I just popped into the Shoutouts forum to post an obligatory 7.5k shoutout when I spotted one somebody else had posted.
daylara, from arkansaw has finished at 72k words after writing for a solid 22 and a half hours.
I'm sorry, but I fail to believe that, it can be done. I pushed myself and got 5k written on day 1. Granted I had the most horrendous time falling asleep because I couldn't get my novel out of my head.
I guess some people don't have lives and families to contend with.
I thought part of Nanowrimo was the joy we all got from pushing people on each day of November. Of friendly competitions and personal goals.
Gah.... finishing in one 24 hour period just doesn't sit well with me.

It's true, some people don't have other interruptions, and it makes things easier... and harder. I'm always amazed at some of the massive totals people can post towards the end of the month - hey, even towards the middle of the month! Right now I'm a little depressed that I haven't even made it to 2k, let alone 72k :) But the children have been sick and throwing paddies for most of the afternoon, and I think I'm coming down with their cold - yay. I know that every day this week I have an appointment to go to, whether it's to visit my mum who's just out of hospital (nothing life-threatening), or to take T to the doctor, or to go to the post office to send some stuff off that has to go this week - life gets in the way, you know? Geez, last night I had to even spend quality time with M, watching a movie, because we'd both been busy and hadn't seen each other all day. What a waste of writing time! ;P
I guess for some people, to write the whole amount in a day might be a challenge in itself. I have too many people relying on me for me to do that - I just don't have a spare 22 hours to myself! I don't think that's a bad thing, either. Like you, I'd prefer to do it over the whole month, but I guess others might want (and have the means) to do things differently.
You're doing brilliantly :)

I have three children myself, so I know what the pressure of kids can put on you when it comes to finding time to yourself to squeeze out words. But they are young. Aged, 1, 2 and almost 4 respectively. So I write solidly from 8pm-12 midnight, after they are asleep, I snatch time in the morning when its just my oldest awake. The only reason I am so far ahead at the moment is I had a good stretch on November 1st, when all three of my kids were exhausted and slept four around 4 hours, and hubby was at work a good portion of the day. He works nights....
Thanks for the encouragement. Any words written is better than none. I failed myself last year, as family got in the way too much.

Finishing your novel in the first day... I don't quite know why, but it kind of takes the fun out of it. It's not really the point. Whereas writing 30k to catch up in the final days, that's totally Nanowrimo-cool :D
Ah, I'm just envious.
Off to catch a few Ks,
Amy

Meh, don't let that sort of thing get to you. Like bean said, maybe that was her challenge to herself.
I read NaNo for the New and Insane before I started, and one of the sections that stayed with me the most was the one about not worrying about others. The author said that it's likely that at some point during the month, those doing well will begin to cop flak from others not doing so well, like it's their fault for hogging all the words or some stupid notion.
There's a fine line between healthy competition (which is the spirit of NaNo) and unhealthy . . . I try to stay well clear of it :-) so I'm just ignoring daylara or whatever her name is, because her result affects me not at all. It's too pie-in-the-sky from where I am to inspire me, and she's evidently not going to be around for the rest of the month to cheer with me or participate in the friendly competition thing, so I'm just going to let that go. :-)

Actually to be honest the bit that annoyed me the most was the fact that she'd made her 72k words and was going to bugger off for the remainder of the month. *sigh*

This is why I don't have the shout-outs forum displayed. I'm perfectly content to ignore them. Makes NaNolife much easier. Plus, I can't be bothered with shout-outs. They waste valuable writing time. :P
Look. If someone wants to get their novel done in 22 hours, or ten days, or write 100k, or whatever else they've challenged themselves to do, well, that's fine by me. Not everyone writes at the same pace, nor is everyone interested in pushing themselves to that extent. I don't think it necessarily invalidates their achievements, either. If that's what they want to do, more power to them. *shrugs*
I don't know, I suppose I'm a little biased since I know someone who's copped flak for writing so much and having people not believing their totals when they've proved they can write that much. I think it's completely unnecessary behaviour and does more harm than good.
That said, this doesn't extend to cheaters, and anyone who decides to cheat just to pretend like they did awesomely doesn't deserve that same respect.

I like the shoutouts, strangely, I like knowing I'm another 1000 words ahead on my 50 000 word stretch.
And cheating ... that annoys the hell out of me. I have a blank document sitting open, where I word dump all my novelling research and re-write the bits I need and don't need into my novel. It cuts the original content down by a degree or so. But least I know it's not cheating.
Which reminds me, in the next "day" in my novel world I have to have my characters name their newly identified calendar. A Draconai named Falk kindly provided them with the calendar system by rote.
