For now, I'm calling my book a fantasy genre book. It's set on this planet, Earth, in Lexington, MA...but it's about vampires. Not Twilight vampires, though. Vampires like the ones you might learn about on places like www.drinkdeeplyanddream.com and www.sanguinarius.org

It was originally going to be geared to a YA audience, but it's now too mature for that. So, fantasy genre? Or just mainstream fiction?

Genre's are meaningless boxes until the work is written and you are looking to "sell" you manuscript to a publisher or agent. You are likely to get more useful advice about vampires from people in the Fantasy forum and some good "real world" advice in either mainstream forum or character & plot realism forum.

Do you give them abilities they don't claim to have? Then yes, it's fantasy. If you look at what they say they can do, and discount the people who are way out there (I'm 521 and I can control animal's minds and have real fangs that are retractable and I'm the high priest of my coven, ad infinitum), then I'd say fiction, but not fantasy. You might want to find a few groups, and ask if you might hear their thoughts on who and what they are, why they feel they need blood/energy, or if they don't why they consider themselves vampires/vampyres.

There are also a lot of other names they go by. They most common I know of is living vampire or strigoi vii (basically the previous one in Romanian, but having the connotation of being a spell-caster of sorts. Strigoi were considered undead, vampiric witches/wizards).

If you'd like to ask questions, feel free to pm me. I had been thinking of doing similar at one point.

Well, not exactly. I add a hierarchy that doesn't "exist" to them, and I enhance a couple things, but I keep generally to what they say. I guess I'll call it fantasy to be safe, since my imagination might decide to take it on a spinoff or something, haha.
