There's been some interest already in a York writing group, anyone else fancy it? I'm fairly new in town, so I don't know where people would suggest, but Monty's Cucina on Monkgate is wonderful and has WiFi at least.

I'm a York peep! Although between the full-time job I'm starting on the 2nd of November, and the full-time toddler at home, I don't have a huge amount of time available. There'll be the traditional Sunday afternoon write-ins (including one in a beach hut in Scarborough!), which I should be able to make, but if people want to organise extras elsewhere in the week then feel free!

I'm a York peep! Juggling family and uni but I got the timetable through and Wednesday and Thursdays are good plus a couple of mornings or afts in the week. Weekends will have to be specifically arranged so I can bat my eyelids at my partner if the boys aren't through to their dad's.

I'm in York as well - in previous years we've tended to use Starbucks over Borders - it has wifi, there's usually plenty of room, and it's easy to drop in and drop out any time and is nice and cheap - perfect for group writing and a nice cheap cup of java (well, in my case a coffee mocha). Could I suggest that as a venue again this year, since it's worked so well previous years? Not that we'll be meeting up for another month yet, so there's plenty of time to discuss venues...

Can I argue against going to a Starbuckses, purely because it's a Starbuckses, and there are lots of places in York which aren't Starbuckses?

I'm still in York :)
But I don't know if I'm participating this year yet...my first baby is due on November 21st...which, if he's on time or late, kind of makes this the perfect year to have a go as I'm already on maternity leave...but I don't seem to have any imagination so I don't know what kind of success I'd have. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm.
But if I am, then I'd def be keen for meeting up and writing lots! I even have a new teeny tiny laptop to make writing in town so much easier this year :)
I shall attempt to not forget to check this space for dates!

I would also vote against Starbucks, because I can't stand the smell of coffee lol.

To be honest, I also have a general issue with going to Starbucks, when there are pleanty of places that are not Starbucks available. What about Evil Eye? I believe they have Wi-Fi and its a central location.

I like the idea of the Evil Eye. That's where the students are meeting anyway, I think. Those unfamiliar, it is a bar with an incredibly wide variety of alcohol and a pretty good Thai/Indonesian kitchen. I believe it also does the normal complement of coffees and teas and c.

What's the deal with Evil Eye and people under the age of 18, what with it being a bar and all? I don't want us to accidentally end up excluding people...

I'll make as many Sunday write-ins as I can. I really doubt I'll hit the 50k this year as I have a couple of uni deadlines in November for ye olde MA (add that to a full time job and 3 small kids, and I think I'm doomed!) Still, it wouldn't be November without Nano.
The Scarborough beach hut (new and improved) is on offer, for any non-perishing dry Sundays - preferably without snow this year! I think I've only just defrosted from the extreme novelling last year!
I'm fairly central in York - can get anywhere :) Not likely to be on the forum quite so much this year - sorry about that - it's just going to be pretty fraught fitting it all in.

That's a good question, I'll try and find a phone number and check tomorrow (my awful memory permitting). But it serves food and such during the day, so it should be okay.
But providing it's okay, when would people like to meet?

I just called up Evil Eye. They're okay with under 18s as long as they are accompanied by adults. So we should be okay there. Wi-fi access is a pound for a day's use.

so yeah, folks: when? do we want a meet pre-kickoff and do the whole getting-to-know-you bit, or should we wait until afterwards so any awkward silences can be covered by staring at our various notepads and/or laptops and feigning deep concentration?

Isn't the Evil Eye a pub? Wouldn't we be better off in a coffee shop? Maybe I'm just old fashioned lol. Certainly, alcohol and writing doesn't really mix for me, and neither does alcohol, drunk people and expensive laptops... but I'll go with the flow I guess, as the social side of Nano is the nicest thing in my experience :)

The art gallery cafe does sound ideal - though I wonder if they have wifi for those who want it. Though do we actually need wifi? Aren't we there to write? ;)
As an old hand at this kind of thing, I would suggest that what we need is: somewhere that serves caffeine (the drug of choice of writers everywhere), big tables for laptops, and quiet enough to accomodate five or six of us (probably across two or three tables). I think pubs / bars are generally a bad idea for write-ins, as drinks get knocked over, whereas mugs of tea / coffee are a little safer. Also, coffee bars / cafes means any of our Nano writers of any age can come to join us.
Rog :)
