Hi all,
Not to take away from the general community but I decided after last year that the older Dayton Nanos needed a way to find each other since the census is skewed toward the college to mid-career types and I would step up and make it happen so far as it depended on me.
This is my second NaNo having won last year. This year will be even more chaotic on the personal side but I still have a shoulder and a spare crying towel for anyone who is melting down over time/plot/muses/family/the world at large/the Thanksgiving turkey and anything I've overlooked.
Cheers,
Morticia (Deb)

Hi All!
This is my First NaNo.
:faint:
And, yes, I am older, not mid- (or any) career and not college. No offense.
I've known about NaNoWriMo for several years, but, as I was otherwise engaged, and suffering from Lack Of Anything To Say, I thought it best to leave it to Real Writers. Then I thought, "what the hell", and I'm giving it a go.
God help me...
I'd love to get together, just to drink in/to all you'all's wisdom...whatever your age or career-ness in life. You still know a LOT more than me about this thing.
Here's to us. At least we're still trying.

Hey, don't sweat the first NaNo bit. Trust me it isn't nearly as painful as a first bike ride.
Now as for your location of "Dayton-ish" you will notice that most here are of the "-ish" persuasion. I did live in actual Dayton years ago, in the Five Oaks district, but lately I'm east of Dayton.
There is usually a launch party somewhere and that tends to be a nice and safe icebreaker. Walker will post it when the calendar goes live.
Look forward to meeting you.

Wow, and I was worried I might be the only one

I don't know anything about bridge either, but now you've got your fourth!!
I'm new at this, too, so those of you who have experience, be ready with the crying towel.
Glad to be a part of the over 50's and I've been looking for writers in the Dayton area for years! Thanks, Morticia for stepping forward - I'm sure good things will come from it.
Happy Trails,

Hi, and welcome!
Hey, with four there are lots of other options, like Scrabble.
I completely understand looking for writers in the Dayton area. We're here but we're usually engrossed in our writing.
Doing NaNo, regardless of getting to 50K will revolutionize the way you look at your writing and yourself as a writer.
Hope to see you at the launch party. Some of the over (near) 50s can't make it so we'll have to have a meet-up at another time to get everybody introduced.
Morticia,

I am Tim, and I just turned 50 this past summer, so I am definitely interested in this sub-group, as well as the main Dayton group. I do know how to play bridge, and am happy to teach anyone else who needs a break from writing come November.

Im in for the over 50's group..
I think it's a wonderful idea. I'm excited by writing another 50,000 words..
So has anyone decided on the exact When, where, what to bring etc?

Welcome Quest, Tim and Kai!
To answer the first question: Yes, we *wink* at 48's so come on in.
For the second question: A meet-up for the over50s seems to be a popular idea. However we seem to come from a wide area so if everybody would nanomail me your nearest major crossroad and three days/times between Nov 2-9, I'll see if I can find a compatible location and date.
Question three: What to bring will depend on the venue so we'll have to work that out later.
The next paragraph is to give everybody a heads up. That I am even considering NaNo this year is probably insane; let's just say that life is fairly unpredictable at this point and I have to be honest that reaching 50K myself might not be feasible. But I won't know until Nov 30th and neither will any of you so we'll just take it one day at a time.
Have a good week everybody.
Morticia

Hello Everyone- I turned 50 last spring and am celebrating all year by doing "50" things... like writing a 50,000 word novel. Yikes! What was I thinking!
I'm a newbie and haven't a clue what I'm doing, so I'm a wee bit nervous about it, but wanted to dip my toe in the pool of conversation :)

What a cool idea, 50 things for 50 years. Darn why didn't I think of that..
So anyway pull up a log and grab some hot cocoa and enjoy the conversation.

Hi all, I'm back!
Several tidbits here:
1) I buddied everybody on this thread; and I hope it makes it easier to group nanomail later.
2) It would help planning the 50+ get together if I could know; a) if you're going to the Launch on Saturday night and b) do you have a problem handling back to back events as a one-time occurrence?
3) Is it okay if the official part of our intro get together not be writing? Some have indicated time pressures and want to get to know people in the time they can be present.
Thanks

2.) I would like to be there but it depends on whether or not I need to pull "grandma duty" for one of my daughters.
3.) I'm good with a social get together with no writing. I can write at home, but I'm really excited to meet other writers!!
Thanks for your work on this, Morticia. I'm sure lots of us appreciate what you are doing here.

Hi, Morticia and boomers --
I'd love to meet with yall. I was undecided about going to the launch but if that's how you want to have our own meeting, then that will be fine. I like the idea of meeting to meet rather than meeting to write. I guess it won't be too hard to tell which bunch of people is ours ...
By way of introduction, I'm 57, a nurse, and have been doing NaNo since the early days. Now each year I'm trying to use new tools so that I'll soon feel confident enough to submit a full novel for publication. This year I'm going to try a romantic comedy, something totally different from my usual contemporary dramas and archaeological/paleontological science fiction. I wonder how it will feel to be in chuckles for a month. Better than it was for AugNoWriMO, when my characters had post traumatic stress disorder. That was tough writing and I made myself cry and get into a couple of anxiety wigflippings by being so involved with the characters.
I look forward to the opportunity to get to know yall and hear what you're doing.
Take care --

Hey guys,
Just dropping in to say howdy and offer some info.
- The kick off party is not a writing event. Writing tables will be available but it is a social event. From reading your thread I thought this might be a misconception by some. The clubhouse will be open starting at 1300 for anyone who does wish to write, the party starts at 1800.
- I'll add a space on the name tags for someone to write that they're wanting to join the over 50 crowd. That should make it slightly easier to find folks at the party. I just ask that you not completely ignore the young-uns at the party ;)
- Let me know anything I can do to help as the ML. If this really takes off as a sub group in the area, next year we can find someone to be a co-ML to help organize it.
See you at the party!

Hi all,
Despite all efforts to the contrary I seem to have created confusion so let me clear things.
Some over 50s cannot make it to the launch on Saturday. That is why the over 50s were contemplating a social gathering so soon so those who missed would get to meet at least some other over 50s.
Let me reassure everybody that the launch party is primarily a social event as Walker pointed out. Also it is rated G and even the teens and DASYs come to it (occasionally with a parent). It is a good time to get questions answered and get tips from experienced NaNos.
To be completely above board, and I will post this on the launch party thread too, I am doing double duty at Saturday's event as I write a column for the local paper and the location of the party is in my territory. Yes, I am bringing a camera too. Sorry, but a girl's got to make a living anyway she can; right? My deadlines are Tuesday nights so those are never available for me to attend write-ins or other NaNo events.
All of that said about why you should attend the Launch if you can, my first option for an over 50s social is Sunday Nov 2 around 3-ish at Panera on Far Hills near Dorothy. It's not perfectly central but easy access and less crowded than at the Greene.
You must say you're coming because if none commit to coming I will not be there. I'm sorry if that comes across as inflexible but my personal life is in chaos and I want to be supportive but I can't operate on a wing and prayer this year. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

Welcome Kathy; and thank you for saving what little dignity I have left.
Sorry I'm really slow with greetings this week but I did have an extra deadline and we don't complain about those because they are money in the bank (more money = more NaNo chocolates).
Will you be at Sat's launch party as well? Either way look forward to meeting you.

Morticia and all,
I plan to attend Saturday's launch -- the first social gathering I have gotten to in the three years of Nano -- since I have nothing on deadline right now (except the first 1,667 words!).
I will be there around 2 p.m. and can help set up if necessary. If not I hope to meet as many others who suffer from this 'annual insanity' as I can.
