Hi all. Anyone write with a Neo or Alpha Smart instead of laptop or desktop? If so, which one and do you like it? Also heard that one can download the Alpha Smart program (for a fee) but cannot find this anywhere and the company doesn't respond.
Thanks,
Dindy

I wrote most of mine on a Neo last year. I totally love my Neo. It's more of a tool, rather than my main device. If I'm going where there's no plug for an extended period of time, I normally take it with me. Otherwise I tend to use my netbook. AlphaSmart program? There are apps out there for the AS devices but the only one that comes to mind that's pay for is the docs to go for the Dana (which isn't really needed).

I use an alphasmart 3000 for school (I guess I could fro NaNoWriMo but that seems like a lot of work, and I have a netbook). There aren't any real programs for it, afaik. It's okay but I make a lot of typoes on it!

Thanks for all the info. What's a net book?

Netbooks are those tiny notebooks you see people with these days.

a small laptop, highly portable. I have a refurbished Dell 10 inch that works great that I got for $211.

I use my laptop at home and either my AlphaSmart 3000 or a pen & paper when I'm out, depending on where I am and the mood I'm in. I prefer carrying my AS3K to my laptop because it's much lighter, has longer battery life, and fewer distractions. Then when I get home, I either download (if I used my AS3K) or type in my day's writing.
I wrote the majority of last year's NaNo project on Randy (my AS3K), and absolutely loved it. So convenient!

Last Saturday I bought a brand new netbook for nanowrimo write-ins, it's a Toshiba NB-205. It has wifi and three USB ports (the big thing these netbooks are missing that larger laptops have is a CD drive). I'm not at all used to those cheesy laptop keyboards so I got a PS/2 to USB adapter and took my huge IBM Model M desktop-computer keyboard along - you can see how much bigger my keyboard is here:

The great news is even with the keyboard plugged in this thing goes for over eight hours on a battery charge! There are cheaper netbooks, but not with that much battery life. It's still not as much as the Alpha things, but it's a lot for a laptop of any size.. This model is $349 at most any computer store.
I just bought a smaller no-numeric-pad keyboard from Ebay, but it will still be bigger than the netbook. It's cute (scroll down to see pics):

Hi Dindy,
I bought a Neo the week before NaNoWriMo and I love it! I also have a laptop, but it is heavier to carry around and I have to worry about having access to electricity because the battery runs down so quickly; also, with my laptop I am too easily distracted by the internet! Highly recommended!
