Just a little over 75 hours left to go before kickoff and I wondered where all of you 'non pants' writers are in your planning. I've decided to take myself out for dinner each night this week because I seem to do the best planning when I'm out of the house. So far it's worked well and tonight I finished outlining chapter 22. Then I skipped to the final chapter (# unknown) and wrote out most of how I wanted it to unfold since I was figuratively hit by a lightning bolt while finishing my entree. I hope you are all doing well with your planning, and you 'pants' people...I hope you've been flexing your fingers in preparation!

Now on to my question. I know there's a thread in the general 'nano' forum but I was hoping there might be someone local who could help me out. My novel is set in NYC and I've only been there once...about 22 years ago...and I was just driving through (lost). I could really use some help with locations, financial aspects, demographics, etc. If any of you know about NYC then I'd love to pick your brain sometime over the next few days. :)

Thanks and *gets out pom pons* Rah rah rah! Sis boom bah! Goooooooooooooooooooooooo NaNo!!!!!

Gina,
I'm a pantser for sure.
I have a pretty good idea where the first and second chapter are coming from. In the first we meet Emma Boyd up a tree. Using LOTS AND LOTS of ajectives (pad the word count) I plan on introducing her (backstory?) and explain how she got up there. Ending the first chapter she opens her eyes to stare directly into Sophia "Pia" Parker's eyes. The reader will learn about "Pia" her nick name, her reaction to and thoughts about Emma.
In the end, they all live happily ever after. Now how many words do I still need????

OH, and I got my new glasses tonight so I'll be able to see what I'm typing.

Being a pantser, and knowing if I tried to plan my book out chapter by chapter...that it would all completely change the second I start to write...I just have the world building stuff that I've outlined at all, and a general direction of how the book should be laid out. I did a great deal of world building in advance though...complete with rudimentary maps and everything! Even little sketches of the wildlife on Planet Xanthia. That's WAY more planning than I usually do!

As for NYC-not a clue. Sorry...never been there!

Good luck with your endeavors--whether planning or pantsing!

Haha, I am not certain if I'm considered a pantser or a planner. I like to think I'm somewhere stuck in between, in some Writers' Purgatory of sorts.

I kind of have some erratic, horrible planning. And at the same time I'm winging it all. The planning I DO have is always done in the car as I'm driving to or from work or school. I don't know why, but something about cruising along with the radio cranked to a good song really just gets me thinking and sorting out the ideas in my mind.

Sitting at home and listening to music also helps, though there's just something special about the act of driving that really makes me able to plan and organize things out. Small, repetitive tasks do it for me too, such as showering or brushing my teeth.

Well... I have a plan, and am developing it. But I can already envision all the problems of the novel.... in that I can see the Crap that it can be, and instead I should be seeing to opposite.

Using Scrivener for Mac (its mac only).... they have a special Nano trial that doesn't expire until Dec 7, even then you can buy it for a discount and if you WIN nano you get 50% off the $39.95

So far the plan is looking good.

BUT NOW I need to get to it rather than typing on here.

Jeff
