The Plot-In went so well, I thought it would be nice to do a character-in. Minor characters welcome.

Among other things, we will try to find:

1. Something unique (or at least a little unusual) the character does, on a routine basis, that says something about them. It could be something as small as having the exact same lunch every day, sounding like they're asking a question when they're making a statement, etc. This type of thing doesn't even have to make it into the story, but if the author knows it, it should help the characters feel more complete from the start.

2. A choice they can make early in the novel that is completely from their point of view but might not be to anyone else. Note: useful for supporting characters and villains too!

3. Some idea of how they speak and how it differs from everyone else. Are they formal? Informal? Personal? Distant? Do they make odd? Short attention span? Meticulously focused? How could we structure their dialogue so that it is distinctive enough that even if we don't indicate who is speaking, the audience could still pick it up.

4. A name that feels comfortable and natural for that character.

I think it would help to go into the novel with each of those things for THREE characters. That would give you enough to work with in almost any genre (a hero, a sidekick and a villain in a fantasy, a scientist, her rival and her best friend/conscience in a sci-fi, the romantic heroine, the handsome and rich, but ultimately scummy villain who is after her heart, and the even more handsome, roguish but ultimately good and decent man who will eventually win it in a romance, the detective, the corpse and the killer in a mystery, etc.).

I realize there is a lot going on that weekend, but I figure *I* have to do the above stuff anyway, and the plot-in worked out so well, maybe other people will be willing to give up a Friday night for it.

Please do indicate if you're interested in attending.

I'm going to head there either way (no excuse not to not have fully planned this year!) but if anyone else intends to go, let me know. I'll know who to look for, whether to bring signs, where to sit, and whether I need a shirt that can be seen from space.

(Note: the shirt is unlikely, but I *may* have a tie like that).

I plan on being there around 4pm (yes, three hours early) so I can work on what the heck I'm going to actually write about. I'll put a sign on the table for anyone who wants to show up early.

The good Lord willing, etc., I plan to be there. I'll look around for likely suspects (and maybe a discreet NaNo sticker on a computer).

I'll be there too, probably after I get off work, which means an hour early, but what else am I going to do? I can definitely wear my visible from space ML shirt. If you can't see that shirt from space, you really need to get your eyes checked. I can imagine the looks on my co-workers faces when I walk out of work wearing that shirt...

I think between the sign, the very visible shirt, and the possible visible from space tie, I think we'll be covered.

I'll try to be there. It depends on transportation--I just got in an accident and am awaiting the rental car. The Living Room was cool last year, wingedcreature, are we going to do it again this year?

There are two of us here already, towards the back of the Room. There are signs on both tables and it should be easy to find us.

If you're up for it sure. Mornings won't really work for me this year, but late afternoons/early evenings are good for me. What's a good time for you?

Attendees today:

Mike (alchemi), Steve (JsterSD), Leo (Deloas), Phil (PhilB), Yolanda (Addiction-Darkness), Whitney (GabrielleLaRue), Chris (Dirmiome), Nicole (Wingedcreature) and Nell (cfox).

This was a very literate group and included a few younger-folk trying for their first time. We had a lot of agreement but someone (Whitney?) came out against ninjas.

It was a lot of fun. Good luck everyone.
