It was a problem last year and still appears to be there - if I've got more than maybe 10 or 12 writing buddies, only some of them show up on my list of buddies. Can the list either be expanded or paginated?

This is a perennial request and I'll make sure it is on the list again. The magic number is 11 -- that's how many show on the writing buddies tab right now. I, too, would like this to be expanded.

I have only ten showing up but have at least 11 that I know of.

Or I lied, because it told me I had someone as a buddy when I went to add them--who I definitely had last year--and then I didn't have them when I tried again to add them.

For all the sense that makes...

Well, your profile shows 11 buddies and 11 are showing on the buddies tab. Am I misunderstanding -- did you only have 10 at first and then re-add the 11th?

Your buddies have to sign back in for the year in order to show up. So they may not have visited in the past 24 hours.

Yes, we're hoping to add pagination to the buddies list.

The biggest effort this year are some upgrades & optimizations that should keep the site up & speedy. Once that's accomplished we'll put our heads together and get back to the smaller features that make life wonderful.

Yes. I clicked on Maryland's ML because she wasn't showing up as a buddy, maybe because of what cybele said, and it told me she was already a buddy. But then when I still couldn't find her in my list, I went back to her profile and this time it let me add her.

All's well now, though an increase on the limit would certainly be nice. Thanks for the help :)

I can have as many buddies as I want, but only a random 11 will show up on my User page, and I can't pick which 11 show up. It's a little frustrating once NaNo starts...last year I ended up un-buddying a lot of people who had under 1k written after a week or so because I wanted to keep up with the active writers better and all the 0-1k's were clogging it up. I didn't like doing that, but it was the only way...hopefully we'll get this fixed for this year so I won't have to make people feel rejected and unloved! ;)

I have the same problem...I have too many buddies. I wish I could just choose which ones should appear, if a second page is not possible. At first I thought my list was broken, but this seems to be a known issue.

Also 'upvoting' this feature request here after I thought this was just a bug for me. Loads of my friends are doing NaNo this year and 11 doesn't cut it any more!

You can view a list of all your buddies here:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/buddylist

The tab in your profile page currently shows 11 and we're working to address some pagination ... however, since the buddies list doesn't really do much until word count features kick in for November, we're going to address some other high priority items like keeping the site up & working in general.

Ah ha! Thanks for the link to the expanded buddy list. I know it's a small thing, but IF there's time, it would be great to fix & add pagination to the buddy list. I've buddied all the folks in my region who've messaged me or posted on the forum, and would love to be able to keep up with word count so I can cheer them on in good ML fashion. :)

Certainly not a priority, though. Thanks for all the hard work!

Well, if you have someone you want to add as a buddy, go to their profile and click "Add as buddy". To get to a person's profile you can find their name on a forum post and click it, send them an nanomail and click on their name in your nanomail inbox or sent folder, search for them via the Author search or have them send you an email with a link to their profile.

Just click the "Add as Buddy" link on their profile and the Writing Buddies tab will start to fill up!

Hope this helps.

As some know, I'm the UCLA Extension instructor who has a large class participating in NaNo for the last four years. This year we have 45 participants. It would be great to just be able to go my writing buddies page and, poof, there's their word count progress on one page. But only 11 show up. So every year, I end up setting up a page with widget minigraphs. Since the widgets aren't enabled, I can't see their progress without going to each individual buddy.

Any love on this since we're into the first week and the site hasn't crashed and burned yet? (That I know of...) I'd love to be able to see all my little nanoers at once :)

My workaround for that in my regional forum was to start a Roll Call list. Everyone posted to that, and now I can just look down the left column of the thread for their progress bars. :)

That's odd, because there's people who have not visited at all -- I am almost certain of it, because one particular person would have nanomailed me, if she'd been on -- who /do/ show up on my list from past years. If Vulcan'd logged in this year, she would have gotten back in touch with me. It's now week two, her word count is still zero, and I've not received anything from her in the form of contact, so I'm certain that she hasn't logged in for the year. If what you say about people not logged in for the year not showing up is true, then why is she one of the ones that shows up on the page with the wordcount bars?

It's possible she logged in to unsubscribe, or change settings. If you send me a link to her profile, I can check and see if she's actually logged in or not.

Edit: I did some investigating, and sure enough, there's a user displaying who shouldn't.

Yes, I would love to see a way to choose which buddies display, or possibly just re-arrange the listing order so that chosen ones show up on the buddies tab...or yes, pagination would be great, too. I don`t want to necessarily remove folks, but I`d love to be able to control who I see where.

Can`t believe how well the site is running this year. Great job!

I would also love it if something could be done about the buddy list limit. I just added some new buddies recently, and then yesterday checked my buddy list and couldn't see some people on it. I thought it was a glitch at first. Now I know how to get to the page to see who all my buddies were, but it would be nice if I could see how they're all doing without going to their profiles...

I'd love to see all the graphs, but if I could even control which buddies are the 11 that would be an improvement. I have five people on my 11 buddy graph page who have counts of 0. Two more have very low counts that look like they must've quit. Meanwhile I have a very good friend who is a buddy and doesn't appear at all, and she's adding to her count but the only way I can see that is by going to her page.

Since I'm dreaming... Something else that would be nice would be a short 15-25 character text field to note how I know some of these buddies. Many I recognize the user name from other sites, but some go by a different name here. Some I know in other ways and may not recognize the user name, but I know the person. Even something brief like "Write In" or "My Region" or "User Name on other site" would help.

Augh, I would be almost okay with only showing eleven buddies if I could just CHOOSE which ones. I don't want to unfriend people just to get the others back up there, but I really want to be able to see a few that I currently can't. :( Having to click on their profiles all the time just to check is the definition of irritation. . . but this is a free site run mostly by donations and volunteer work, so I won't complain too much!!
