What's the write-in landscape look like for this year? Last year there were some at DVC and at least one that I attended at Berkshire Books out on Clayton Rd. I seem to recall Clayton Books was novelist-friendly as well. Everyone living in Mt. Diablo's shadow, say "howdy!"

Pleasant hill! I'd love to see some DVC write-ins again seeing I wouldn't need a ride from my parents to get to them! After school hours would also be nice.

Did you go to the ones with Laura? I know there were one or two people who were there before me, but I could only go to the second part, when it was just Laura and me.

I just made it to one at Berkshire books. I was the loon with the typewriter, if that jogs any memories.

Ah, I didn't make it clear that I was referring to the DVC write-ins Colloseum mentioned. But the Berkshire ones I always went to late, too! I think I saw you there once, when I got there as you were leaving.

No harm done: I wish I was able to attend more write-ins last year... it was fairly productive, not being able to find an excuse to do something other than write. :-)

I'll be doing Nanowrimo again this year, and Berkshire Books will be hosting write-ins again too. They'll be every Sunday during store hours (11:00 to 6:00). Details to follow...

No I never made it to one but this year I am working on changing that and going to ones on the weekends... Or after 4pm within walking distance (DVC). I only got to the midway party in walnut creek last year. I had so much fun writing on paper (yes I was old school then) but this year I can be wayyyyy more competitive since I have my new macbook pro to write on so I can actually have a chance at winning things. haha

I'm going to try and organize a weekly write-in at DVC. I've got a couple of possible locations on campus that I want check out before I give an official day and time, but I'm hoping to arrange a spot for Wednesdays at 4pm.

Dutifully saying "howdy." I missed last year after a valiant two-day attempt, but I'm back this year. I hope to get to the kickoff at La Scala, but we will see.
Someone really brought a real typewriter to write-ins last year? That is so... cool. Or nerdy. Or cool.

That same somebody crossed the 90,000 mark and typed "The End" a day before Thanksgiving last year. Never underestimate the awesome word-generating powers of The Typewriter Brigade and our magical metal word-factories.

I remember Berkshire having a table set up last year. I wasn't participating, but I plan on hitting there this year. Not sure where else I'm going to park myself, though I think I'm going to check out that new cafe on Clayton near Berkshire. I haven't been there yet, but it opens nice and early, and I'm usually up before sunrise anyway.
Looking forward to Nano'ing this year. I did it once about 4 years back, then did about 12k words the year after, and haven't even tried the last two years. This year, I'm working my own hours, and only part-time, so I have no excuse to not participate this year. :D

Hi *waves* - I'm right across the street from DVC so count me in for those :) And maybe Berkshire Books, too
I've tried doing this 3 years running on my own with no luck, so this time I swear I'm gonna make the write-ins :D

Heya! I'm technically in Pittsburg, but who actually hangs out there? I'm gonna try to squeeze in a few Write-ins between school and work. I swore never to set foot on DVC again, but NaNo is the exception to every rule!

Write-ins may prove problematic for me this year as my laptop froze up an hour (and over 1,000 words) in last night. However, I have recreated those thousand words and typed up the couple thousand more I had wrote - am at the office as I type.
Geek Squad thinks it's the mother board, and they've sent it out for repair. Good news: under maintenance plan. Bad news: 2 1/2 to 5 weeks to get it back. AND, if it's not the mother board, they will replace the hard drive. I couldn't afford to give them $99 to back up; fortunately almost everything was backed up on my external hard drive - everything but the 1000 words from last night.
If I get lappie back or find one to borrow, THEN maybe I can do write-ins. I hosted some at my church in Martinez last year. Not well attended, but I got a lot done as did another NaNo. (She's not participating officially this year but will come out and write if we have write-ins, she says.)

majorsamfan, my laptop has a really terrible battery life, and the power cord doesn't stick well in most laptops, so I usually bring a notebook and a couple of pens to write-ins instead. It's not as fast as typing, but I still tend to get more done at the write-ins than I do at home, even if I'm scribbling by hand.

I'm going to give this a shot again this year. In the past, I've dropped the ball about halfway through but I really think I can do it this year. I'm near Berkshire books (but I've never been inside) and a few blocks from Clayton books.

Pacheco here. This is my first Nanowrimo. The write ins sound cool. How do they work? Are they more social, or does everybody just sort of hunker down and get stuff done?

After 3 false starts Sunday, I decided to go hit a cafe this morning (Joe Seppi's on Clayton Road in Concord), see if a change of scenery would help. It did. Almost 1300 words in about 40 minutes. Woo! I now have an idea where I want to take the novel.
I think my plan is to go there a few mornings, when they first open up. If you're stop by, say hiya to the fat guy in black with the dharma punx bumper sticker on his laptop.
I don't think I'm going to hit the write-ins. I don't do well in crowds.

Whew! Your description of 3 false starts makes me feel better. I'm not quite there, but I can do it. I was distracted my 1st day at a cafe (Mo' Joe in Berkeley), but was happy to meet another WriMo and will be back Friday afternoon (unless I get laid off sooner). I'm the redhead with the wheelchair that looks crazy-too-big for little me.

I didn't make it to a write-in on Sunday but want to try again this weekend.
This is my second year doing NaNo and I've been looking forward to it all year. I didn't 'win' last year, but I just might this year. Either way, I'm super excited to be doing this again.
I stopped at Clayton books on Saturday and was told that NaNoWriMo was not on the calendar. So, Berkshire books it is (my preference anyhoo).
How was it on the 1st?

This is my first NaNo and I've never done a write-in, but I'm all for going to one. I'm at DVC all the time anyway, so I'd definitely be down for that if someone could get a location securde. (:
Everyone keeps talking about Berkshire books. Where exactly is that?

Worked at Panera today, I love it there. Though I was positioned around the corner front the door so I got distracted every time someone came in. Will be there a couple times, mostly on mondays around lunch time if any one cares to join me... Don't really have much in way of description. Though I have a black and silver compaq... I should put my Nano sticker on it...

Anyone interested in hitting La Scala on Thursday nights, from say 7 or 8 to 11 p.m.?
I had planned on going to the opening write-in on Sunday the 1st, but I seriously hyperextended my knee in the morning and was laid up on the couch all day. You'd think it would have helped my word count, but pain is a curiously distracting thing.
Today (Tuesday the 3rd) I am heading to the Peet's across from Heather Farms from 1ish to 2:30ish if anyone is in the area and wants a writing buddy.
Cheers,
Peter.
