I'm in Harrisonburg, not exactly a Duke, but I was an adjunct professor at JMU for about ten years and a visiting professor for one so I suppose that qualifies me. Are there going to be any events in Harrisonburg? I'd certainly like to attend.
Cheers,
Ray

Wow.. I feel really stupid now. XDD I didn't even figure in the rest of harrisonburg. I think that makes me a snobby college kid. xD Anywho, yes. I'd like to get something together. :D Maybe a weekly thing around harrisonburg. Knowing that others are out there going at it with you is always such a motivation booster. -nods-

So yes. Anyone else, JMU or Harrisonburg area, game?

Hi there! We actually have a faithful area coordinator for JMU/Harrisonburg. She goes by arrowsforpens. Meet up with her on the Countdown to Kickoff thread or send her a note through NaNoMail. She is starting to plan write-ins so make sure you speak with her about your available dates and times! I'll see you in Harrisonburg around mid month. Watch our region calendar for updates!

Have fun!

Yes, we H'burg cats should do something here if we can get enough people because I am working on Halloween(I get to dress up and scare people so I'm not one bit upset) and I won't get off till about 10:30pm or so. Def. won't feel like driving to Winchester... I say even if its a small group lets do it

I'm up for the Harrisonburg gig ... My wife and I usually go out for dinner, a long dinner, to avoid all the trick or treaters now that we've no kids of our own at home. Later would be great somewhere in Harrisonburg. If the crowd isn't too big they could come to my house. I live off Central Ave. a couple of blocks from the Sheetz on South Main.

Cheers,
Ray

Hey guys,
I'm putting together a Kickoff write-in at IHOP, headcounts are going up on the Countdown to Kickoff thread.

I was thinking we might also do something weekly--maybe at Barnes and Noble? Greenberrys? Someone's house? I dunno. Feel free to toss around ideas here, and I'd be happy to answer any questions. (Don't worry about planning stuff if I don't respond to anything until after Sunday... Physics Exam Cometh.)

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Like I said on the kick off thread, I don't think I'd be able to make it to an iHOP kickoff but I would love to do a weekly meeting. Maybe on Fridays? :D Or Sunday afternoons? Earth and Tea cafe downtown is a good place or maybe another little coffee shop? It would be fun to find out what other people are writing about, push ideas around for anyone who is stuck...

So yeah. XD

Never been to Earth and Tea, but I'm up for meeting weekly depending on how it fits my schedule. I think chatting and writing at the same time sounds like fun. I like the C.S. Lewis quote ... one of my favorites. You know there is a C.S. Lewis Society that meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble?

Other places might include the Barnes and Noble (depending on the number of people) it would be nice to have internet access. Then there is Paneras ... what other places might be good to meet?

I love Earth and Tea cafe! But I feel I ought to point out that it's a fairly small venue, and popular enough without a deluge of novelists that it might not quite fit our needs. Artful Dodger is fun, but dark, which tends to cause eyestrain. Personally, as far as downtown coffee shops go, I vote for Old Dominion. But I hear Greenberry's is also fantastic!

We could meet at the Little Grill or Daves Taverna.

Sorry But I'm Lillie. I don't live in Harrisonburg but I live really close so it would be easy for me and my sister(kkatelynn) to come.
Looking forward to the next meet up!

As much as I LOOOOOVE Dave's, the atmosphere isn't really conducive to writing (too loud and crowded, but I suppose some people work better that way ^_^) Even if we have non-Duke Hburg folk, perhaps TDU sometime? It's amazing when it's not crowded, and having a coffee shop right there would be nice.

Oh, btw, I'm Kat (didn't mean to barge in without introductions). I missed the kickoff because the Marching Royal Dukes were in Pennsylvania :P (got some good writing done on the five hour bus ride back, though ^_^)

writer-love to all,

~Kat

Hi Kat ... I'm a non-Duke, but I came to the IHOP kick-off ... there were 5 folks there, six if you count my wife who came but is a non-WriMo. Chris, Stewart, Maggie, and I forget the name of the other young lady, were all there. We broke up about 1:15 or so. I'm looking forward to some write-in's ... I think maybe Barnes and Noble would work if the crowd isn't too large and I don't know if Panera would be OK with it or not.

Cheers,
Ray

Hey everyone,

In case you're new, I'm Kate, the Point of Contact (POC) for Harrisonburg. It's like a mini-ML.

I think we were tossing around the idea of having a write-in every Friday, and the two best places I've seen are Barnes and Noble and TDU. Let me know what you think, what times are best for you, whether you need a map/help with the HDPT and their new schedules. (Actually, I won't be in town this first Friday. I'm going up to NoVA for my little brother's birthday, but I'm still here to help!)

And I have other exciting news! Our real ML, Susieiz, will be coming down on Saturday the 14th with a few writers from Up North (Winchester-ish). They should be here around noon for lunch and writing. Anybody interested in joining?

Write on!

I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'm another JMU student, name's Erin. I like the idea of Barnes and Nobles or TDU. Dunno really where the rest of these places are. Not really familiar with Harrisonburg yet. But, I think somebody needs to beat me over the head with a news paper or something, cause I'm about as distracted as they come. I haven't broken a thousand words yet. XP

Hi Kate ... I'm Ray, Bridgewater College professor in Math and CS and I'm doing WriMo for the first time, but I've known about it for a few years and got a friend of mine to participate last year and he finished so I'm sort of committed to doing it this year. I'm going great guns and I'm on track but my characters are writing the story so far, I'm not ... that may mean I'm out of control.

I do "hard" science fiction -- where the science has to make at least marginal sense. My story is about man's expansion into space as a real endeavor, a new frontier to the moon and beyond, and the struggles that entails. It takes place on the moon, earth, L5 (the first space habitat) and Skytel, an orbiting resort in relatively near earth orbit. The story is about the scientists are are trying to make space a habitat friendly to man.

I think meeting at B&N or Panera maybe or ... hmmm... some other place in Harrisonburg that doesn't mind us ... would be a great idea. What is the TDU? I've been an adjunct professor at JMU in the past (rather distant past now, pre-2001) and I'm not up on the acronyms.

Cheers, Ray

Hey all!

I'm Katelynn, a student at Bridgewater College doing Nanowrimo for the first time. I'm definitely interested in doing a H'burg write-in. I know the area pretty well. I wasn't able to attend the writing kick-off, but I'd love to meet some fellow nanos in the area! =)

I think that Panera would be a great place to do one, also. But Barnes and Noble and Old Dominion Coffee in downtown are great places.

TDU is taylor down under. It's a hangout area for students.

But TDU does late night stuff almost everynight and usually packed during the day. So I thing B&N or Panera would be our best bet.

Any takers for this friday? Maybe? -isn't in charge but would like to plan something soonish- XDD Yes I am pain. Nice to meet you all. ;]

So all we need to do is decide when and where ...
Who's going to be making that decision here in the Harrisonburg area?

I don't have the NaNoWriMo pecking order really understood so someone has to tell me.

Okay cats, let's get this thing scheduled.

Hey Ray, we met at the write-in. I was the one wearing the corpse-ish theater makeup. How's the space jockey getting on with the scientist's daughter?

To Kat, Erin, and Katelynn, welcome!

I think we've got enough people outside JMU that it's better to do write-ins at the Barnes and Noble--which is across the (free) parking lot from the Panera if we decide we want that more, and has a bus stop. I hear that both have free wi-fi.

Friday is the day I keep hearing, so let's go with that. I don't have classes the whole day, so it's all the same to me, but maybe in the afternoon? Say, 3? Unfortunately I won't be in town this weekend, but if you guys like the time, we can make it a standing thing and I'll be there next week.

Peace,
Kate

I work every Friday till about 6, I liked meeting people at the kick-off and desperately need a kick to help with this pitiful 817 word count sadness... Anyone opposed to a gathering that late?

I'm OK with a gathering at around six on Friday at Barnes and Noble ... for an hour or two. Anyone else up for it.
This is the B&N in Harrisonburg ... this Friday ...
I've been doing pretty good on word count only fell off the wagon last night due to all the election hoopla, hope to get back on today ... but I have to write about 2700 words to catch up. Once you're behind it's the devil to pay.

I'm game for Friday evening, but the Marching Band doesn't get out of practice until 6:30, so if you guys are going for 6-ish, my boy and I will be a little late getting there. Also, since I have no clue what anyone's face looks like yet >.>' how are we going to find one another in B&N? Anyone have an idea for a specific place to meet, awkward hand gesture of greeting, password, anything?

Well, we seem to have a fundamental conflict. Some people can't come in the afternoon and the others can't come in the evening, and I want everyone to have a chance to come.
I'm going to give you all two options:

A) Just for you guys, I will host TWO write-ins back-to-back on Fridays. (Except I won't be there this week because of the out-of-town thing). Those would be at, say, 4 and 7.

B) We switch the whole shindig to Saturdays. If I'm not mistaken, that will conflict with Marching Band too, right? If we go for Saturdays, I'm thinking closer to noon.

Remember that 12:00 on the 14th is our extra-special write-in with the Winchester wrimos.

Well I'm planning to be at B&N on Friday probably for a while in the 1'ish time frame before going to a movie with a friend of mine who is a Waynesboro WriMo and then I'll be back at B&N trying to catch up at 6 p.m. for an hour or so.

I'm a little behind the pace right now, but I'm going to have about a six hour stint now at Radford on Saturday while our ACM Programming Teams are trying to program their way to glory. While they are doing that I'm going to spend those six hours writing like mad.

Cheers, Ray
P.S. Say Kate ... sorry I didn't remember you name I had Chris, Stewart, and Maggie, but I'd forgotten your name ... I did remember the make up though ... I was wondering what that was about, although after all it was Halloween.

Saturday would conflict with marching band, but if it's around lunch time I could come and go if I needed to. Fridays at seven would be excellent for the week thing, but would back-to-back be an inconvenience?

Well my friend Owen and I hung out at Barnes and Noble for about an hour and a half tonight from 5:30 to a bit after 7:00 but no more WriMo's showed up so we both worked away. I got my numbers for yesterday done anyway. Still have not got today's numbers, but "Oh Well" ... I'm also trying to figure out how to get a little more pizazz in my plotting.

It's a science fiction work so that mostly I've been sketching background and introducing characters and motivations. No real villains yet just folks trying to accomplish things and struggling a bit. I think I need a major failure or maybe I should kill someone after getting everyone to really like them.

You get rather bloodthirsty after a while.

Cheers, Ray
