All Right! We have Write-a-Thon!

When: November 16th

Time: 10am - 8pm

Where:
Valhalla's Game Center
6161 W 44th Ave
Wheat Ridge, CO 80033-4743
(303) 463-5451

Cost: $5 per person + any donation you would like to make to OLL.

Come one, come all, come write! A full day's write in with word wars, prizes and pizza. Bring your lap top and surge protector as Denver Nanos descend on Valhalla's Game Center on November 16th! Not only are there awesome gaming stuff to buy but they also have a massive game room. We get to take it over to write. Just like last year you may come and go as you please...we will have prizes and word wars throughout the day.

$5 dollars gets you in the door (it's the fee for the space), pizza around 5:30-6pm. Vahalla's has a no outside food policy because they sell their own food.

Plus, if you put in a donation for OLL you'll get an entry to win an Alphasmart Dana!

Yay!

Do we need to reserve our places like last year? Since this is a Monday, I couldn't do the full day, but I could show in the evening.

No you won't need to save a spot. When you come you will be asked if you're part of the group. The front counter is right by the door. We'll be in the back.

I tried finding any other day that we could have a place. But it seems the Monday is the defacto day for this type of thing without paying beaucou bucks for the space.

Plus they have food options without people being forced to buy food there. They may feel the need to buy other junk such as Monty Python Rabbits. But I take no responsibility for that.

Okay. cool. :) I figured it was a money issue (I have friends who got married on a Thursday for that very reason) but since I can't be there in the morning, I wasn't sure if I'd need to claim an evening spot. Thanks for getting it set up!

This sounds really interesting! I may have to check it out that evening, since I work until 5. It'd be great to meet some other nanoers, aside from everyone I already know.

This sounds super fun (and is really close to me, yay!), I will definitely stick it on my calendar and should hopefully be free that day!

I have jury duty that day....ugh

But if I end up not having to serve it means I already have a sitter for the day so maybe I can come for a while!

I want to come, even if it's the only meet-up I get to attend. I have to teach that day, so I'll be there after 4pm.

This is my first year doing Nano and I was ecstatic when I learned of this Write-A-Thon! I have class that day but I am off from work. I decided to talk to my teacher and ask her if it was acceptable to miss the day of class and she responded by asking what I was missing class for. I told her about the event and she gave me her blessing to miss class, thank goodness it was English Comp!

5 dollars to get in, so what is the fee for pizza? What are the food options for people who plan on staying the day at the Valhalla? Is there any security to ensure the safety of people's laptops or should we just plan on moving them if we get up and about?

Thanks for the answers in advance. I hope to see a large turn out and I look forward to meeting fellow writers and discussing the craft we all love.

Vahallas sells food and will be charging the $5 per person. We'll have to figure out pizza cost depending on who is there at the time and who wants it. Because we have the room laptop leavings shouldn't be a problem...but it is a public place.

Yes, the universe has aligned, and I have all day Monday off of work to come to this. Wooooo.

Side note: I live in Longmont, so pretty much anyone on the way to Wheat Ridge will be on the way, so if you are also planning on coming to the write in and would like to car pool/ snag a ride from someone like me who is already driving anyways, let me know.

I am planning to come during the daytime hours, but will likely have to leave around 4 or 5, so one of you evening people can probably have my spot. Unless my hubby suddenly decides he feels like babysitting for the evening! :) See you guys there!

I don't know if RSVP'ing is the proper etiquette for this, so I thought I'd put give a heads up for me and a plus one just in case (does it show I've never done this before?). We'll probably come for most of the day.

Looking forward to seeing people there!

I'm planning to be there, since it's in my neighborhood. Won't be able to show up until the afternoon, but I'll probably stick around for a few hours, meet some people, and chow down on some pizza. There's also a game I've been planing to buy, so hopefully they have it.

I've been such an antisocial slacker in the past, but I had fun at the TC/Highlands Ranch write-in on Saturday afternoon. I found it very entertaining and broke my 1-day record for words churned out. Niassa even brought us candy! And lizards.

I'm trying to summon the motivation to drive to Wheat Ridge from Parker. I'm on a 32-hour work schedule (hooray economic ruin) but it's arranged so I get alternating 4-day weekends. I was just carping that I don't fill my 4-day weekends with anything besides sitting on the couch, farting around on the net, playing Xbox, and squeezing in my 1667 words.

Has anyone been to Valhalla's before? Is it comfortable enough to hang out all day? I kinda dislike the "no outside food" rule, but, what can I say, it's not my store.

So c'mon DenNaNos... talk me into getting off my butt. :-)

I'll stop by! What are we doing about regularly scheduled Write-Ins too? I was planning on going to the Eastside Panera Write-In at 6, is anyone else planning on hitting up both or should I just stick around at Valhalla's?

Maybe this'll be the ticket I need to catch up ;)

I was really looking forward to coming, but with my laptop dead, and not wanting to write by hand (how do you do word counts with that? Guesstimate?) I better stay home to write on my desktop.
On the brighter side, a dead laptop means a reason to buy a new one, any recommendations?

I love my thinkpad t61p, but I've heard newer versions of their preinstalled software (some of which is actually awesome, it can do bios updates for me safely) can pop up at the stupidest times, even when running apps like powerpoint full screen (unless they fixed this). They are also one of those manufacturers that does not give you an os cd sadly.

Dell has great service and if you're willing to pay for it can even get on site support where they will come to you and fix your laptop, which is pretty nice. Build quality isn't as good as the thinkpads, but then in terms of durability/etc nothing else comes close, not even macs (they're just prettier ;-)).

Suddenly, my monday has become full of obligations I cannot get out of every hour or so during the day, so I wouldn't even have time to drive over, let alone write. But t he write ins are GREAT fun and I encourage everyone who possibly can to go! I was at the first two and really am bummed I'll miss this one. I may never get a sticker! LOL

I'll be there 10 - 8.

Vahallas is a gaming store....and we are taking over their gaming area for today. The no outside food is a downer but I can understand the need for avoiding food poisoning lawsuits for stuff they didn't provide.

We'll have candy, and prizes for word wars!

And can you say non-alcoholic alcohol flavored coffee?

(Not to drink, for overaged prizes as well!)

This was a cool event, thanks to the Denver ML's for coordinating!

I was the antisocial guy against the wall who failed every word war (although I only participated in about half of them). And dang you, whoever beat me that one time BY NINE WORDS!

Although I was antisocial and angst-ridden by writing myself into numerous corners, I still had a great time and broke my one-day word record again. The first time it was broken was at the write-in at the Tattered Cover two days earlier.

I must say, though, I found Valhalla's a tiny bit creepy and odd. I think it's because I'm not a gamer. :-)

Thanks everyone who was involved in setting up the write-a-thon! I had a great time despite being half-asleep and not winning any word wars. But I had my most productive day of writing by putting in 2,815 words (measly compared to sme, I know) and ending the day at 28,005 words.

And a big thanks to the people I were sitting with from the writing support group (told you I don't remember names, lol). They supplied me with a pair of adorable plot bunnies and some good laughs.

On a similar note, who won the raffle from the Alphasmart?

No, I'm a gamer too and it is a creepy and odd place. Got that great "in mother's basement" feel to it, doesn't it. Someone should let them know that many gamers don't meet in basements anymore.

Wish I could have gone. It sounded like a lot of fun. With a dead laptop, looks like I'll be missing most of the fun part of NaNoWriMo.

Sure they do...they just meet in their own.

I know...I went home after the write-a-thon to a d&d game in my basement.
