Hi folks, your ML Jen here...
Here's the details on the official write-ins for 2009:
The official weekly write-ins during November will be on Sundays, at the Bread Co on S. Central in Clayton, 2-4 pm (10 S. Central Ave, 63105--map: http://bit.ly/stlnano). This Bread Co is a few blocks north of the Clayton Metro center and has a huge (free-on-weekends) parking lot to its south. Some people arrive as early as noon, others only show up for an hour--you're not required to come or stay very long, so do whatever works for your schedule. If you use a laptop, you might want to bring a power strip because we use up the available outlets very quickly. There is free WiFi in the cafe, and they have really good bagels. Please stop by for writing, word wars, friendly competition, socialization and NaNo goodies. Also, since we're patronizing their restaurant and using up quite a bit of space, please consider buying a coffee or food in appreciation, since they let us use the space for free.
I also hold a write-in on Wednesday nights, 7 pm, at my house in University City (7550 Ahern Ave, 63130). I have WiFi and a cat. If you'd like to bring food or drink that would be appreciated but not required.
It seems like a long way away, but please give me suggestions on where you'd like to have the TGIO (Thank Goodness It's Over) party, which will most likely be in the evening during the first weekend in December.
As a general note: everyone in the St. Louis region is invited to these parties. No one is required to come. They will all be kid/family friendly, but may be held in venues that serve alcohol. I expect that attendees behave themselves in an appropriate manner for the venue, and I will ask offenders to leave. Depending on the event you may be able to bring guests.
There are lots of other write-ins. If the official ones are too far from you, take a look around the forums and see if someone has posted one closer to you. If there isn't one, start it! Make a new topic on the forums and see if there's interest. Good luck, and I hope to see you Sundays!

Do you know the exact address of the Bread Co? I know pretty much where it is because it's right across the street from where my mom works, but for MapQuesting purposes...

I have a sad. The two write-ins mentioned are when I'm working. I was hoping the Sunday one would be in the evening, as I get off at 5. Ah well.

Ooo, neat. I'm looking forward to NaNoWriMo this year- I haven't done write-ins before, so it should be interesting!
One place I was thinking about that would be good for a write-in is the Sci-Fi lounge in University City (6010 Kingsbury Avenue). I'm friends with the owner, and it really is a cool place to hang out. There's wi-fi and snacks and such too, so yay for that.
If folks are interested, I'll see about scheduling something- maybe on a Saturday?

Hey Tumble,
What are the hours on that place? I used to live right by there, but whenever I passed it, it was never open.
Could be a fun place, let me know what you find out. Maybe a good place for the Kick-off...
Another option for us could be the Velocity Cafe, right by the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Metrolink stop.
Keep suggesting!

Tumble, I've never heard of the Sci-Fi loungs. What is it? I love sci-fi, so sounds cool!
I'd love a Saturday write-in there!

The sci-fi lounge is...well, exactly what it sounds like, almost. It's this little out of the way place with all sorts of cool sci-fi themed decor, videogames, etc. The schedule is a little wonky, I'll admit- right now, there's a movie club on Wednesdays, starting at, oh, 9-ish or so.
Thursdays and Fridays, it opens around 8-ish (though it may start earlier), and there's USUALLY some sort of band or DJ or something lined up- I think Punch Drunk Comedy does a thing there the last...thursday of every month?
He just started opening the place from 2pm-6pm Saturday afternoons for people to generally hang out, play boardgames, etc. I figure that'll be the prime time for a write in whenever we wind up scheduling it. I'm glad to hear the interest, though! It's a neat joint that more people should know about. :)

I'd definitely be up for a 2-6 Saturday write-in. Or the evening one, though if there's a band, I can't see myself getting much writing done. Thanks for suggesting the place!

Hello everyone. For the past two years I've been trying to make it to your write-ins and somehow I always get lost and wind up missing out.
This year I doubt I'll get the chance to try what with money being tight and all. If I were closer I would go ahead and give it a shot but alas I am not.
I do wish you all well though and hope the write ins continue to be as much fun and they seem to have been in the past.
God bless! :)

Hello to all.
I'm living a double life. I count both the Southern Illinois and St. Louis regions as my home. I live in Belleville, so write-ins in downtown STL aren't that much farther than Fairview Heights and are closer than Edwardville. Also, I am recruiting someone that lives downtown to do NaNo with me. I'm hoping maybe we can alternate meetings between STL and IL. My question is, will the Washington Ave. area downtown be host to any write-ins next month? Lots of good cafes, bars, restaurants...

Oh, man, a write-in at The Dubliner. I would be all over that. Writing whilst drinking Guinness and/or Smithwicks. What more could I ask for?

Well in that case let's plan one! Doesn't have to be weekly, just once to get InjunJoe back here! (not that I'd complain if it was weekly, though my wallet might!) Since you'll be the one making the longest drive, pick a day that works for you, and I'll be there! (Just preferable not Nov. 7, that's the one day of the month I have an event I can't get out of....my 11 year old cousin's bday celebration.)

You guys pick a saturday in Nov, I just ask that it be no earlier than 2:00 PM, and I'll be there. I plan on hitting as many other events as possible as well. Just as an indicator, if the wewather is nice look for me to be there, it will be an excuse to ride the motorcycle! Somehow I managed to put 6k miles on the trusty Triumph from May to August this year....
I also recommend an in force St Louis Wrimo invasion of Columbia at some point during November.

How about Saturday, Nov. 7 for a write-in at The Dubliner? 2:00ish so InjunJoe can make it? Then when we're done beating our heads against our keyboards, we can drink into the wee hours of the morning and commiserate over our early November NaNo woes. :)

*puts on moderator hat* Let's keep this to discussion of the official write-ins, shall we?
I'd like to have a St. Louis Night of Writing Dangerously (Nov 22, check the main page of the NaNo site for more details), would you folks be interested in having it at a place like the Dubliner? Now, such a place would exclude our younger members, so keep that in mind, and it would likely NOT BE FREE. And I cannot foot the entire bill to rent out a party room, so y'all would have to contribute.
We could also ask local bookstores if they'd be willing to host us (and possibly stay open late-the official San Francisco goes from 5-11 pm). This might or might not be free. Please let me know your suggestions.
Remember, official write-ins are the only place to get official NaNo goodies.

If it's going to be a night of "Writing Dangerously" shouldn't it start at about midnight somewhere on the East Side?

Since I live in IL, I'll take this one...
Yes.
And as far as the Dubliner is concerned, I'm fairly certain that they are considered a restaurant, not just a bar. So the youngsters may be able to get in for the early portion. This would need to be verified. I also have no idea if the Dubliner has WiFi.

I would definitely be interested in doing this. I know personally I'm a little broke right now, so while I would be willing to chip in for a party room, or to rent out a meeting space at a book store, cheaper would be better for me, especially since I'm sure we'll also want food/drinks wherever we go. I checked the Dubliner website, and they have 2 rooms. One holds 60 people, one holds 100, but it doesn't say how much it costs. They are open until midnight on Sundays.
There's also Schlafly. They do have their prices online, and here they are:
The Club Room at The Tap Room
Capacity: 150 buffet / 250 cocktail party
Room fee: $500
Minimum spend: $3,000
The Eliot Room at The Tap Room
Capacity: 50 buffet / 70 cocktail party
Room fee: $200
Minimum spend: $1,000
The Crown Room at Bottleworks
Capacity:80 buffet / 60 bistro / 120 cocktail party
Room fee: $300
Minimum spend: $2,000
The Tap Room is downtown at Locust and 21, Bottleworks is in Maplewood I'm not sure if the "minimum spend" includes the room fee or not.

I might be able to come to the November 1st write-in, and hopefully others. My school's open house is on the 1st, and all students are required to be hostesses unless they have a prior engagement, which is awful. Luckily, there are two shifts. The first goes from noon to two p.m., so I'll probably just sign up for that one and go to the write in immediately after. That's just how dedicated I am.

A write in is what turns NaNoWriMo from just a mere chore or goal into a social opportunity. It's where several writers meet at a designated place with their notebooks or laptops and write. You don't have to prepare anything but you will meet peers who will be happy to lend opinions about what you've done so far. It's basically an opportunity to gain a support system to help you reach your goal. Plus, it's a really fun way to spend an afternoon. You will meet some great people. Come check it out!
