Write in: Au Bon Pain - Copley Place, Boston
When: Sat, Nov 1, 2pm – 8pm
Where: Copley Place Mall, 100 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02116 (Google maps link)
Description: Au Bon Pain is on the lower level at the Stuart Street entrance to the mall.
The management and staff at this location has graciously allowed us to use their space for several hours for a write-in. Please show your appreciation by purchasing a little something (soda, snack, sandwich), so that we make it worthwhile and may be able to return in the future.
MBTA: Copley Place is located near Back Bay Station on the Orange Line and south Commuter Rail lines, and two blocks walking distance from Copley Station on the Green Line.
Driving: Parking is available in Copley Place mall but can be pricey. Ditto the Prudential Center. On-street parking is metered, often requires a parking permit, and is scarce. Parking at 116 Huntington Avenue (Huntington at Garrison St.) is $10 for an indefinite period on weekends -- a great deal.
Check your official Boston calendar of events for info on this and other events.

Is this the place where the first write-in was last year?

This is not the same location we went to for the first write-in in 2007. Last year we were at the Au Bon Pain in Central Square, Cambridge. We're skipping that location because powering 20 wrimos with only one outlet, an extension cord, and four power strips was a little too Rube Goldberg for safety and general health.
Anna (QueenOfTheUniverse) pulled some strings to get us into the Copley Square location, which has a much more extensive menu, a very central location, and lots of seating and plugs.
Cheers,

I managed to get out of a major commitment for that day because one of the people organizing it is my roommate, who saw my crazy novel-writingness last year and understands my dilemma! If all goes well, I plan to be there all day! I just need to figure out where the heck it is! I'm awful at directions to the point where it's practically a disability.

I should be there, for part of the time! I have dance from 12 to 1:15-ish, then I'll have to shower, maybe grab some food at home, or just get something there to give me another reason to procrastinate. ^_^

Just checking-- the email puts the timing for this write-in at 2:00PM to 8:00PM while this post obviously says from 12:00PM to 6:00PM. Which is the correct time?

The incorrect times were my fault; mea culpa. The correct times are from 2 - 8 pm, and I've edited the post to show that.
Thanks for pointing that out! I had missed it entirely.

So wrimos dear, I really enjoyed yesterday's write-in and wanted to thank everybody who came by, wrote with us, and had a lot of fun.
Despite a minor technical glitch or two (usually involving power) and a tee-ninesy bit of scheduling confusion, we managed to have a good time and post some pretty impressive results. Who knew you could run 41 laptops on one power outlet, two extension cords, and six power strips? While it was very Rube Goldberg (not the wrestler; google the name if you're really curious what I'm talking about), it worked. Anna and I especially appreciate how cooperative you all were in accommodating new arrivals and finding spaces to write where we couldn't tell any space existed. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again: You guys rock! Seriously, y'all make it so much easier and more rewarding to host events like this.
We ended up with 48 people at the write-in over the course of the six hours, with many of you staying for most of the event. (We *heart* you for that.) 39 people put their names on the Goal board, and according to my math, you 39 wrote 81,245 words. If we extrapolate this out to all 48 attendees, we wrote a hair less than 100,000 words yesterday at this event. I'm impressed. This total was achieved despite my own modest goal of 300 words (I was kind of busy), and helped by several overachievers who wrote more than 5k each. I just hope you all are as impressed by this achievement as I am. 100,000 words. Whew!
So I wanted to offer special thanks to:
• Wrimos who brought their own power strips. Anna and I have four between us, but we couldn't have powered everybody who needed it without your foresight and help.
• The overachievers who dragged our average word counts up.
• Everybody who scooted up, over, and back to let people in and out, and especially to you hardy souls who compressed your own writing space even further to offer up another seat and table to new arrivals.
• The folks who stayed late and helped Anna and me clean up and pack our stuff before departing. I have to single out mrowsera particularly; she took the time to file all the loose nametags in the box, sorting out the strings, etc.
• Everybody else who did something exceptional last night. I'm fighting a cold and my brain is fuzzy and I'm kind of pooped right now, so I know I'm forgetting somebody important. mea culpa -- just remember that I appreciate you, whether I'm completely compos mentis or not.
Our next write-in is November 4th at b.Good in Back Bay. I can't link to it from here because the web site is still very slow, but information is on our Google calendar and in the write-ins thread stickied to the top of the forum threads list. I hope we see lots of people there!
Cheers,
----------Travis

Thank you, Travis and Anna! Yesterday's write in was a lot of fun, and without it I am sure I wouldn't have written over 2,000 words on day 1. As you know, I'll be unable to join you for more official write-ins until the 22nd, but I'll be thinking of you!
