Howdy and welcome to the Tech Help forum.

This is a forum for asking questions about how to do stuff with the site.
It's also the forum for reporting bugs.
You can also ask general interest tech questions here and maybe someone will answer you.

Here's what we know is broken. Please review this topic, and do not add additional reports for these issues unless new information is available. Please do not respond to this topic with new reports; it will be faster and more efficient to create a new topic, since as these things get longer, they take longer to load. :) Bug reports posted here will be deleted without notice.

Before reporting any new bugs, please give the first couple of pages of the Tech Help forum to make sure it hasn't already be reported; duplicate topics will be referred to older threads and locked.

Site Caching and Posting delays: We are currently experiencing massive backlogs of emails, posts, and updates from the last 24-48 hours. We have been receiving record amounts of traffic. Some areas that may be affected: password reset emails being delayed, caching on the forums, and email notifications. this has been fixed.

Pep Talks/Emails

  • Email notifications/Pep Talks not being received, or I've unsubscribed and am still getting emails: Please post a report in this thread using the form provided.

Word Count Validator

  1. Why is my word count different from the official validator? Different counters count differently. our word count robots are illiterate, and count the spaces between words. The most common culprit is punctuation.
  2. Editing novel info resets word count! There appears to be a small bug in the form. If you have had this happen, please report here with as much detail as possible.
  3. My word count isn't registering on the right day! The word count is saved at midnight... make sure your time zone is set properly. sorry, there is no way to go back and edit previous days' totals.

If you are having trouble logging in or with password resets, please review this topic first for some things to try before posting. If this does not work, and you are not clicking on the link, then detail the exact steps you are following, and we'll try to troubleshoot the process.

Store/Donations

Forums/Posting

  1. [Feature] Disappearing posts: During times of high traffic, there may be an approximately 15 minute site cache that can delay the display of new posts. If your post disappears, wait a while and check back... it'll pop up. This also causes new post notifications to not update for around 15 minutes.
  2. Signatures: Signatures are now displaying at all times. However, when you quote someone else's post, your signature is quoted as well, resulting in a double signature. Fix: delete the signature before you reply, and you will have just one signature.
  3. [Feature] Editing posts: New posts may not be edited. comments which have not received replies will be editable until they have been replied to.
  4. Clicking on the "New" button will not take you to the first new comment if topic has more than one page.
  5. New comments dump you back on page 1 rather than the last page in the thread. Seems to be related to previous pagination errors.
  6. Topics with more than 100 posts fail to load if you have selected 90 comments or more. This is a bug, and is being worked on. Fix: Change your comment settings (bottom of threads) to 50 comments or less, and it should load properly until we can get this fixed.
  7. Mark all forums read: This functionality does not exist at this time, but it has been suggested.
  8. Comment Subjects are limited to 64 characters: The length of a subject line for the first post in a thread can be longer than 64 characters. However, the length of a comment's subject must be less than 64 characters. If you attempt to reply to a thread and get an error message about the length being too long, simply delete some of the words from the end of the subject or give the comment a new subject.
  9. View all posts by user: This is disabled for regular user. It is recommended subscribe to any post you may wish to find later. Even though emails are not functioning quite the way they should, you'll have a list of your subscribed posts under Manage Notifications. You can also set your preferences to automatically subscribe to new posts you make so you don't have to remember.

Search

  1. Search is showing many invalid links, or not showing new posts: This is because of Google's caching. It is currently showing last year's posts, which have been removed and archived. Once Google catches up, it will show the newer posts.
  2. Author Search is not returing the proper results for many searches, including region specific searches. This is under investigation.

NaNoMail

  1. Access denied, not authorized to use: You have not turned on NaNomail. Fix: Go to My NaNoWriMo => Edit User Settings. Scroll down to the Private Messages section and click the box for "Allow Private Messages". Then click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

Profile

  1. Signatures are limited to 250 characters despite the text stating that the limit is 500 characters.
  2. Cover photo not updating
  3. User picture not updating: Possible caching issue or have not hit submit button. Make sure your image is not larger than limit.
  4. Buddy list only shows 11 buddies at a time, in user id order.
  5. Overlong buddy usernames throw off buddy list format - bug report has been filed to request that names be truncated in buddy lists like they do in the forums.
  6. Past year's participation/win not showing: This is a feature, not a bug. You must set your past participation manually, as per the instructions in the Edit your Profile sticky.
  7. Time zone didn't not update for daylight savings. This is a manual setting, you'll need to update your time zone settings so that your word counts will update properly, and you'll have access to the word count tools on time. BE SURE and update before November 30!
  8. Profile doesn't show years won/participated - this is manually updated by you. For instructions, check the Editing your Profile + Novel Info sticky.

Word Count Widgets and API:

  1. Word count widgets have been enabled. Word count API for 2009 has been turned on, Report new bugs in this thread: (Please read through first to make sure you're not making a redundant report.) If you're not sure what an API is, you probably want the Word Count Widgets.
  2. Missing widgets in Widgets page: some widgets have been hidden, since they are not functioning properly. We do not have an ETA on when they will return.

Manage Notifications Module

  1. The new subscriptions module is sending emails reasonably well but in some cases emails are not being sent at all. We are working on getting that stablilized.
  2. Strange error message in Notifications screen.
  3. PM (NaNoMail) notification settings are not being saved.

Regions

  1. Regional count is off - If you have seen a sudden change in the numbers affiliated with your region, this is because we recently stomped a bug which was artificially inflating the numbers.
  2. Regional emails being sent multiple times. (fixed)
  3. "About Us" field not showing up when links aren't entered in regional header.
  4. Regional Affiliates List is not working for most users -- it returns an Access Denied page

Other pages on the NaNo website

  1. Genre scoreboard not working - The genre scoreboard does not display.

Young Writer's Program

  1. [Feature] Accounts are not linked: YWP and the main website are not linked. Accounts must be created separately (although you can use the same username and password.) this is to provide an extra layer of security for the YWP.

NaNo chat
