So, to start 09 right, we need to have a kick off party! I'd like to open up a discussion on possible locations you all would like to go and when! My gut reaction would be to say Oct. 24 at Black Rose @ 7 because they love us. Does that work? Please list any yay's or nay's below and get the ball rolling! :D WHEE!

Have you talked to the Black Rose owners yet? They've got a new business there and are a bit more cramped for space than they used to be. That and they've got an event scheduled for the 24th already :(

Yay kickoff party! I probably won't be able to go if it's in the evenings on a weekend (boo job) but if it's not, count me in, wherever it is. :3

I haven't talked to them yet. I just found out today I was it... So I just used that as a jumping off point since I'm out in the boonies today. :)

The 24th wouldn't work for me as I believe I have a band festival...although Sunday of that weekend would work.

I'm good for any evening of the week of Oct. 19th-24th; but I am out of town from 28th Oct. through Nov. 1st. Hoping to make a kick-off party this year, but . . . .

Saturday, 10/24 would be fine for me. I have a bit more freedom this November since I'm not working.

If the Black Rose won't work out, I'm sure we'd be welcome at one of the libraries again. I remember the librarians at the River Branch last year were very interested in what we were doing, and I'm sure if we booked a room for the party early, the staff at whichever branch we were going to use would put up information about it ahead of time.

We have a lot of libraries to choose from, including they opened a branch in the old Silo building by Park Place Mall. The branch at 36th and Kino would offer easy access to anyone traveling in via freeway, while still being close to the UA. There's also Columbus, Bear Canyon, the branch on 1st south of Prince, and a number of others.

If we'd like to use one of the libraries, and you want some help getting it set up, let me know. All we need is to decide which branch we'd like to meet at and the date/time, and I can swing by and inquire about getting it scheduled.

I'm on the NW side, and my first choices among the libraries suggested would be the River Branch and the one on 1st South of Prince; otherwise, the one at 36th and Kino is good for me by freeway. (Nanini and Oro Valley are closest to me, but far, far from the UA.)

If it's on a Saturday, I'd rather it be after 2 p.m. so I don't have to skip exercise to get there.

Thanks, Hoomi, for doin' so much work on this.

I'm w/ Hoomi on the library idea. The River branch was very good to us last year, but Woods seems to be a little more accessible for a lot of folks. Himmel and Martha Cooper are also pretty good locations, but MC was all booked up last year. The rooms fill up quickly - especially on weekends - so best to make reservations soon.

Well, so far, all I've done is make suggestions and the offer. I haven't actually done any work yet, and I sure won't do so without our ML giving me a go-ahead. I'm just volunteering to help out, not presuming to take the lead.

Whatever we choose, though, Midwinter is right; we should get going on it ASAP, so that we have the best chance of getting the room we want, and then being able to publicize the event well.

Hoomi, that sounds divine! Woods does sound like the most welcoming one. If you would like to set that up for us, that would be great. I could also call around and see who'd be willing to take us in! Thank you so much!

Any library is a good idea, since Nano has more creds than it did five years ago. Oro Valley has a huge meeting room, but only drinks and no food. Also, it closes at 5 pm except 8 pm on Tues, Thurs. And it's 15 miles from the U.

Consider the closed off banquet room at IHOP on Oracle at Limberlost. They're busy Saturday during the day, but by 7 pm it gets pretty quiet and they don't mind groups convening so long as they buy something.

This may be a completely idiotic question, but why would the kickoff party be in October? We technically wouldn't be able to write at that point, correct? Or is the kickoff party just supposed to be a "hi-I'm-so-and-so-let's-be-friends" sort of thing? Anywho, I'm hoping that I'll be able to go, and as far as I know the 24th is good for me. Then again, maybe not... Rides may be an issue seeing as the parentals will be out of town... I guess we'll see. I'm hoping that having a bunch of local support will lead me to actually get somewhere this year!

You're on the right track - the kick off is kind of a pre-NaNo pep rally and meet & greet. It's a way to put faces to names, and to spend time w/ a group of people who understand what NaNo is all about.
The October 31st midnight sprint kicks off the actual writing.

Okie dokie. I'll check with the Woods Branch on Monday regarding using one of the rooms for a kick-off party. I assume we want to shoot for a weekend evening, which may be a problem if the branch isn't open late on weekends. Is there an opinion for second choice day/time? As I recall, last year we had our Kick-off party on a Thursday evening, as I went straight to the River Branch library after my flute lesson that week.

Do we want to plan on convening at the IHOP on Oracle near Tucson Mall for the Midnight Sprint on the 31st, as we did last year?

I'm sure the IHOP is the plan for Halloween, as usual. (Xander, we totally forgot to talk to them about that yesterday, whoops) Fri-Sun is best for me, as I'm pretty much sequestered at school* at all hours the other days, except for when I go to my critique group.

But if there's anyone else doing NaNo who happens to go to the Art Institute, come find me in the library Mon-Thu, haha.

I'm pretty new to the area, so any place where I can get out and meet people is fine. The library sounds awesome for the initial kick off and the IHOP is right down the street from me.

Ashleen O'Gaea, I believe I met you at Fall Fest, but I am unsure.

I'm really excited about this year.

Okay... looking at the library hours on the 'net, none of the libraries are open later than 5 on either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. If we want an evening Kick-Off Party, we're going to need to choose a weeknight. We can do a weekend party, if we want to shoot for early afternoon.

I won't be able to call tomorrow, as the libraries are closed for Columbus Day (which I didn't think about on previous posts, as it's not a holiday for my place of employ).

If we can reach some consensus on whether we want evening or weekend by Tuesday afternoon, then I'll call and schedule accordingly then.

Looks like Woods is open til 8 on Mondays through Thursdays (yay for late library hours). They've got something scheduled on Monday & Tuesday the 26-27, but Wednesday the 28th looks free - at least per the online calendar.
Are Wednesdays particularly bad for anyone? I'll toss out the evening of the 28th as a candidate - what do you guys think?

I just called the Woods Branch. Both the large and the small meeting rooms are in use the evening of the 28th. I was asking with a start time of 5:30.

The small room can accomodate 30, and the large room 75. Do we want to try for a different branch on the same night, or a different night at Woods?

There are a number of libraries with large meeting rooms to use, including the Dusenberry/River branch we met at last year.

http://www.library.pima.gov/services/meetingrooms/

I can call around and see if we can find one still available for that evening, or try a different evening at a particular branch.

There is Himmel Park Library that is not too far from the University. I've used their meeting room for my craft group. Martha Cooper Library is very nice, though it is a bit further down on Speedway and a little tricky to find.
