I have a newly released iPhone app that hit the iTunes store yesterday (NaNoMojo) that uses the wordcount APIs to get user wordcounts. Since the update, all user ids come back as "not found or inactive." When do you plan to re-enable the API so I can let people know what to expect? If it is not until November, is it possible to return the user name and a 'zero' for the wordcount?

From what I can tell, it looks like the APIs aren't yet available and that's why you're seeing the results you are seeing. Hopefully it will get fixed very soon.

Yes, we will re-enable the API. It's not a high priority item for the first few days of October as it doesn't actually give any fun data until November 1 when word counts start.

There are several issues at work here.
1. The number of participants registered on the site officially is low. Right now we have about 4,000. That's because everyone has to log into their account each year to become a participant. The likelihood of you finding your friends on the list at the moment is low. Once we send out the new year invitation email the numbers will swell to our usual amount.
2. There is the API and there's the Word Count. The API gets info from the Word Count. There is no word count to show right now. The only thing the API would pick up right now is the username.
These things will work better if you give it a week or so, which is plenty of time before the actual writing starts.

Thanks for the update. I understand the priorities, believe me. You are correct, the only real value of the API request until November is the username. NaNoMojo does pull back the username and populate it into the iPhone's database, so that little piece of functionality will be temporarily inactive until you guys get a chance to hook up the API again. No worries. I have made a note on the iTunes page and also on the Netphase product page for NaNoMojo to let people know about that issue. As long as you don't plan on changing the API, the app will automatically update all users that were entered once you guys throw the switch. So we are good.
Let me know when you are able to turn the API on again so I can test. Also, if you need any help in the programming area, let me know and I may be able to lend a hand. Chris Baty knows how to reach me.

On the NaNoMojo iPhone app the API is working fine - I see the user avatar, number (wish it had user names too) and the word count is set to zero. However, I can't see anything about me- not my avatar or a number, just a tiny little square off center.
But on the website nothing works. I'm getting the error "513120 user not found or is inactive" when I click on the user wordcount API, and its not just with my own user ID, but with others' too. And, obviously, the word count widgets still aren't working because the API isn't, at least on the website.

Awesome, the API's are working. Thanks Cybele! I just wish the word count widgets were up too, but since those won't be functional until Oct 31/ Nov 1, I'll have to wait to see what they look like and which one to use on my blog. Oh well, it'll be a nice procrastination that night lol.

Maybe it's to do with the fact that I am using your app - or, rather, TRYING to use your iPhone app - in Germany. But I don't have a user number and I haven't the slightest idea where to find it. So the only "buddy" I can see is you - and we haven't been properly introduced yet, now, have we? ;-)
