LaMishia and I would like to introduce you to yet another Point of Contact (POC) for the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia!

Dressagegirl has courageously volunteered to represent the greater Lexington area. As your POC, dressagegirl will be organizing local meet-ups and write-ins. She will also make sure your local events are posted to the region's Calendar. Our hope is that by having a POC close to home, you will feel more connected to your region and be able to participate in NaNo related activities even though you may be far from the region's headquarters. And now a little bit about your POC: (cue Dating Game theme music)

Dressagegirl has a 16 year history of non-fiction freelance work for area newspapers and literary magazines. She is also no stranger to fiction writing. Although this is only her second year of NaNoWriMo she has been writing fiction since1994. She has participated in fiction writing workshops both online and ...imagine this...in person! Our very own elisgalpal will appreciate this next tidbit: last December dressagegirl won a Jericho fanfic contest and got some neat prizes. She has claimed several writing contest titles over the years including being the state winner for a contest sponsored by Family Circle. Dressagegirl has also been paid for several of her works while writing a variety of stories in urban fantasy, horror, and science fiction. How jealous am I?

We could not be more excited for our Lexington Area Wrimos to have such an experienced writer as your POC! So if you are in the area and would like to introduce yourself to your new POC, this is the place to do it! Post a note to say hello. She will be checking in over the next few days to say hello and get things headed in the right direction.

Happy Noveling!

Howdy all!

I am happy to be your POC for the Rockbridge County area. I have secured a location for the Write-ins, the Buena Vista Public Library on Thursdays from 1-3 pm. They are excited about being the location. So PM me for directions. Remember to refrain from wearing any scented products.

Hello Stanzi,
It's great to know that there are other people nearby taking up the Nanowrimo challenge. I live just outside Lexington towards Kerr's Creek so I can easily come along on Thursdays. Trouble is I'm a complete Nanowrimo newbie so I'm not exactly sure what a write-in is although I could guess. Can you give me some more details and also say just where Buena Vista Library is because I've never been there. Thanks,
Pauline aka alcestis
PS. What's the reason behind the perfume ban?

I'm glad you can come, Pauline. I'm very sensitive to scents, but I'm not the only one with this problem. We ban it also in the Fibromyalgia support group I have that meets in Buena Vista once a month. I'll have to see if I can find a link that directly discusses how your cognitive abilities are affected by the toxins which exist in scents, most of which aren't even regulated by the EPA.

The Buena Vista Library is on Magnolia Avenue, and 21 st Street. It is a Second Empire building, one of the original building still standing built by the Buena Vista company in the early founding of this small southern city. Other still standing buildings including main hall of SVU, and Bargin House on Sycamore, and Park Avenue. The library used to be the old court house. There is a free parking lot very close to the library. There are places to eat close, if not right across from there.

I thought about asking some of my writer friends to drop by and give a pep talk of sorts perhaps. I'll have to see who isn't busy, ha. Bring something to write on, and as in the tradition of the Natale Goldberg writing groups write with wild abandon without restraint about any thing which pops in your head. See her book, Wild Mind for inspiration.

Hello again, Stanzi,
I totally agree about scents as I am also sensitive to them and sometimes feel ill in the presence of a strong perfume. I have been buying non-scented, non-toxic products for years now.
The Natalie Goldberg books are on my shelf and I read and re-read them regularly because they are very inspirational.
Looking forward to the first Thursday in November and a pep talk would be great,

Howdy, Pauline

I really have a problem with such things like that.

I talked to the head librarian today about putting up a display of writing books. Also I said something about printing up a banner proclaiming the BV Library as the Write-in HQ for Rockbridge County. I don't know if there are any banners on this website. Haven't checked. I'll just make one up, if I have to. Still working on writer friends for pep talks.

I have issued press releases for the News Gazette, and for the Comcast announcement-Government access channel in Buena Vista.

I was wondering if there are anymore Nanowrimoers in the Lexington area, Stanzi? We haven't heard from anyone else on this forum so is it just you and me?
Maybe the press releases will bring some more writers out of the woodwork. I hope so because it would be good to know others in the area who have taken up the challenge.

I'm also here in Lexington, at W&L. I know there are a couple of us at the uni planning on doing NaNo this year.

I'm sort of surprised that there aren't any participants from SVU like last year.

Probably what was a surprise to me is, that the News-Gazette's Editor (whom I've worked for as a stringer) has never heard of NaNoWriMo. I don't bother with the Weekly, it is mostly the blotter report.

I checked the paper while at the library yesterday. I don't think they ran the press release. Like Amy-head librarian said, she didn't think it made a difference since all y'all know the location of the Write Ins for Rockbridge County. The BV Government Access channel ran the announcement.

I went in the library to talk to Amy (head librarian) about getting a writing book display, and a banner. She is very excited about NaNo.
