Please read my excerpt as posted on my profile.
I'm not going to cushion it with any defenses or apologies... just give me your first impression.
I thought I was mainstream fiction, but I thought if I posted to this category, I'd get a smaller, more focused audience. If you read my summary, you could tell me if I'm being totally pretentious in considering updating my genre...
Cheers,

Just from the excerpt I'd classify it immediately as mainstream fiction.

I understand how you feel, because I too wasn't quite sure which category to put my novel under. The "literary" worth of novels is something which is debated all the time in the same way that people debate what makes art "good." I think if you have a theme/ idea that is the driving force of the novel, then for the purposes of NaNoWriMo, it could be considered literary.
I've not heard of "Mainstream Fiction" I've heard people use this term with music or fashion styles, but not fiction. I assume that by Mainstream Ficiton, it means easily accessible and with classic style. I could see, from your excerpt and synopsis, many people being able to relate to your character and the story and enjoying what they read. Sometimes, it seems, there is a negative connotation to the word "Mainstream," but I think writting a piece of work that the majority of people could understand and appreciate seems like a positive me...
So really it could go either way.
Though the best advice I've read on these forums in this regard is that you should just focus on writting the novel. The category can be whatever you want it to be. :)

I'd agree with siarabird, the excerpt struck me as fitting in Mainstream just fine.

I'd also like to say that I based my judgment entirely on your excerpt - I have almost no clue about your novel as a whole. In the end you're the one who makes the decision of into which category it fits. For example, if you read my excerpt, most people would probably classify it was mainstream too. But I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that my novel is literary fiction, which should be enough for anyone.
So go with what you feel, I was just giving the point of view you asked for, the point of view of someone whose only knowledge of your novel is from the excerpt.
