I had a really tough time trying to think of exactly how I would proceed until I saw a forum post last week. The person wanted to write about 25 moments of import in a person's life. With 25 events, that amounts to 2,000 words per event. I found that an interesting way of looking at the novel writing process. Because I had vignette style things I wanted to include, and a general feeling I was going for, but no plot, I thought that maybe I would look into using that type of idea myself. I wrote down about 80 things I wanted to include in my story and will be using those to help guide my writing each day. with 80 items, I need to write about 700 words per topic on average. That puts it into a much easier format to follow through with. I plan on writing about one to three topics a day. Some of the things I want to include will be less than 100 words, the one topic I wrote about today somehow expanded itself to 1700 words.
(By the way, the math works out to an average of 1,667 words per day during the month to make it to 50,000 by month's end.)
Remember it's about quantity not quality. Just write - doesn't matter how well - the editing should come later.
Good Luck!
