I started my novel from the basis of almost an interview. No ways in which to describe the way in which things are said. Nothing.
Almost like an author and character Q&A.
I have a plot, characters, a few hard roads for this character.
I know his story, but I'm letting HIM tell it. No grammar. No quotations, just him. Nice and raw.

How have you guys started?
Have you yet?

What's your formula?

wow writer. This is an excellent way to start your novel! Especially for someone like me who doesn't yet have a story, but i am working on it.

I love how you said "I know his story, but I'm letting HIM tell it. No grammar. No quotations, just him. Nice and raw." <-- that is brilliant, beautiful and exactly what NaNoWriMo is all about! Way to go RED HOT!!!

Oh yeah, Chris Baty should be quaking in his boots.

Way to go writer. WAY TO GO - and thanks for this idea. I think it will help me :)

OOrah and Insanely yours,

My formula is: "But in chair, hands on keyboard" or "BICHOK". That's really all I've got to go with. :)

I had my main character, who is immortal, wake up in a field with a bunch of pointy objects in his chest. He had apparently caused some trouble during last night's drinking, but doesn't remember anything. Time to head to a new town!
