Anyway, yes, you all have the upper hand, but Google Translate gives me just enough to get an idea of what you're saying.
I wanted to answer a question, though. We're using average words per participant in the region as calculated by the NaNoWriMo site, so you will want to keep your wordcount updated. You can keep track of your regional average by clicking on the 'Regional Info' tab.
I will try to post updates for both sides every few days in November.

(Before you roll your eyes and say 'typical American" I have to defend myself and say I'm mostly fluent in French (I haven't used it as much as I should in the last 10+ years) and used to be able to get by in Spanish. I can also ask questions in German, but not understand the answers.)

I'll answer in English, just in case, eventhough you're Finnish is pretty good. :)
We could, unofficially, write our nanos with 30k, and some of us do so. Most of us (as I've understood, but I really can't be totally sure) are reaching for the 50k, which is (again, as I've understood) the only way to officially win NaNoWriMo. On the other hand, not all of us write their nanos in Finnish, some write it in English for the sake of fluency or to make their task a bit easier with prepositions and such.
I know you all are amazing English speakers, so I will torture you no longer.

I tend to write with combined words too much anyways, so for me nano's going to be somekind of practice with that. Propably I'll end up writing the long words even longer and reaching for my word count with thousands of unnecessary words. :D
I so totally know what you're talking about. Trusting Google's translator is like trusting Wikipedia: You usually get what you need, with a few errors BUT when you really need some reliable information all they offer is one sentence of something useful and lots of BS.
But, you're almost correct. It should be "käynnistäkää", 'cause we like to complicate our verbs. ;) And don't worry, only typical Finns can speak fluent Finnish, so it's actually quite a surprise when anyone outside our borders can understand anything that we say. (:

Hello Kerri and all others!
I have done NaNo twice now, first time in English (2007) and last year in Finnish. I won both times and last year I crossed the finishing line even a few days early, despite using Finnish with its not-so-NaNo-friendly-grammar.
For me it is about using the language I know best. Finnish is my mother tongue and most of the books I have ever read have been in Finnish. Despite the fact that nowadays I read huge amounts in English (especially professional books I need for my school) it still is only my third language. Languages and their usage are (for me) like tools for woodcarving, weaving or other crafts. I know how to use Finnish with my eyes closed and both hands tied behind my back. It is the tool that I have sharpened and honed into near perfection.
(Plus the story for this year will take place in Helsinki, and all/most of the characters will be "natives", so...)
Let the be-- uh, fastest side win!
(And yes, I´ll be aiming for 50 000 words and then some, like before. This year I even have something like a plot already done, so it should be a picnic. :) )
