Does anyone (other than Sam) use a Neo? I'm trying to decide whether to ask Santa for one or not. How easy is to to download from the Neo to a regular computer?

A Neo is an adorable, physically lightweight and pretty small word processor that runs something like 700 hours on (I think) 3 AAA batteries, can go anywhere and is nearly indestructible, but is very basic -- all it does is word process. No e-mail, no Internet, no CD-playing or burning, nuffin.
It sounds ideal for things like short trips on which one doesn't need e-mail or Internet or a way to back up on disk. I've seen Sam's (Sam's a NaNo friend) and he's very enthusiastic about it; I guess I'm worried it's too good to be true. It costs about $200, which is fairly reasonable -- at least, so it seems to me, with memory of writing by hand on camping trips where I'm unwilling to take my laptop because it's too dusty and stuff.

I have an Alphasmart which is similar to a Neo. They are very basic, just doing word processing. I have hardly used mine, preferring a laptop instead. I haven't ever tried transferring something from it to the computer, but it's supposed to be fairly easy.

I used an Alphasmart Neo for my first two novels. It worked great but got a little flaky at the end (would spontaneously shut down if I used it on my lap instead of a flat surface). Since all text is automatically saved as it is entered, I never lost anything. But it worried me enough to stop using it (after, as I said, writing two novels on it). It was inexpensive, ran forever on its AA batteries, and uploading to the regular computer was a cinch. Customer support for the few problems I had was excellent. The tiny view screen is ideal fo NaNoWriMo, because when you can only see six lines of text at a time, you are less tempted to edit or go back. Also ideal: no internet = no distractions.
And, it was a sure-fire conversation starter in coffee houses etc. Invariably someone would ask me what it was, and then I got to explain to them how I was writing a novel :-)
For this year's NaNoWriMo I bought a Dell netbook for $400.

My plan is to once again use the Sony Vaio laptop I bought two years ago. It's been pretty much trouble-free, and since it's a more powerful computer than my older desktop, it's become my primary PC.

I'm also going to use my Sony Viao for this Nano. Some of the people who have the Alphasmarts in RWA Tucson SWEAR by them. Have you tried it out to see if it's comfortable for you? Try it out before you make a decision since it's going to be the main thing atatched to your hands for a month! :-)

I haven't tried it out yet, no. I use an ergonomic keyboard with my desk-top, and from laptop experience know that using the old-style keyboard is slow, annoying and comic, but . . . . I'd be using the Neo for camping trips and other away times, not for main writing (including NaNo-ing). (Laptop works fine, though needs a new battery; I just don't dare take it camping.) My only real concern is being able to get the stuff off the Neo and onto my desktop. Apparently that's not a big problem, so now the only obstacle is finding the $. In theory, I use my writing "profits" for writing-related purchases, which means I need to sell a couple hundred $ worth of articles or get an advance (ha) before I buy one. Sigh.

Well, it's not in my hands yet, but I have ordered a Neo -- a used Neo, because I couldn't afford a new one and I didn't want to wait. But I figure that because they're designed to take rough treatment and there are basically no moving parts, a used Neo's as safe as a used car. I look forward to having it in time for our Halloween camping trip, even if I probably won't get a chance to start this year's novel before we head home. Now, if I can just get my desk cleared off so that I can NaNo in good conscience, I'll be all set!
