We've mostly introduced ourselves to each other, so why don't we introduce the stories we'll be crazily committing ourselves for the next month to? Or if you don't have a story in mind yet, what various ideas do you have floating about? And what inspired you to stumble across these specific ideas or specific story? :) I'd love to hear all about your upcoming NaNos!

Okay. I'm game.
My novel is titled "Mirrored Memoirs" and centers around Kasey Denison, an mystery/romance author who's first book shot to #2 on the NY Bestsellers List and stayed there for seven weeks. Now she's trying to follow up with her second novel with the prodding of her editor, Maxine. The story actually moves back and forth between what's happening in Kasey's life and in the life of the heroine of her second book, acclaimed author Miranda McKenna. The reader will get to see how Kasey's "real" life is superimposed into her novel and how, in some frightening ways, parts of her novel crossover into the "real" world.
In regard to how I came up with this idea, I was set on writing a story I've had in my head ever since finishing NaNoWriMo in 2007. Then I was listening to talk radio two weeks ago and they were interviewing a stage actor who was talking about how he seemed to be cursed, health-wise, whenever he tried to participate in a certain play. This story idea hit me just as he finished that anecdote, and I never looked back.

(Great idea, Cara!)
I'm Cheri's novel. I'm a young adult fantasy named Anisoptera. Anisoptera (a scientific classification for dragonflies) is a continent on the planet Xanthia with a bunch of inhabitants that look like eerily beautiful, yet terrifying purple iridescent 7-foot tall dragonfly people. (The other 2 continents have butterfly people and mysterious firefly people who can see into the future--but their books won't be written until next year.)
The peoples of Xanthia are rescuing Earth children from abusive & neglectful situations, so the HATE can't spread, thus averting a destructive world war on Earth which would in turn destroy the universe.

Wow, those both sound really fascinating! :) It's funny, too, because the friend I brought to the meeting is named Kasey, and I read her the descriptions here, and she thought it was really cool that a character had her (rarely spelled) name. I can't wait to see you guys get started on these. I'd love to eventually read some excerpts from these if you'd allow me the honor.

Those are great beginnings!
My novel is about an agoraphobic who is trying to get past her illness and move on with her life.
----------Liv is the main character, she was in an accident from which she coped by retreating into her safe zone, which for her was her home.
The book chronicals her struggle to regain her former self, and find a job along the way! I can't tell you too much more about it because I'm still figuring it all out!
I made a banner, but i'm not sure if i know how to get it to post like other people have. I'll give it a try - if it does not appear, any help would be welcome. Also, i love to mess with the image, so i will probably change it 50 times!
Thanks all,
Katherine

Ok, let's see if I can sum this up succinctly.
Randall Parks is a thief in the Old West. He and his partner David plan on robbing the Atlas Ranch, owned by Old Doc Warner and his daughter Jake (best shot with a rifle since Annie Oakley). What Randall doesn't count on is that Doc Warner and Jake just rescued a scientist named Roger from the Sir Ockah Gang (biggest group of cutthroats that'll drygulch ya in a hearbeat for a dollar). Roger is wearing his latest invention, a clockwork body suit that can fly, shoot bullets faster than a gatling gun, make you strong, invulnerable to everything up to a dozen sticks of dynamite, and run faster than a horse. The problem is the Sir Ocka gang managed to wound Roger before he could get completely rescued, and Old Doc Warner ain't gonna let him go without learning all the secrets of this clockwork assault suit.
Randall and David break into the Atlas Ranch that night and rescue Roger.
And his suit.
And the Sir Ocka gang isn't finished looking for that suit either.
I'm trying to adapt an earlier story I wrote into steampunk. I love the genre and hope I can do it justice. For those of you who don't know what steampunk is, it's kind of like Victorian age sci-fi (like Jules Verne and H. G. Wells) where there is space travel, aliens and the like, but everything runs off steam power and clockworks rather than electricity and nuclear power.

Banner's, I aint got no stinkin banner.
Okay, that out of the way....
I'm not sure which genre my novel would classify in, but I'm leaning toward young adult. The title is Crazy Cat Lady.
It is based in a small rural community. It tells the tale of a young (10-11) year old girl who inadvertantly runs into the crazy cat lady that lives down a long lane past the outskirts of town. The 60 something widowed Sophia Parker sees something in the young girl and takes her under her wing.
It will be (I Hope) a journey of discovery on Emma Boyd's (the girl) part. I plan on working in some extra sensory stuff, talking to animals, simple living. Etc. etc.
I'm a newby, so be gentle!

Wow, I'm having so much fun reading all of these! They're making me so excited about NaNo. Who would think dinky little Peoria county would have such talent? ;) I hope you'll allow me to read snippets as you write. It's terrible to read these ideas and cliffhangers and synopsises (synopsisies? synopsii?) and not be able to read the actual story that it's describing! Good luck to all of you wonderful, creative people! I look forward to November. Happy NaNoing!!
Edit: I totally -LOVE- that there is a girl named Jake. Best name ever.

My novel thingy:
Eritta Domian knows she born to a line full of magic. She even knows how to tap into it, though casting a spell in the middle of high school wouldn't go over well. Enter coincidence bordering on fate, and attraction far too familiar and deep to be passing.
Amongst passion and experiment, the Titans Heimdall and Fenrir are awoken, and though Eritta knows she has some place in the fight that erupts, no one seems able to define what it is. Still - with her visionary aunt knowing that she has a place in these events, and the support of a man who once was accused of stalking her, she thinks that maybe this won't be so bad.
And then she finds out she's pregnant with a savior and the chances of surviving the birth are slim to none. So much for that.
I'm excited and a little nervous for this thing, partly because I'm not sure of it's genre. It kind of wants to be an action adventure novel, it kind of wants to be fantasy, it kind of wants to be erotic romance. The book itself is a fairly important link in a series involving several interconnected realities; Eritta is somewhat of a side character in those universes, here she's the main character. So yeah. *facepalm*

Just like a boy named Sue.
My idea comes from the realm of Middle Age fantasy. And with it, I have done much world creation and name generating.
7 Numens (or Gods) have combined ther powers to create the world, nature and life, and one or two get on a power trip. The others prevent them from trippin', strip them of their powers, and make them mortal. The powers, however, are never really gone. They are transformed into objects and hidden in the world in an effort to keep these new mortals away from obtaining them again. Along the way, some life on (Earth) have stumbled upon some of these objects, whether meaning to or not, and are in the process of using/abusing them as best they can. One of the 'mortal Numens' stays undiscoved, keeping tabs on everything, waiting for his chance to rise again with his, and the others', power.
Why 7? Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Life, Death and Magic. They create by themselves or in combination with another all the planets' landscape and life. It's only after creation that a couple want to rule it as their own.
This idea, or forms of it, have been swimming in my head for many years. The creation and naming of things is fun. The writing and much of the storyline.....have yet to begin.

I've widdled down to three, but I can't decide what i'm starting on tonight. What do you guys think?
Premise #1 -
Story about the unlikely confluence of events that create actual magical items. How maker, material, timing, intent, location
-sometimes even luck- can alter something from extraordinary to banal. Thinking a linked series of stories tied by either a group that collects/monitors/studies such things, or a ratty ol’’ antiques-curio shop that sold the items or catches wind of them & tries procuring them. Bits on how each holder came into possession & whether they know what they have or it works for them, etc.
-I don't remember where the idea came from, I was just checking my writing notebook & found it scribbled into the back. *shrug*
Premise #2 -
There’s an old, long forgotten truth to the universe that states that thought, being a creature of energy & will, can create wonders. Specifically that every story every thought up, ever told, put onto clay tablet or committed to the page, any tale ever brought forth created its own universe. And, within each of these universes was a whole ‘nother world, a living, breathing version of the story…both what’s been told & the stories beyond the page.
When a little girl in the ‘real’ world starts noticing changes in her favorite storybook, no one believes her initially, but what they don’t realize is, some of the chars (who don’t know they’re -just- chars) aren’t happy with their lot in life…so try changing it.
The little girl, with help from a few Paper Folk, has to try to fix things before the whole world is destroyed & her favorite story disappears for good.
- Just sort of an idea I'd been kicking around for a bit really. People naturally are creatures of enery & depending on your school of thought, there are some that think the will can direct that. Plus, there's bits around the edges of any story that we never see; everything that leasd up to the page & goes on beyond, right?
Premise #3 -
A small boy living a mundane life gets some far from mundane new neighbors living next door. A collection of mythic creatures, magically disguised, come to town taking up residence…and looking for him. They’re frequently moving between hiding places as they run from an ancient sect that hunts their kind & their allies. The neighbors, a sphinx, a giant & a mermaid, are looking for a child, but they’re a bit fuzzy on which child at first, knowing only the approx. area they’ll be in & that they’re either the legendary savior of these creatures or as a warning/protection/recruiting detail for their own kind. The neighbors have to find the right child (it’s merely dumb luck that they ended up -right- next door) for whichever mission before they’re wiped out by their adversaries. The kid needs to meet & slowly build up a trust with the neighbors, learning whatever training he’ll need from them, before he can come to terms with his destiny & decide what to do.
-Lol, this...this began from true events. I had the -WORST- neighbors; noisy, messy, rude...just awful. The police had been about half a dozen times, the fire dept. twice....awful. they moved out last year & I thought we (the neighborhood) were finally through with them...until about a week later. My, usually dry, basement had about 4 inches of water standing in it. After a bit of nosing around, I realized it was cuz the spot under the kitchen window of the now vacant neighbor's house was POURING from thespot where the siding met the foundation & it'd fooded the groud between the houses so bad it was coming up into mine. Not having an owner to spin on, the cops got called & it was discovered that their basment was FLOODED, lie chest high flooded. When I saw it, I had this weird thought that, under different circumstance (for starters, a clean basement, lol, and not having to worry about ruined mechanicals & whatnot, just the basic notion of swimming in a basment could be kinda fun. Then I wondered 'who'd flood their basement to swim?' & the answer that popped up was 'duh, a family with a mermaid!'

Okay...I have been "trying" to write a synopsis of this thing, so this is just a rough draft that I have been fiddling with. It is a short synopsis, so obviously doesn't cover everything, but I am trying to make it as engaging as possible. So here goes...
She keeps it secret as best she can, but Jonathan though sweet and trusting, is not stupid. He begins to suspect that something is wrong but is unable to confront her. He wonders if she's dissapeared, and mourns the loss even as he holds her in his arms every night. Jenna wants to reconnect, but she feels outside of herself, unable to see her husband for what he is. Her lifeline.
The death of her mother, throwing off the invisibility shroud of 40 extraneous pounds, and the more secret shame of being sexually abused as a child, all coalesce into a struggle for identity, survival, and the courage to stitch together the remnants of her family.
It's still veeerry rough, but I think it will do for now.

Okay, I'm pretty new to this, so I'll try not to embarrass myself...
My novel has yet to tell me it's title, but basically it's about a peasant boy, Wigger, from the land of Prosperity who finds he has magical abilities- one problem, common folk aren't allowed to use or learn magic. In his attempt to persuade the Head Mage of his worthiness to study the noble craft he travels to the Great Center City in Prosperity to argue his position. The Head Mage (Who has yet to tell me his name too) finds Wigger's efforts laughable and on a whim tells him that if he can find the legendary Mage Blade he will have proven his worth and ability to be a student at the Mage College.
So Wigger sets off on his journey, determined to become a Mage and make changes in the world he sees around him. On the way he picks up a few friends, Jinx,- the girl with abnormally green hair and violet eyes who's sarcastic tongue bites like a dagger's edge and constant bad luck prove to be more than trying- Switch,- the somber golem boy made of solid white marble- and Yuuka- a girl with monkey feet and tail who whispers to trees.
Together the four find the Mage Blade, and stumble upon something darker that could change their ways of life drastically.
That's about all I have so far.... I hope to have some more idea haunt after I grab some coffee or some sort of caffeine substitute!
Bex

Hello,
On my third time as a NaNo-ette, I am writing Satire & Comedy. My characters are chatting nicely and we got off to a more than 8,000 word start. Good thing, because I have a lot of writing-for-cash to do this week and needed the jumpstart.
Here's something cool: I just discovered my cousin from Michigan is NaNo-ing this year! I have a new Buddy!
