so i've never written a blurb in my life. its taken me an hour to come up with one, but it doesn't sound very professional.

how long should these things be?
and are there any tips floating around for writing them?

I tried summarising the backstory of my characters and then the main plot twist without explicitly giving away the ending. good starting point? bad idea?

By "blurb" you mean the short summary that goes in your author profile, right? The one that you want to sound like a book jacket?

Here's what I use: http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/art/snowflake.php Do only Step One and then take out the sentence about the climax. Voila, insta-blurb (er, sort of).
