblivion or NWN engines. Oblvion is very nice as it's just beautiful but NWN comes with a more DM style editor which I've played with some and it's pretty cool. Also, it's obviously set up to then play a game /me shrugs.

Otherwise your choices are really to get a good idea together, a programmer or two, a couple artists and a whole lot of venture capital.

Gamer for life, I'm guessing...

@ the OP, if you're serious about creating a virtual, multiplayer online space then I second the suggestions of Second Life and Metaplace, though Metaplace is currently a 2d solution, so if you want 3d it won't quite do that yet, as far as I know.

You could look at Multiverse, which is another open source game engine and toolset, though this is also far from complete.

Otherwise you have to spend money. There's a useful list of packages here: http://www.devmaster.net/wiki/MMORPG_Creation_Packages and a more comprehensive list of engines here: http://www.devmaster.net/engines/
