The forums have only been back up for three days and we're already up to $200. That's fantastic! It puts us at number 27 on the scoreboard. I want to see us climb that scoreboard, both in donations and (when November starts) word count. We'll be like pirates, amassing our booty for the good of the future of NaNoWriMo!

MMMM.... Pirates....
Too bad talk like a pirate day isn't in november.
Just wanted to bring up the discussion from last year about having a donaiton jar at the bbq, drinkies, and write ins for those of us who don't have acess to paypal (or who just have too much change) to chuch a few dollars in. The idea being that a trusted individual tallies up the amount and donates it to nano. Obviously we wouldn't be getting halos or donor goodies or so forth, but hey, at least we feel like we are doing something.
Don't know if it would be possible, but hey, it's worth suggesting.

There is a Sekrit Plan in progress for a donation jar, with a special reason behind it. More information will be available soon... *looks mysterious*

Oooooh! Shiney.
Does the special reason involve invisable plot bunnies in santa suits? Am I close?

First, can I please say Lauren, that I'm really glad you are our ML this year :) As such, I'm actually going to be foolish and try this one more time. As for donating, I can't right now - just wrote my car off on one of our recent rainy nights - however, if I can get my hands on a new car asap and still have money left, I will be donating this year :)
I'm looking forward to this. Madness :)

I may have to draw invisible bunnies in Santa suits on the donation jar. But no, the Sekrit Plan is revealed here.
Sorry to hear about your car, Lollie, that sucks. I hope you're up and running soon.

Next week be pay week. $50 donation, get me a t-shirt, the badges.... I want a hoodie, but their vbersion of 5xl is pathetic. Smaller than a 2XL t-shirt. I have emailed and voiced my concerns over this sizing, and how it prevents me from putting more money into something this awesome.....
Soon, I will be all haloey..... and t-shirty...

*points to halo* I donated! And bought some of those cool merit badges (be prepared to see them on my laptop bag at write-ins).
I'll also chuck in a few bucks at each event if I can. We should see if we can get one of those awesome tins like what highway collectors use. :-P

I'm thinking one of those big tins from the Reject Shop -- the ones styled like a $50 note or whatever -- which I'll decorate. I'm on a tight budget, but I reckon it'd do. I will be at most if not all events and will bring it with me to all the ones I go to, and if anyone does happen to do an impromptu collection if I'm not around, they can pass it on to me. Then at the TGIO party we can crack it open and count it, and then I'll bank it and donate it.
I'm so pleased people are donating! Thank you! We're at number 25 now.
Edit: I've just found out that my bank has a change counting machine that I can just pour the change into and it will count it for us. Yay for not having to do it manually!

I'm on a super tight budget right now, but donating to NaNo is going to be worked in somewhere before the end of November! =D (I just like getting a halo so I can pretend like I'm angelic.)

You do have special dispensation not to write, still. It's fine. I think it's great that you donate anyway!

I don't even want to think about how many tweets it'd take to do 50K.
We're currently at $320, sitting at number 35 on the scoreboard. That's fantastic stuff considering we're still quite a few days out from November actually starting!
I've sorted out the donations tin -- I forgot about the invisible plot bunnies -- and my bank has this nifty machine I can dump the change in and it will count it all for us, which I am rather excited about.

Mine pushed us up to 33. Yay us. You're a great salesperson, Lauren, and though but a newbie-ling (my 2nd year here) I'm glad you're Melb's ML, too. (aww :P )
Also, yeah, those coin machines are totally nifty. We got $65 from our excess coinage just this weekend. Very handy when one gets paid monthly. :/

May have to wait a few paydays, but definitely planning to donate this year (must go check out hoodies)...
I would like to point out that change counting machines work by weight and can be inaccurate, so I highly suggest counting the change anyway. I have some change bags left over from theatre production if you want them?

Awww, bless. Maybe all those years working for Ticketmaster did me some good. Or maybe it's just 'cause I really love NaNo and I try to pimp it without nagging.
If you're a second-year 'newbie', does that make you a twobie?
I've got a bunch of change bags here. I put all my silver in a money tin at the end of the day and then count it out when the tin gets full. I used the last lot to buy some stuff for the kick-off BBQ, but I'm sure I'll have accumulated some more to stick in the donations tin so I can rattle it at people.
I could test out the accuracy of the machine at my local branch a couple of times before November's over with some of my own pre-counted change to see if my total and theirs agree, but if not I'm set for bags, thanks though.

It's usually not much, but I've noticed that it happens a bit with smaller coins (typically silvers), although I've also noticed it can happen with dolllars. I don't think it's the machine, I think it's the wear that happens to the coins after being handled a lot (since I doubt people try to mill the edges anymore).
I usually find it's best to do a cash reconciliation before heading to the bank - a quick excel spreadsheet where you can input the number of each denomination and come up with a total for deposit - then if the deposit the bank says is due from the change machine matches yours, you know everything's fine - and if it doesn't, you have a breakdown of coinage to track down where the discrepency is.

Well, any excuse for me to use an Excel spreadsheet!
You'd think I'd've gone off them after all the profit and loss shenanigans for uni, but the first thing I did once I got confirmed as ML was break out Excel to make a calendar of events that I could then tick off as I confirmed and posted them.
(Then I told Danny I was ML, which consisted of me being all 'I know something you don't know', then mentioning Loki and Talea retiring. He asked, 'Do you think you'll apply?' and I said 'Nah.' Then I said, 'Because I already have and I got the position.' Tricksy Lauren is... easily amused.)

This may be a silly question but how do we donate besides over the Internet? I went to the donate section and didn't see anything about it...

The only way they have listed there is by cheque, which has to be in US dollars, which is quite involved. If you're coming to the BBQ or a write-in or some such, I will have a donation tin people can put money in.

I figure I can afford to donate one dollar per two thousand words I write, and as I'm planning to write at least seven thousand in the next little while, I'll bring along a goldie for the jar :-) I chickened out last year on account of not having a PayPal account, and wrote way too many words: by that calculation I'm $47 in debt.
Peril...

Oooh, just got the most awesome idea.
I should get people to sponsor me and donate based on how many words I write! That's the coolest idea.
I might donate half to NaNoWriMo and half to PEN or the Marxism 2010 conference....
