So at home I use Open Office and my word count is (I round down for now) 8500. I emailed my manuscript to work and opened it in Word and my word count dropepd by 2,000 words.

I have so far found that I am not the only person to experience this:

Seems like people are getting different word counts depending on what software they use:

Even discrepancies between Open Office, Word and the NaNo counter when it goes live

It could be worse - you could have just discovered that your entire story so far consists of typing "I am a fish" 6500+ times.

So much for passing my astronavigational exam.

There seems to be quite a lot of things around the net about this:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3403266

But if anyone wants the conclusion I got is that Open Office Writer counts are WAY OFF the NaNometer (NaNo Word Count when it goes live)!
Micro$oft Word counts are usually within a few hundred word of the NaNometer.
Micro$oft Works is pretty much spot on.

I'm not saying that is the way it is but that is what I have read in quite a bit of googling.

Ryan, have you been hacking into my computer? How did you know that's all I've been writing?

I haven't followed the links yet, but I wonder if this is what I'd referred to once before, about how some word counters count letters and divide by 5 (every 5 characters = 1 word). I remember our old word counter years ago being like that, and have always assumed they still were, until I checked into it this year...

If you want to check you can go to:
http://www.wordcounttool.com/

Copy and paste into that.

I am using Writer and lost 2,000 word in the difference! Yeah, I was erm...a little upset with that.

I use Q10 and last year it was within 200 words when I validated... it also has built in word war timers and daily counts etc so I love it for NaNo.

Between the Word Count tool in Writer and http://www.wordcounttool.com/ 135 words of my work apparently go to the land of Wind and Ghosts. Oddly enough I think this will only encourage me to overcompensate, so I should be covered. ;p
