I just got a couple group notices from the Second Life group "NaNoWriMo SL", subject header "Kick-off Party!"
First off, y'all all know what Second Life is? OK. It's a virtual world. Think of a chat room / instant messaging, only with scenery and widgets and buildings and stuff. For more info: www.SecondLife.com & https://join.secondlife.com/ . Basic accounts, which is all you really need, are free.
Now, once you're in Second Life, you can subscribe to different groups that share your interests. For those of a writerly persuasion (aren't we all?) I recommend the following:
Writers Guild
NaNoWriMo SL
Just use the Search interface, choose the Groups tab, search for those names (one name at a time) and then pull up the group info and click the "Join Group" button. Once you join those groups, you will get notifications of events, like poetry workshops and parties and open mic readings and even write-ins where you can sit your avatar down at picnic tables and animate it to look like its typing or writing or reading a book. It's really cool.
OK! So there's a kick-off party in Second Life for NaNoWriMo! Here's the details:
Where: Rusalka Callisto's Private Yacht
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Capel/100/120/21
When: 11:00 p.m. PST
Hang out aboard a private yacht for a west coast NaNoWriMo Halloween kick-off party. Come dressed in costume for a chance at a $500L price awarded at 11:45 p.m. Or just come as you are and hang out on our dance floor, in our oceanside pool, our lounge areas or wherever! Music and horror TV piped in, which you can shut off with a click. Halloween-themed snacks & drinks and NaNoWriMo party games such as "Pick a Word" and "Random Plot Point".
(Do note that the prize is in in-game currency, not US dollars. There is a currency exchange, but it takes about L$260 to equal one US dollar.)
You can click the "slurl" above and it'll take you to a web page that'll automatically launch the Second Life viewer (if you have it installed) and, once you log in (if you have a login) it'll transport you to the location. I'm standing there now, but as the party hasn't started yet, the yacht is not yet at the dock. Remember that SLT (Second Life Time) is equivalent to Pacific Time, so the party will start right at midnight for us.
I'll post more about Second Life stuff as we go, maybe upload a screenshot of the Milk Wood Writers' Meet (the picnic tables with writing animations area).

I'm hoping to find and attend something writerly-oriented in SL this November. It's got to be half a ton better than what I normally spend my time doing.

I know what you mean--I spend far too much time in front of Freeplay games in casinos. Also visiting PPRS posters.
I'll post a new thread later on tonight about other SL resources for NaNoWriMo and writers in general. To include the SL locale I hung out in while at the midnight kick-off. While I was writing with Boulder Wrimos in "1st Life," I was also writing with a Colorado Springs Wrimo at the NaNoWriMo Shrine And Lounge in SL. Now I have a shiny word-count widget that hovers over my head!

A writer's widget would be neat, but would probably kick off my RP titler. *rolls eyes* I'll figure out what to do, even though I've yet to actually even visit SL since November started. Not a good thing for my work life and my friends. They probably think I'm dead.
It's actually weird to find a crossover of interests like SL and NaNo, to be honest. I kinda figured I was the weirdo and never even bothered to look up NaNo on SL. Ah well.
If you're on SL sometime that I am, I'll be sure to say hi, and hopefully remember to tell you where I'm from. XD
