Sounds like you're getting a great start!
Each day you enter your cumulative word count - so it's the total tally you have towards the goal of 50,000.

but...at the top of the page, where my username is, it says that my OVERALL wordcount is only 632, when I know I've typed much more...

Each time you enter your word count, you need to be sure to enter your *total* word count... not just what you've done since your last update. Whatever you enter in your word count will overwrite whatever's in there before, so you have to make sure you put in the complete total. the same is true for the validator... you'll need to copy and paste the *entire* manuscript.
